Product Description
Mikhail Moiseyevich Botvinnik (August 17 [O.S. August 4] 1911 ? May 5, 1995) was a Soviet and Russian International Grandmaster and three-time World Chess Champion. Working as an electrical engineer at the same time, he was one of the very few famous chess players who achieved distinction in another career while playing top-class competitive chess. He also developed a chess-playing algorithm that tried to "think" like a top human player, but this approach has been superseded by a brute-force search strategy that exploits the rapid increase in the calculation speed of modern computers. Botvinnik was the first world-class player to develop within the Soviet Union (Alekhine was a top player before the Russian Revolution), putting him under political pressure but also giving him considerable influence within Soviet chess. From time to time he was accused of using that influence to his own advantage, but the evidence is unclear and some suggest he resisted attempts by Soviet officials to intimidate some of his rivals. ... 1-0 out of 5 stars Avoid.
The book is nothing more than articles that appear in Wikipedia.
From Wikipedia:
Alphascript Publishing sells free articles as expensive books
An Amazon.com book search on 9 June 2009 gives 1009 (6 August, gives 1,859) "books" from Alphascript Publishing.[nan 1] 1003 of the books are described as "by John McBrewster, Frederic P. Miller, and Agnes F. Vandome". They are called editors in the book listings. It seems the only content of the many books is free Wikipedia articles with no sign that these three people have contributed to them.
The articles are often poorly printed with features such as missing characters from foreign languages, and numerous images of arrows where Wikipedia had links. It appears much better to read the original articles for free at the Wikipedia website than paying a lot of money for what has been described as a scam or hoax. Advertising for the books at Amazon and elsewhere does not reveal the free source of all the content. It is only revealed inside the books which may satisfy the license requirements for republishing of Wikipedia articles.
As an example of the "care" given to the books, the book "History of Georgia (country)" is about the European country Georgia but has a cover image of Atlanta in the American state Georgia.[nan 2] The Wikipedia article History of Georgia (country) does not make such a comical blunder.
PrimeHunter has compiled a list of the 1009 titles identified in June.

Excerpt: Kasparov versus the World was a game of chess played in 1999 over the Internet. Conducting the white pieces, Garry Kasparov faced the rest of the world in consultation, with the World Team moves to be decided by plurality vote. Over 50,000 individuals from more than 75 countries participated in the game. The host and promoter of the match was the MSN Gaming Zone, with sponsorship from the bank First USA. After 62 moves played over four months Kasparov won the game. In his words: It is the greatest game in the history of chess. The sheer number of ideas, the complexity, and the contribution it has made to chess make it the most important game ever played. Prior to the game, Kasparov was considered a prohibitive favorite. He was reigning World Champion, he was playing with the advantage of the white pieces, and previous examples of majority Internet voting had produced mediocre competition. For example, in 1996 Anatoly Karpov had taken the black pieces against the rest of the world, and had won convincingly. Contrary to expectations, however, Kasparov's game produced a mixture of deep tactical and strategic ideas, and although Kasparov won, he admitted that he had never expended as much effort on any other game in his life. The World Team had several points in their favour, some of which were innovative for an Internet game. F...More: http://booksllc.net/?id=707097 ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars From 1300 to 1500, from 5th to 1st board
As a high school sophomore I went to my second chess tournament in Syracuse, NY. I had a 1350 rating. On the way up in the school bus, our coach handed out books to everyone. My book was "Winning Chess." I read that thing cover to cover on the way up and was a terror in my section. I even took 1st U1800 in the NY Speed Chess Championship, beating a few class A players along the way. Back at school, I went from 5th board to 1st board.

I'm a bit stronger now and read more advanced tactics books, but I haven't come across one as good as this. I still recommend it to friends who are taking up chess. It's gentle and doesn't leave the reader in the dust. Each problem is broken down into two parts with lots of explanations. After a few puzzles it just clicks and you'll be solving the puzzles from the first position without reading the text.

5-0 out of 5 stars Simply Excellent
From the back cover:

"You are an average chess player. You are familiar with the major openings. You have played over some of the famous grandmaster tournament games. You have read a few books on the strategy and theory of chess. YET YOUR GAME DOES NOT IMPROVE. WHY? How many times, having played the opening according to the 'book' and having attained a satisfactory position, do you ask yourself, 'what do I do now?' WINNING CHESS answers that question. The proper use of combination play is the secret of winning chess. WINNING CHESS not only tells you, but graphically and forcefully shows you, how to recognize the elements of actual game positions. It teaches you how to look for the distinguishing characteristics and repetitive patterns that announce the presence of a potential combination. It shows you how to exploit these patterns to achieve such winning tactics as The Pin, The Knight Fork, The Double Attack, The Discovered Check, The Skewer and a dozen others. Each tactical theme is explained, demonstrated, analyzed and illustrated from the simplest form to the more complex situations that arise in master games. Each chapter constitutes a unique lesson in attacking play, and each can be applied directly to your own game. If you learn these lessons well, you will be well on the road to playing winning chess."

This book is for anyone who plays chess. Lower rated will learn more, higher rated will enrich their tactics foundation.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Best
When this senior citizen was young, I found Winning Chess by Chernev in our local library.I read the book, returned it, took it out, returned it, etc.It happened so often that I knew the library code by heart:794.1. I eventually played competitively, but it really began with this book.

When my son began learning chess, I gave him a copy of this book.He later played competitively at a higher level than me.

Now a grandchild is learning the game and I can't find a copy to give her. It's not just the teaching of basic chess skills, it's the enjoyable way it teaches by positive reinforcement. When you complete the book, you want to test your newly found skills on someone else.

Hopefully some publisher will reissue this book for a future generation.

5-0 out of 5 stars Yep - best chess book I've ever read
I agree with what seems to be the unanimous opinion: this is the best and most useful chess book I've ever read, and the one that did more to improve me game than any other book.

So, if it unanimously loved that much by the chess-playing community, why is it out of print?

5-0 out of 5 stars Winning Chess
This is a classic. So much so that I wanted to find a copy based on a discussion of how useful it was in the earliest days learning chesss skills. Recommended if you can find it; cherish it if you have a copy. ... Read more
