Extractions: winning goal. June 11, 2000. Jason began his Junior career in 1989/90 with Stayner in the Ontario Junior Hockey League, moving over Lindsay the next season. In 1991/92 he moved up to the Ontario Hockey League where he played for the Oshawa Generals. In his second year with the Generals, Arnie (a.k.a. Jason) put up some impressive numbers with 41 goals, 57 assists for a 98 point total in 56 games, an increase of 74 points from his modest 24 point rookie season with the Gens. As his point total increased so did his penalty minutes. For those of you unfamiliar with the game of hockey, the ability to score plus a good number of penalty minutes is a good thing. Putting points on the board and being a physical presence in a very physical game made him a coveted prospect in the 1993 NHL draft. Jason was drafted 7th overall by the Edmonton Oilers. As a rookie in the 93-94 season, he had 33 goals and 35 assists to place second among all rookie scorers and finishing second in Calder Cup voting for Rookie of the year. During that season, Jason broke the single-season Oilers rookie goal scoring record held previously by Jari Kurri and was named to the NHL all-rookie team. During his sophomore year his numbers dipped a bit due to an injury shortened season. The next two years Arnie rebounded nicely rivaling his great rookie season.

Extractions: Arnott wins Cup for friend Click here for more on this story Posted: Sunday June 11, 2000 04:17 AM AP DALLAS (AP) Jason Arnott and Patrik Elias didn't just combine to win the Stanley Cup for the New Jersey Devils. They did it also for their fallen linemate, Petr Sykora. Arnott took a pass from Elias and snapped a shot past Ed Belfour at 8:20 of the second overtime on Saturday night to give the Devils a 2-1 win over the Dallas Stars and their second Cup since 1995. Having the two combine for the game winner was so appropriate because Sykora wasn't there to see it. With 7:52 left in the first period, Sykora was crunched by Dallas defenseman Derian Hatcher after flipping a shot at Belfour, and he fell back to the ice on his back, his hands held out as if frozen. Trainers and doctors immediately came out to attend him as players from both teams watched with concern.

Jason Arnott. In the Stanley Cup final. With an 'A' on his sweater. No. No. No. It just can't be so. Rub your eyes all you want. It's so. And rub them again. He's the real deal. How about a four-point night against the defending Stanley Cup champs in the Cup opener. Larry Robinson put the 'A' on his sweater and told him to grow up. That's what happened here. "He became a man this year," said Robinson yesterday on the eve of the Stanley Cup final between the New Jersey Devils and the Dallas Stars. "Basically, Jason Arnott finally matured.
