Extractions: European champion Bartlomiej Macieja (Poland) took the lead in the Curaçao 1962- 2002 chess tournament. Macieja. The grandmasters Macieja and Timman (Netherlands) and International Master Sequera (Venezuela) were the only players left with a 100% score at the beginning of round 3. Macieja played the black pieces against Sequera and surprised his opponent in the opening. This gave Macieja the better position, but Sequera defended himself precisely. Both players came into time trouble. In that situation Macieja took his chance to win a pawn and this advantage was sufficient for Macieja to win the game after 5 hours. The game of the day was certainly Timman against Korchnoi. Korchnoi defended himself with the French defense. Just after the opening Korchnoi overlooked the consequences of an exchange of pieces and lost one pawn. Timman had good chances to win the game and went finally in an endgame with Knight + 3 pawns against Bishop + 2 pawns. Korchnoi defended precisely and managed to stay alive (1/2-1/2). In the game analysis Timman indicated that he exchanged the rooks probably too early.
Round 3: November 20 2002 is from 1979, when Ligterink became the national champion (see picture gallery onwww.curacao.com/chess). 7, belakovskaia, anjelina, USA, Popitz, Andreas, GER, 10. http://www.txxxt.com/bul02r03.htm
Extractions: Sofia Polgar versus Victor Korchnoi WILLEMSTAD November 20, 2002 Today, in round 3, Viktor Korchnoi had to face the second Women Grandmaster on a row. Sofia Polgar played with the white pieces and played a solid game and came never in serious problems. Both players decided for a draw when the game came into a completely equal rook ending. IM Gert Ligterink (Netherlands) had to face grandmaster Jan Timman. Ligterink only victory on Timman is from 1979, when Ligterink became the national champion (see picture gallery on www.curacao.com/chess). Also this time Ligterink did not find a way to bring Timman in serious problems. Timman could bring his black pieces to the best squares and succeeded with a winning attack. Columbian grandmaster Alonso Zapata lost yesterday a half of a point and did not want to have more damage today. He had the black pieces against IM Jose Sequera (Venezuela). Sequera had no serious ambitious for winning the game. He decided for the exchange variation of the French opening and offered draw in an early stage of the game.

Many traveled a long distance - Brian Ayoub came up from Sierra Vista and the Slater family made the journey from Gilbert. Thanks to all for coming to our tournament! Andy Lebovitz (Left) vs. Pavel Savine (Right) Andy Lebovitz captured clear First with a 3 - score. I came in second with 2.5 points (I had to take a 1/2 point bye for the first round). Ari Slater, at 1263, took the best 1300 and under prize. Games of note: Brian Ayoub played a very tough game against Jeff Asman. Brian lost the exchange but was able to hang around to the end game with Jeff overlooked a real 'problem like' endgame solution. In the end Jeff gave up his rook for Brian's far advanced pawn leaving Brian with a lone bishop to face up to two connected passed pawns - but Brian found the magical way out and held on for a draw - nicely done Brian.
