Extractions: KEVIN FREEMAN Q. For Jake, in the second half, was it more just was anything Xs and Os you did differently? Was it playing better, that simple? JAKE VOSKUHL: I think we just picked it up, the team as a whole. We knew we had to pick it up to match their intensity. Q. Kevin, did it feel strange to be playing on the first day of the tournament? KEVIN FREEMAN: It feels strange but we had to go out there and prove ourselves. There's nothing wrong with the record we have. We're looking to win games and continue in the tournament. Q. Coach, you seem to be playing better at the right time coming into the tournament after a few weeks of struggling. What is different out there? Q. Jake, is it strange in the approach not to be one of the top-three-seeded teams in terms of not as many people predicting you guys might win it? JAKE VOSKUHL: Well, you never want it to end up that way, but sometimes it does. We just have to go out and, you know, do what we have to do to get where we want to be. So I think that, you know, maybe we're unhappy with our record, but it doesn't matter, we're going to go out and win games. It's one and done. If you don't come out and show up to play, it's done. Now you can pretty much throw all the records out the door.

Extractions: This story ran in the Courant November 5, 1999 They couldn't seem more different. One is a 6-foot-11 hunk of a basketball player. The other is 5-8 and says he has never been to a UConn game. But when Carmen Anthony Vacalebre met Jake Voskuhl at a political cocktail reception a couple of years ago at The Bushnell, he took a liking to the UConn center. Shortly after Vacalebre opened the upscale Carmen Anthony's Fishhouse in Avon last June, he attached Voskuhl's name to one of the liquor lockers in the vestibule. Sometimes, Voskuhl ate in the private dining room. And this fall, after Voskuhl's vehicle was shipped home to Texas, Vacalebre didn't think twice about offering him the use of his leased white 1999 Lexus RX 300. It was Voskuhl's use of that car, roughly over a three-week period, that led the UConn compliance and athletic departments to look deeper into the relationship.
Extractions: PHILADELPHIA (AP) - Richard Hamilton was having yet another big night from the field. His biggest moments came from the foul line after Connecticut let Villanova climb back in the final seconds. After Jake Voskuhl went down with a mild concussion, the No. 7 Huskies sagged, allowing Villanova to push the ball inside and cut a 15-point second-half gap to three with 47 seconds left. But after the Wildcats (10-15, 7-9) missed their shots on two straight possessions, Hamilton made four foul shots to give the seventh-ranked Huskies (24-4, 13-3 Big East) a 83-76 win Saturday night. Hamilton, the Big East's second-leading scorer, had 29 points, nine from the line, as Connecticut won for the eighth time in nine games. "Tonight, not only was he good early, but he was big when we needed him to be big," Huskies coach Jim Calhoun said. "When he's on the foul line, I figure, `There's two more. Let's play defense.' " But, he said, it was Voskuhl's injury that "really changed the game greatly."

Staff Directory Posted: Jan. 30, 2002 Countless times in the NBA or any other professional sport, for that matter athletes are given opportunities that can make or break their professional careers. Jake Voskuhl certainly fits into that category. Nearly three months ago, the second-year center sat all but forgotten on the Chicago Bulls depth chart behind starter Brad Miller, Croatian-import Dalibor Bagaric and two recent high school graduates Eddy Curry and Tyson Chandler, and appeared in only three preseason games. This came only one year after Voskuhl played in 16 games and barely broke a sweat with 8.9 minutes per contest after the Bulls selected him with 33rd pick in the second round of the 2000 NBA Draft. But one day before the regular season began, the Suns rescued Voskuhl from an uncertain future in Chicago, sending Soumaila Samake and a future second round pick to the Bulls. Voskuhl immediately returned the favor with an inspired performance (eight points and seven rebounds in 16 minutes) in the Suns season opener less than 24 hours after arriving in Phoenix.

What the Suns do have is significant depth at the center position for the first time in several years. Heading into the 2002-03 season, Phoenix will go three deep after the summer signing of cagey veteran Scott Williams and the return of the two Jakes Tsakalidis and Voskuhl. Jake Tsakalidis Jake Tsakalidis 2001-02 season was very Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde-ish. On one hand, Tsakalidis looked lost at the beginning of the season. He was tentative and didnt pose a threat to opposing defenses, which lead to more double teams on Stephon Marbury and Shawn Marion. All the momentum that Big Jake had gained after a promising rookie season suddenly came to a grinding halt.
