Extractions: February 2, 1967; the birth of a franchise. It wasn't glamorous by the standards of today, with the large groups of investors, the anticipation by an entire city and a franchise fee in the hundreds of millions of dollars. No, the Amercian Basketball Association (ABA) awarded the group of John Klug, James Peters, Gary Davidson and August Spaeth a franchise in Dallas for the sum of $30,000. However, the Chaparrals, as they were christened, never even saw a game under this original ownership. The franchise was sold later in 1967 to another group which included Robert S. Folsom Jr, James L. Embrey, David Bruton Jr, Joseph W. Geary, Graham R.E. Koch and Lawrence S. Pollock Jr. The Chaparrals never really became a power in the ABA. With one of the wealthiest ownerships in the league, estimates placed their combined net worth at somewhere around $750,000,000, they never bothered to use their huge wealth on their team. The organisation rarely signed their top draft picks. Some of the picks who went unsigned included future NBA greats like Jo-Jo White, Nate "Tiny" Archibald, Bill Walton and Robert Parish. Bill Walton was one Chaparrals draft pick who went unsigned. (AP Photo/Staff)

Extractions: James Silas and Larry Kenon both had good individual years in the 1979-80 season, and George Gervin continued to dominate offensively, averaging a league best 33.1 points per game while leading the league in field goals made and attempted. The Iceman's shooting percentage was a blazing .528, and he also earned the MVP Award at the 1980 NBA All-Star Game after a 34-point, 10-rebound performance. However, the accomplishments of the Spurs offense were completely undone by the teams lack of defense. The Spurs gave up 119.7 points per game for the season, by far the worst in the league. With the team striving to improve their defense, Doug Moe, the teams head coach, was fired on March 1 and was replaced with Bob Bass, who was now in his second stint with the Spurs. Larry Kenon was traded to Chicago during the 1980 offseason. After spending the previous two years at the top of the Central Division the Spurs couldn't put together a third straight division title. The Spurs finished the season out with a mediocre 41-41 record and they were then eliminated in the first round of the NBA playoffs by the Houston Rockets.

Extractions: Experts My WVEC.com Basketball Retro NBA Jerseys Are All the Rage By PAUL NEWBERRY / Associated Press Michael Martin wanted to do some "representin'" while looking for All-Star game tickets Friday, so he slipped into a San Antonio Spurs jersey from the 1970s. "We need to bring back the tradition," said Martin, wearing a replica of James Silas' No. 13 shirt on a frigid day outside Philips Arena. "These are the people who started it. We need to show them respect." Never mind that Martin is only 21, which means he was born about the same time Silas' career was ending. Whether it's respect or just a love of garish colors, fans nationwide are gobbling up the old-style jerseys, a fashion trend that gained even more attention when high school star LeBron James was briefly suspended for accepting two free shirts from that genre. Last year, baseball teams went retro for a week. That sparked interest in such uniforms as the Houston Astros' get-up from the 1970s and '80s, the ugly ones with the orange-tinted color bar.
