Excerpt: Charles Wade Barkley (born February 20, 1963) is a retired American professional basketball player. Nicknamed "Sir Charles" for his aggressive and outspoken demeanor, and "The Round Mound of Rebound" for his unusual build and talent, Barkley established himself as one of the National Basketball Association's (NBA's) most dominating power forwards. He was selected to the All-NBA First Team five times, the All-NBA Second Team five times, and once to the All-NBA Third Team. He earned eleven NBA All-Star Game appearances and was named the All-Star MVP in 1991. In 1993, he was voted the league's Most Valuable Player and during the NBA's 50th anniversary, named one of the 50 Greatest Players in NBA History. He competed in the 1992 and 1996 Olympic games and won two gold medals as a member of the United States' Dream Team. In 2006, Barkley was inducted into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame. Barkley was popular with the fans and media and made the NBA's All-Interview Team for each of his last 13 seasons in the league. He was frequently involved in on- and off-court fights and sometimes stirred national controversy, as in March 1991 when he mistakenly spat on a young girl, and as in 1993 when he declared that sports figures should not be considered role models. Short for a power forward, Barkley used his strength and aggressiveness to become one of the NBA's most dominant rebounders. He was a versatile player who had the ability to score, create plays,...More: http://booksllc.net/?id=201184 ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars honest, interesting but uninspiring
If you're looking for the biography of a great man, a hero, this isn't it.But one of the good things that has come from a culture where anyone can publish a book is that you're almost certain to be able to hear both sidesof any story.Barkley has been pilloried by the media for his antics; itis interesting as a fan of sport to read Barkley's account of events andhis role in them.

Other than those details, the book's contents are notgoing to surprise you unless you're unaware of how poor black people growup in the rural South. The requisite funny anecdotes are there, along witha pro's insights into the game of basketball. But if you're looking for abiography that will inspire you, look elsewhere. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Decent book of quotes
The whole book consists of quotes from Barkley grouped by category, such as race, basketball, Phoenix, etc...I guess the other person who wrote a review is not a fan of Barkley, but this book contains some funny and witty quotes that show Barkley's strong opinions about various issues, people, etc.. If you enjoy watching Barkley on TNT I don't see why you wouldn't like this book.

Product Description
Charles Barkley has never been shy about expressing his opinions. Michael Jordan once said that we all want to say the things that Barkley says, but we don’t dare. But even die-hard followers of the all-time NBA great, the star of TNT’s Inside the NBA and CNN’s TalkBack Live, will be astonished by just how candid and provocative he is in this book—and just how big his ambitions are. Though he addresses weighty issues with a light touch and prefers to stir people to think by making them laugh, there’s nothing Charles Barkley shies away from here—not race, not class, not big money, not scandal, not politics, not personalities, nothing. “Early on,” says Washington Post columnist and ESPN talk show host Michael Wilbon in his Introduction, “Barkley made his peace with mixing it up, and decided the consequences were very much worth it to him. And that makes him as radically different in these modern celebrity times as a 6-foot-4-inch power forward.”

If there’s one thing Charles Barkley knows, it’s the crying need for honest, open discussion in this country—the more uncomfortable the subject, the more necessary the dialogue. And if the discussion leader can be as wise, irreverent, (occasionally) profane and (consistently) funny as Charles Barkley, so much the better. Many people are going to be shocked and scandalized by I May Be Wrong but I Doubt It, but many more will stand up and cheer. Like Molly Ivins or Bill O’Reilly, Charles Barkley is utterly his own thinker, and everything he says comes from deep reflection. One way or another, if more blood hasn’t reached your brain by the time you’ve finished this book, maybe you’ve been embalmed.

5-0 out of 5 stars I May Be Wrong, But I Doubt It
Barkley's book "I May Be Wrong, But I Doubt It" isn't the most well written literature of the time by any stretch, but it is full of common sense thoughts and language that most people can agree or disagree about without being disagreeable. It's like being at a bar and hearing his toughts on the various subjects and controversies that have come up in his career and in our society in the lats 20 years. I found myself shaking my head up and down and ha a hard time putting the book down.
It is an easy, relaxing read.

