March 19, 1997 PULLMAN, Wash. - Washington State junior Carlos Daniel was named to the GTE Academic All-America men's basketball third team Wednesday. Daniel (Louisville, Colo.), a history major with a 3.52 grade point average, is just the second Washington State men's basketball player ever to earn GTE Academic All-America recognition. He joins Brian Quinnett (1985-89), who was a first team pick in 1989. Daniel put together his finest season for the 13-17 Cougars. He was second in the Pacific-10 Conference in rebounding (8.3 per game average), tenth in scoring (15.2), fifth in blocked shots (1.6) and seventh in field goal percentage (.519). Kansas senior Jacque Vaughn, a business administration major (3.72 GPA), was named the GTE Academic All-American of the Year. College Basketball Column - CBS SportsLine 3 Jayhawks seems like a basketball player second and an orator first. Robertson'sbiggest sin, it seemed, was that he wasn't jacque vaughn. http://live.sportsline.com/b/page/pressbox/archive/mar98/doddd31298.htm
Extractions: March 12, 1998 LAWRENCE, Kan. It's easy to pick Ryan Robertson out of Kansas' constellation of stars. He's all-American by birth only. He's more likely to stay longer in school for his MBA than leave early for the NBA. The only jam he'll tell you about is the one he had for breakfast. Yet at this moment, a case can be made for the 6-foot 5-inch junior point guard being as important a Jayhawk as there is heading into the NCAA Tournament. Robertson runs the team about as well as he runs his mouth, which is smooth and effortlessly. Here's a guy who thinks before he passes AND speaks. At times the conscious of the No. 3 Jayhawks seems like a basketball player second and an orator first. Ryan Robertson must step up with leadership and scoring if the Jayhawks are going to make it to the Final Four. (AP) "It's good to be reminded what that felt like," Robertson said of the stinging loss to Arizona that sent Kansas home from the Southeast Regional last season. "Last year's team was the best in the country without any doubt. This year's team seems like it's the forgotten No. 1 seed. We're kind of battling a little bit for respect." ROBERTSON SAYS IT WITH SUCH Robertson's observations are a given. He must now step up with his scoring and leadership if the Jayhawks are going to make their anticipated run to the Final Four.

Extractions: NOV. 14, 1996 SPORTS Midwest region features top talent in men's basketball (AP) Cincinnati, with relentless clawing by its defense and incessant jawing by coach Bob Huggins, has reached the NCCA Tournament's Elite Eight three times in the last five years. Could this be the season the Bearcats move up and claim a national title? Led by 6-foot-7, 260-pound Danny Fortson and bruising defense, the Bearcats are the preseason pick as No. 1, not only in Conference USA but across the country. "We've been pretty good for a long time and we want to be pretty good for a long time to come," said Huggins, adding he's not worried about the expectations or the lofty ranking. "I don't pay much attention other than to what it does for recruiting. But anybody who tells you they wouldn't want to be there is lying," he said. Fortson should have the Bearcats, who also return guard Damon Flint and long-range shooter Darnell Burton, primed for the postseason. Kansas, the preseason pick at No. 2, must find a way to compensate early on until senior guard Jacque Vaughn, who decided against going pro, recovers from a broken wrist. He's expected back in January when the inaugural Big 12 season takes off. "You don't replace Jacque Vaughn. You try to hide the weaknesses and promote the other areas where you are strong," coach Roy Williams said. "It doesn't say Jacque Vaughn on the jersey. It says 'Kansas' on the jersey. This is a team."

Extractions: LAWRENCE To realize how much influence Dean Smith has had over Roy Williams, how Smith has become as much a part of Kansas basketball as a certain bird with yellow boots, consider this quote. It came from Williams after the Jayhawks' March 1 victory over Oklahoma State, which began with Williams wearing a bow tie as part of a National Association of Basketball Coaches tribute to out-going Mount St. Mary's coach Jim Phelan. "Coach Smith always thought if you want to be recognized as a businessman and a gentleman, you should dress like one during a game, too," Williams said, explaining why he grew uncomfortable in the bow tie as opposed to a regular piece of neckwear. "And if he ever told me different, I'd probably stop wearing a tie."
