(Mar 29, 1996 - 16:58 EST) For three years, John Wallace and Lazarus Sims had bonded at Syracuse, two basketball players with vastly different skills. Wallace was a hotly recruited front-court starter, a key player for the Orangemen. Sims was a reserve who sat, first behind Adrian Autry, then behind Michael Lloyd, a point guard who was beginning to see no point. Last summer, Wallace decided it was time to move on to the NBA and filed for the draft. Sims decided he had sat long enough and, in the aftermath of his father's death, thought about passing up his final season. The word on Wallace was that he would be a low first-round pick, a perception he rejected on Friday as Syracuse prepared for the NCAA tournament semifinal game against Mississippi State. "I know I was a top 15 pick," he said. "I talked to teams. I knew exactly where I would go." What he didn't know was where Sims was going. And that was of as much concern to Wallace as his draft spot.
Seniors Are Still The Key To Basketball Success the flood of underclassmen leaving school early has made college basketball the sport andSyracuse with point guard Lazarus Sims and star forward john wallace. http://archive.sportserver.com/newsroom/ap/bkb/1996/col/bkc/feat/archive/032896/

This year's Final Four teams each advanced to the weekend at the Meadowlands with seniors playing a key role. There's top-ranked Massachusetts with bookend forwards Donta Bright and Dana Dingle; Kentucky with its outside-inside duo of Tony Delk and Walter McCarty; Mississippi State with 3-point specialist Darryl Wilson and rugged power forward Russell Walters; and Syracuse with point guard Lazarus Sims and star forward John Wallace. People can reel off the names of the underclassmen who opted for the NBA draft after last season sophomores Jerry Stackhouse and Rasheed Wallace of North Carolina, Joe Smith of Maryland and Antonio McDyess of Alabama. Then there were Arkansas juniors Corliss Williamson and Scotty Thurman and the rebuilding began after consecutive title game appearances. But last year's national champion, UCLA, couldn't have won the school's 11th title without the senior trio of Ed O'Bannon, Tyus Edney and George Zidek.

Freshman Dan Hammond (Brunswick, ME) committed a foul that sent Brock Cumberbatch to the line with a chance to put AIC back ahead. Cumberbatch missed both attempts giving the Bulldogs another life with the score knotted 68-68.
Extractions: Mike: It seems every year come tournament time everyone starts commenting about the physical play of the Big Ten teams who make it to the final 65. All year long they bang against each other in a very physical conference schedule. My question is this: does the physical play that is allowed, and even encouraged, in the Big Ten hamper them come tournament time? I believe it does. Once in the Big Dance, the referees do not allow that type of play. So is the Big Ten hurting its own teams by conditioning them to play physical in a sport that encourages finesse? Is that why it is very seldom that a Big Ten team wins it all? Ron Whittington ***Ron: The notion that NCAA Tournament officials do not allow physical play is one of the game's great myths. Especially in the early rounds, officials are so eager to get games over with quickly that players can commit felonious assault and still not be charged with fouls.
