Product Description
Man in the Middle chronicles John Amaechi’s extraordinary journey from awkward, overweight English lad to jet-setting NBA star. Along the way, he endured endless obstacles to his hoop dreams—being abandoned by his father, being cut from his first college team, recovering from a life-threatening injury, playing for abusive coaches, and losing his mother -- while also protecting a vital secret that could have ended his career: John Amaechi was gay. Now in this poignant and intimate memoir, Amaechi takes us into the hypermasculine world of professional sports and into the very center of his soul. As tender as it is brutally frank, Man in the Middle follows him from the rough streets of Manchester to Penn State (where he first achieved basketball stardom and began to recognize his sexuality) to the cities (Orlando, Houston, Salt Lake City) and countries (Greece, France) in which he played. A moving story of adversity and diversity, Man in the Middle is a testament to the power of one man’s convictions and to the universal desire to make the world a better place. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Amaechi recognizes his soul in the dark...

At ten years old, little John Amaechi was not so little. Almost six-feet tall and overweight, he stood out in his predominately white school in Manchester, England. In his highly-touted autobiography, Man In The Middle, chronicling his rise from the aforementioned awkward giant to jet-setting NBA star, he described himself as "... the worst athlete in a country not known for its athletic prowess." And he admits that by the time he was recruited at 17, he'd never even touched a basketball.

From the very first chapter I related to Amaechi's experience. I was that same awkward odd-ball as a boy - though extremely diminutive - and ball-handling skills were just not in the cards for me.Also like Amaechi, I didn't have a great love for the sport of basketball. Any sport for that matter.

Man In The Middle is touching story akin to the little engine that could, or in his case, the "whale" that could--a nickname given young Amaechi by a classmate which unfortunately stuck. Like many kids who are different, he was subjected to endless and cruel ridicule. In this book, co-authored by Chris Bull, Amaechi not only takes us into the uber-masculine world of professional basketball, he also deals with his father's abandonment, being cut from his first college team, abusive coaches, and the untimely death of his mother--all while protecting the secret which could bring his career crashing down. John Amaechi was gay.

Every great story has a part that sticks with you forever. As teenaged Amaechi mapped out his `plan' for making it to the NBA, his mother asked, "Son, would you recognize your soul in the dark?"He didn't understand. But decades later, while making the rounds of the inspirational speaking circuit for his company, Animus Consulting, he was able to boil all that ephemeral `soul in the dark' stuff down to eleven simple precepts for true success, all while being true to oneself. They will always stay with me.But you'll have to buy the book to read them.

In the wake of the release of Man In The Middle, former NBA star Tim Hardaway made a public statement that he `hates gay people'. Surprising, his baring his homophobic fangs back-fired big-time and he was removed from his positions as representative for the National Basketball Association (NBA), the Continental Basketball Association (CBA), and big money endorsements dried up despite his constant feeble apologies. Even the legendary Charles Barkley chided Hardaway and expressed wonder over how a black man could so easily discriminate. All in all, Man In The Middle is an inspirational tour de force changing attitudes in the sports world, and making people realize that being a homophobe doesn't pay. ~ Taylor Siluwé, author of Dancing With The Devil

4-0 out of 5 stars great read
Purchased this book not sure what to expect and I could not put it down!Written really well!Am glad it is now in my collection!Man in the Middle

3-0 out of 5 stars Rare humour and humility
It's a rare thing to find an autobiography written with humour and extraordinary humility, but John Amaechi has achieved that with his book. It's just as well because basketball is not exactly my favourite sport; and Amaechi presents a balanced view of his life (despite some technical references to basketball that were incomprehensible to me) with a few revealing sections. If you're reading this with the expectation of a tell-all book about a closted man, you'll be disappointed. It's an engaging read with a mix of childhood memories, self-discovery and motivational pep-talking; sometimes lacking in detail and description, but bursting with charm. My only caveat is that the book was co-written (co-author credited on the cover), which may leave you wondering how much did the man himself write. In any case, it was a pleasure to get to know something about this articulate, clever and ambitious man. Clearly it is possible for sportspeople to be funny and self-effacing! Rare, but possible.

5-0 out of 5 stars autobiography
a great book. shows what happens when a person can't be their real authenic selves.

4-0 out of 5 stars Amaechi Quite the Humanitarian
I purchased this book prior to attending a presentation that Mr. Amaechi made to a large group of educators (I didn't get to read the book until after hearing him speak). He is an outstanding orator and not quite as good a writer. I enjoyed his book, but was disappointed that he didn't spend more time discussing his struggle with his sexuality. The book spent too much time talking about his b-ball career and his time with the NBA. I found his work and efforts to help kids to be of note. I also appreciated his openess to speak of his relationship with his mother. Additionally, I enjoyed where he writes of not having the natural talent to play b-ball and yet how hard he worked to achieve the success that he found on the court as a pro player. Not my favorite read but one I appreciated nonetheless. ... Read more