2-0 out of 5 stars Some old points that need restating and some boring sports stuff
I'm not a team sports fan so I only bought this book because it was selling for a buck in a fund raiser.I didn't find anything new in it, though it brought back memories of discussions I've had with friends and coworkers. But the fact that an ex pro basketball player talks frankly and positively, in a way that might reach young teens, particularly poor blacks, is a good thing.

His message is positive about working hard rather expecting things to drift our way and kids needing to look to parents as role models rather than to sports heros.

His point about how the "black community" labels as "oreos" those blacks who try to achieve reminded me of conversations I've had with some professional black collegues and friends. One was a senior military officer, the other an engineer, both brothers from Chicago. They were said they found it hard to visit their childhood friends, because the friends would label them as "Uncle Toms" or "Oreos" (black out and white in) for attempting to achieve something in life.Clearly this self-destructive idea is something blacks (and others from whatever race) need to get over.Barkley mentioned something I hadn't heard about Native Americans, which is that they sometimes refer to Natives who try to achieve as "apples", red on the outside, white on the inside.

Barkley isn't the only prominent black to point this out, but too often the Jesse Jacksons of the country don't talk about this.Unfortunately, they get listened to far too much. When the day comes that more black youth listen to the likes of Barkley, Collin Powell, Clarence Thomas, etc, they will be able to truly progress.Let's hope that happens soon.

If Barkley wants to keep on talking about the need for our country's youth to study, work hard and make something of themselves, whatever the race or gender, then I'm 100% behind him.

1-0 out of 5 stars Barkley is a Moron
After reading this book and the many "opinions" espoused by Mr. Barkley, I can fully understand while Charles was a basketball superstar and not a scholar.I for one could not recommend this book to anyone. You could likely get more insight at your local pub or barbershop.Charles - - - stick to sports commentary and try thinking before you speak.

5-0 out of 5 stars Barkley Gets It
Charles Barkley says that the goal of his book I MAY BE WRONG is to promote dialogue. If the number of times I have referenced the book since reading it is any indication, he has succeeded. Using examples from professional sports, mass media and his personal life to illustrate American structures of power and image, he makes a convincing case that racism is a structure rather than a belief. He speaks a commonsense language that invites you into his conversation, which may surprise readers who expect arrogant rhetoric. I can't wait to read WHO'S AFRAID OF A LARGE BLACK MAN? and to see how else Mr. Barkley will use his influence to change America.

3-0 out of 5 stars A little more Charles, please, and a little less editing
You never know what to expect when you tune in to Charles Barkley or begin reading one of his books, but it's safe to assume that it's going to be interesting and most likely controversial. This book lives up to those expectations. In it, Barkley covers a wide range of topics, many dealing with race or race relations in one way or another, and mostly in a sports setting.

I found the book to be interesting and, in many instances, enlightening, but also to be lacking in Barkely's usual charm and humor. And, although I agree with almost all of what Barkley had to say, I was somewhat disappointed in what he didn't say.By that I mean that Barkely seemed to look at the world from only his own perspective.I would like to have seen what he had to say about the other side of the coin. But no one else ever addresses that side of the coin either, so that was probably too much to expect.

My biggest disappointment with the book, however, was that, although its contents most likely reflect Barkely's true beliefs, its language doesn't appear to be his.I loved to watch Barkely perform as a player and have always enjoyed listening to him express his views and opinions. In this book, I had hoped to read what he had to say in his own words rather than in the more grammatically correct language of an editor.Simply throwing in the word s_ _t every now and then just didn't seem to cut it.

