Extractions: Home delivery March 17, 2003 FREE PRESS NEWS SERVICES WASHINGTON Sergei Berezin had a goal and an assist in the first period, leading the Washington Capitals to a 2-1 victory over the Colorado Avalanche on Sunday. Sergei Gonchar scored the other goal for Washington, which moved within a point of Tampa Bay in the Southeast Division. The Capitals surrendered the division lead with Friday night's loss to the Kings. Joe Sakic scored for Colorado, which lost consecutive road games for the first time this season. The Avalanche remained four points behind Vancouver in the Northwest Division. Washington goalie Olaf Kolzig finished with 21 saves. Berezin has scored in his first two games with the Capitals since being acquired from Chicago at the trade deadline. They've been timely goals, too, with Washington's top scorer, Jaromir Jagr, missing his third straight game because of a wrist injury. The Capitals began the day aggressively, outshooting the Avalanche, 13-6, in the first period. They finally capitalized when Gonchar knocked in a puck that deflected off Berezin's stick into the slot. Berezin made it 2-0 when he tipped in a crossing pass from Robert Lang just less than five minutes later.

Extractions: Season overview: The Canadiens season was nothing short of inspirational. Last September, few gave the Habs any chance at making the playoffs, let alone getting as far as Game 6 of the second round. Despite the way the season ended-the Canadiens lost the last three games of the second round to fall to Carolina-the team gave the city of Montreal its first playoff hockey since 1998. That's more than fans could have expected last fall, especially after hearing the devastating news the captain Saku Koivu was suffering from cancer. Koivu returned in the season's final week and provided a spark to the offense, helping the Canadiens shock the top-seeded Boston Bruins in round one of the playoffs. Overall, it was a successful, inspirational season. "We went farther than most people expected us to, and this was a stepping stone for some of the younger players who didn't know what the playoffs are like," says 39-year-old center Doug Gilmour, a key in-season pickup. It's a stepping stone that shows the team is headed in the right direction.
Extractions: NHL (Editor's note: Curt has just returned from 5 days in Acapulco. Where he reports, "They don't have much on hockey there", but he sent in the below thought after reading about the games he missed) Hey Just KISS.... " I don't think a lot who's playing in the net. My job is to get open, get the puck and shoot the puck. If I have the puck, it's my headache. If I shoot it, it's his headache." The Buffalo-Toronto and Dallas-Colorado semi-finals is proving to be the close contest envisioned. All four teams have superstars and backup talent that can dimpsy and dangle, but its still a matter of simplicity. I read the quote above and thought how my old coach, Boom Boom Geoffrion , put it succinctly, "you dont shoot, you dont score". Boomer was big at getting the puck on net. He got his name from popularizing the now common "slap shot". His nick name was "Boom Boom" from the sound of the puck hitting the stick,"Boom", then the boards "Boom". His wife, Marlene, called him "Boom". If your wife calls you a name strangers have made up you know you have arrived. Thats why so many husbands are known as "stupid". Sergei may be from Russia, but his philosophy dove tales with Booms. "I dont care who you are, you dont shoot the puck, you dont score", Boomer always said. The statistic is very telling. The leagues top scorers consistently have the most shots on net. Europeans are more discriminating about shooting the puck as their style is more picture perfect. Here in the play-offs Berezin shows European or North American players you keep the game simple, "dont think, shoot". These games are very close. The thought process could slow down the ability to succeed.
