Sid Hartman: Maturi High On Szczerbiak Gophers athletic director Joel Maturi watched wally szczerbiak win many collegebasketball games for Miami of Ohio, so he has not been surprised to see http://www.startribune.com/stories/507/3650260.html
Extractions: news freetime travel homezone ... classifieds a little about... Sid Hartman is the dean of Twin Cities sports columnists. His first bylined column appeared in the Minneapolis Daily Times on Sept. 11, 1945. Since then, he's written about virtually every significant sports event and personality in Minnesota. His "close personal friends" include countless sports figures across the country, from Bobby Knight to Lou Holtz to George Steinbrenner. His columns appear on Sunday, Monday, Tuesday and Saturday. You can listen to him on WCCO Radio (830 AM) during the morning and afternoon commutes each weekday. His "Sports Huddle" show airs from 9:30 a.m. to noon on Sunday. You can send him e-mail in care of the Star Tribune's sports department A legend in his own write Sid Hartman: Maturi high on Szczerbiak Sid Hartman, Star Tribune Published February 13, 2003 Gophers athletic director Joel Maturi watched Wally Szczerbiak win many college basketball games for Miami of Ohio, so he has not been surprised to see Szczerbiak develop into a great player with the Timberwolves and make many winning baskets like he did Tuesday against Dallas. "Wally is as fine a young man as he is a basketball player," said Maturi, the former athletic director at Miami of Ohio. "I think college sports today is such that, with the limited number of scholarships and the things that have changed, that [teams] are more competitive.
Extractions: While listening to Timberwolves guard Wally Szczerbiak talk so seriously about his little toe, I was tempted to lighten the moment by breaking out in song: "Your toe bone connected to your foot bone, your foot bone connected to your ankle bone...'' It's a catchy tune that goes bone by bone all the way up to your head bone and back down again. Friday, a thought stuck in my head bone. Somebody should write a song about Szczerbiak's toe: "The toe bone is connected to your chances of making the playoffs, da, da, da." It's amazing that such a little thing as a little toe could have a gigantic impact on what happens to the Wolves this season. Before playing 16 minutes and scoring 10 points in Friday night's 115-109 overtime victory over the Sacramento Kings, Szczerbiak appeared in only four games. He missed the other 30 games because of his Tootsie Roll-sized toe. The win over the Kings put the Wolves just three games above .500, and you better believe the struggles they have had this season are related to the oddest injury anyone in the organization has ever come across.
CityBeat: Sports: Welcome To Wally World (1999-03-18) Just as Bryce Drew and Valparaiso opened our eyes last spring, the eyes ofbasketball now are fixed on wally szczerbiak and his Miami Red Hawks. http://www.citybeat.com/1999-03-18/sports.shtml
Extractions: The phenomenon has moved, however, to a newly defined manifold of time and space known as "Wally World" shortened, in some circles, to "World." It's a world not unlike the one we've always known, a world in which the championship tournaments of college basketball amuse us with upsets and unresolved tensions while proceeding, more or less, according to form. We look at the brackets to find names like UCLA, North Carolina, Stanford, Cincinnati and Utah eliminated, while those of Miami ( our Miami), Oklahoma, Gonzaga and Southwest Missouri State remain. But the top seeds Duke, Connecticut, Michigan State and Auburn are right there with them, and we can now pull back from the thrill of seeing giants fall as the cosmos assumes its predictable pattern this weekend. Only once has a team seeded 10th or higher reached the Final Four, that being LSU in 1986. At this point in the tournament, we can see clearly why the seedings are so important and why the only seed that ultimately matters is the top one. To be seeded at the top of a region guarantees an easy first-round break-in game while other worthy contenders are fighting off competitive upstarts. In the second round, the top seed never has to play anyone higher than an eight seed, while other contenders face serious trouble.