Product Description
In this controversial national bestseller, Charles Barkley takes on the major issue of our time in a series of charged, in-your-face conversations with some of America's most prominent figures-featuring new commentary about New Orleans and the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina.Amazon.com Review
"Racism," Charles Barkley says, "is the biggest cancer of my lifetime. And I know I can't cure the cancer, but doesn't somebody have to attack it?" Barkley's means of attack in Who's Afraid of a Large Black Man?--not surprising from one of the most outspoken athletes of our time--is to break past the taboo of race by talking about it in the open. What might be surprising is that Barkley steps aside and lets other people talk, too. While in his previous bestseller, I May Be Wrong but I Doubt It, the former NBA MVP and current TNT commentator held forth on a wide variety of subjects, for his new book he sought out a baker's dozen of leading figures in entertainment, business, and government (and yes, one athlete) and sat down with each for a frank conversation about race.

Of course race is not a simple topic, and each discussion heads in its own direction. Tiger Woods speaks both of his biracial identity and of how moving it was to see the black staff at Augusta National lined up to see him put on the green jacket as Masters champion. George Lopez talks about the pressures of creating a breakthrough Latino sitcom in an almost all-white industry. Film producer Peter Guber surprises Barkley when he says that he made The Color Purple out of economic self-interest, not idealism. Many of the discussions turn, like Guber's, not to traditional civil rights but to economics, which Rabbi Steven Leder calls the real "last taboo subject in America." It's clear that the audience Barkley most hopes to reach with this book is the young black men and women that he and many of his interview subjects are concerned about. "We're losing," activist Marian Wright Edelman tells him, "and if we don't stop this trend, we're going to be headed back to slavery." Barkley's celebrity subjects can provide some models for success for those readers, but one also hopes Barkley can continue the conversation by turning the spotlight on those struggling with the problems of race outside the sometimes protective glare of fame. --Tom Nissley

Who's Afraid of Talking to a Large Black Man?

Throughout his career, Charles Barkley has always been willing--quite willing--to call it as he sees it, making him one of the most quotable athletes of his era and, many have suggested, a future political candidate. He's as happy talking issues as talking hoops, and for his new book, Who's Afraid of a Large Black Man? he sat down for conversations across the country about the troublesome topic of race in America. We had our own conversation on the subject with Sir Charles: Read it to find why he wrote the book, what he tells his own biracial daughter about race, and why he thinks sports can be a model for race relations.

1-0 out of 5 stars Any fact checking on these stories?
After the Tiger Woods lie about being tied to a tree and his teacher didn't save him, I was wondering if there was any fact checking to this book.Because if not, it comes across as being highly racist.

3-0 out of 5 stars Unexpected, but interesting
I grabbed this in a bookstore discount bin because it was cheaper than the magazine I had in hand.I have Charles' other book and enjoyed it, so I thought it would be better time spent.

Unlike his previous book, this isn't about Charles Barkley at all.Rather, it's a series of interviews with prominent Americans with peppered comments from Charles on racism and race relations. It was a little disjointed, and I don't think it really made any points other than racism is a bad thing and someone needs to do something about it.But I will give him points for attempting to use his notoriety to call some attention to the issue, and it was great to hear from many of the people he selected.I wouldn't have expected some of the responses I read.

4-0 out of 5 stars Excellent, Timely, Relevant Interviews
I love the title, by the way.

The premise is simple.Barkley rightly sees racism as a cancer, and he believes we need to open a dialogue on the topic, so he interviews people who have something to day.I'm sure there's a list of them elsewhere in this Amazon listing.

The execution is pretty much flawless, and the subjects are chosen well. And after that, readers can simply read, enjoy, learn and ponder.A very commendable effort.

5-0 out of 5 stars Not me!
Until now, I was not much of a of Charles Barkley fan. I always saw him as a "washed up bully" and ex-basketball superstar, still trying to cash-in on his name recognition and tying to keep it in the "limelight" by saying outlandish and provocative things. I no longer think that after reading this book, which I bought after seeing it, and Barkley "unceremoniously put down" in Larry Elders incredibly ill conceived, confusing and poorly written book called "Stupid Black Men."

My thinking was that if Larry Elders didn't like Charles Barkley, then there must still be something good and redeeming about him that I had not yet discovered. And sure enough, there was: This book, which is a miniature masterpiece. Barkley is no "Stupid Black Man," as Elders has portrayed him to be.

Rather incredibly, this book is the missing dialogue on race that America has never had, and may never have. It is just the opposite of Elders' "Stupid Black Men" and the "Bill Cosby and Alvin Poussaint two-man road show:" "Come on People," in which both take the fashionable "low road of least resistance: "Just attack Black men, and you are safe: America will love you, but nothing will ever be done, and nothing will ever change:

End of the American dialogue on race.

Perhaps for the first time in American history, we get a collection of what fourteen successful and well-known people have to say about race in America -- rather than mindless ideological tripe, oozing out as more "Christianized racism," from the likes of Armstrong Williams and Larry Elders. And what these fourteen people (most of whom are black) have to say will not only surprise Cosby, Pousaint and Elders, but the rest of America as well.

Hear what Tiger Woods, Ice Cube, Barack Obama, George Lopez, Samuel L. Jackson, Morgan Freeman, and many others both black, white and other colors, have to say about the racism that still exists across the American landscape in every industry and in every town.

Rather than steal the book's thunder, I will simply say this: If one wants to know what the racial situation is like in America, they would be wise to interview some successful black people and others who understand and know the consequences of racism rather than listen to the "hired conservative media hit men" who all speak the same language: "Uncle Tom-speak."

5-0 out of 5 stars I'm Not a Basketball Fan
Although I'm not a huge basketball fan, I know who Charles Barkley is and was curious to see what type of book he would write. Consequently I was overjoyed while reading the introduction it grabbed me from the start. It's an easy read and the writers puts you at ease by making you feel as if you're listening in on a conversation with friends. I am throughly enjoying being enlightened, informed and educated all at the same time. I only wish I had know about the book when it first came out. Excellent read, I have bought numerous copies as gifts for the young men in my life. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars He's jealous, but not in the way you think
If the game's fixed, then how is Charles Barkley any better than Micheal Jordan by getting money, power and fame from it-- or at least, how does he have any room to talk, just because Jordan profits MORE?He should be suing the NBA for running a crooked game, not blaming one of its pawns. I think that he just doesn't want to bite the hand that feeds him, so he instead acts like a jealous dog and bites a pampered pet.

3-0 out of 5 stars one more word
I have mixed feelings about Michael Jordan. On the one hand, he is a great athlete.I respect his work ethic. He has turned in a number of great performances and is no doubt one of the greatest to have ever played the game of basketball.

There is a flipside.Michael Jordan got allkinds of special treatment while he was in the NBA.He was the firstplayer I noticed who was granted all kinds of trips to the charity stripebecause of unbelievably, ticky tack calls. He scored at least ten points agame at the free throw line from bogus calls. It was great when there wasa picture session for 'greats of the game' with Larry Bird, Magic Johnson, and Michael Jordan.Magic told Larry not to stand too close to Michael orthey might call a foul.In front of reporters and television viewers, thatwas a classic comment by Magic.I believe Mike got 99% of all calls in hisfavor because he was such a cash cow for the NBA.Dominique Wilkins wasrobbed of a slam dunk championship when Mike scored a perfect 50 doing thesame dunk Dr. J did years before.I doubt Dr. J ever received a perfect 50for it.Dominique's dunk was much more impressive, and he received a 49.5. Please.Mike got in a fight with Reggie Miller, and only Miller gotsuspended at first.Only after there was an outcry did Mike get suspended. How are Mike's punches different?Mike elbowed Kevin Johnson to theground for all to see, and Kevin was called for blocking!

I am not tooimpressed that the bulls beat the lakers in the NBA finals.Magic wasdouble teamed every game every minute he was in.On top of that, JamesWorthy and Byron Scott were injured.Magic and Larry never won threechampionships in a row because the competition, teams, and players in the80s were much better than the nineties.Luc Longley, Will Perdue, BillCartwright, or Bill Wennington stopping Kareem?Ha!

Sport Magazinerecently had a piece on the ten greatest moments and ten greatest playersever in the NBA.Mike was ranked number one all time player.Kudos toMike for mentioning in 'For the love of the game' that to pick a"greatest ever" is impossible because of all the different erasand evolutions of basketball. The nineties bulls were given three of theten greatest moments in NBA history. This is just more Mike bias.Give mea break. There are hundreds of classic and amazing moments in NBA history. One of the moments picked was Mike beating the Jazz in the final minutesof his last game.He put his hand on Bryon Russel's backside and shovedhim out of the way. Then Mike made the game winnig shot. All eyes were onMike, but the ref did not make the obvious call.

There is also Mike'sarrogance.According to him, Wilt Chamberlain was a fluke eventhough Wiltwas a great all around player. He made a comment about Magic and Larryreaching a 'certain level of greatness' and that the two were not good ondefense. What? Are we talking about the same Larry Bird?Shaquille Onealis also much better and much improved than Mike gives him credit for.Shaqhas turned into a solid defender, passer, and he works hard at both ends ofthe floor.

Mike's corporate poster boy behavior is laughable. He didads for AT&T and then MCI.The Wayans family is also split between thetwo companies.Mike talked about the enviroment in Rayovac ads and thenpitches hot dogs?Mike is not the only athlete who will pitch anything andeverything to make millions.I wonder if Mike has checked into Nike'slabor practices.

Players like Mike and Charles Barkley soured me ontheNBA.Charles played like a thug and got away with it because he was astar.Plus, Charles insisted on wearing number 34 at Philadelphiaeventhough it was retired for NBA great Billy Cunningham. The startreatment and inflated egos has grown old, and that has turned a lot ofpeople off to sports.I miss the Lakers and Celtics match ups of the1980s.

1-0 out of 5 stars JEALOUS
AFTER READING THIS BOOK I CONCLUDED THAT SIR CHARLES IS JEALOUS OF MICHAEL JORDAN!

5-0 out of 5 stars Great book
This book is exacatly what I wanted. It showed evert thing I expected and wanted. I not only shows the life and work of his lustrous but on his life before he was the most fundimenally sound basketball player. It showed thatnot only does he play basketball but it showed that he played 3 othersports. When I read this book I thought it would be like every other bookon him saying how great he is and all his great feats. It did but at thesame time it showed how he achieved it. It shows you how many times it tookand what it takes to be the greatest ball player in the world.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great for MJ fans, not bad for non-fan either

3-0 out of 5 stars Charles Barkley Star Forward or Big Shot
The book title is Charles Barkley Star Forward by Ron Knapp. The author supports his sentences well, but he didn't really make good complete sentences. It was like he didn't really look over the book after he had written it. If your a Suns fan and a basketball follower then this book would at least show you some history or background and also some stats about him.
The form that this book is written in was the author started on the most current part in which the book was written in and then he went back to talk about Charles' rookie years and his life. Then the author went back to the current events and explained his current results.
This book isn't very long, however it gets the points across even though the book is older the stats are correct because it takes you all the way through his whole career and life until he retired. The book shows the point of how great a player he was and how much he gave for his team. "He'll do everything he can to win a championship." -Suns head coach Paul Westphal
Charles did everything, but was unsuccessful in the first attempt at a national championship against Michael Jordan and the highflying Bulls. The book is strait forward and doesn't really tell much about his full career with the Suns and his teams before them.
This book does contain his results of his championships, stats from college, and important games with important people in the games such as other star players that were in the NBA. It also tells the awards that he had received for example, the MVP award that he got his first year with the Suns.
This book doesn't really keep you in it and I think this book should be updated and written more accurately. Right now this book would be on a fifth grade reading level, and I would recommend this book for them.
