White "We Have Borne Everything Patiently for This Long Time" The title of this essay comes from a speech given by the great Amerind leader Joseph Brant. It is a fitting introduction because no other minority in American history has faced the question of assimilation versus resistance for as long a period of time, and with as much at stake, as the American Indian. From first contact with whites in 1493, to the modern reservation, the Amerind has fought a battle against white encroachment on tribal lands, disease, alcoholism, and a general lack of concern from the dominant white society. It is estimated that there may have been as many as 80 million Indians in The New World at the time of discovery, and that as a result of war, diseases (the Europeans brought smallpox and other diseases with them) and mistreatment almost 40 million had died by the mid 16 th century (Rosenstiel, Red and White The two works are in essence a collection of short stories. They contain vignettes of life, some based on historical events, which give insight into the Amerind culture. On The Rez, published in 2000, gives the account of the Oglala Sioux living on the Pine Ridge Reservation and their survival in the modern world while trying to retain their dignified culture. "Fistfight" is a work written in 1993 about life on the Spokane Indian Reservation, and deals with many of the same issues as "On The Rez". These two texts explore the issue of assimilation versus resistance for the modern Amerind, and the challenge to survive in a modern society without losing their cultural identity.

Extractions: HORNETS Today at 12:30 p.m., when the Charlotte Hornets open a best-of-seven Eastern Conference semifinal series at New Jersey, theyll be without two of their top players. Yet, given all that this team has gone through this season, having Jamal Mashburn and Jamaal Magloire out of action is really not that much of a story. Its not meant to diminish either players talents or in Mashburns case a debilitating condition. Its just that this team has endured so much turmoil on and off the court this season that its almost normal to either be without a player of have an off-court issue hanging over them. This season, the Hornets have dealt with their owners year-long pursuit of another city and injuries that have cost three players significant playing time and forced a late-season surge just to make post-season play. "I dont think that Ive been around any team thats been through as much as this team has and risen as high as they have so far," said coach Paul Silas, an NBA player or coach for 32 of the last 38 seasons. "Its remarkable to me that theyve been able to sustain, given the circumstances."

Extractions: January 29, 2003 By RON BROCATO The Clarion Herald was pleased to present its list of the 100 brightest high school basketball stars to shine in New Orleans over the last century in its previous issue. We weren't quite sure what the response would be, or if there would be any at all. Well, to our surprise, the result was a clamor for a second list, raising the ante to include the 100 greatest players produced in Louisiana high schools. You gluttons. To select a list of this magnitude, the research had to be extensive. It included perusing through All-State and All-District teams from days of yore and lore to the present. Having attended Top 20 state tournaments since 1967 was invaluable, not to mention the thousands of games covered or watched over the past 36 years. THE OUTCOME was the discovery that our state's production of high school talent rivals that of most states on the Atlantic coast and New England. See for yourself. On how many teams would the great Baton Rouge High, LSU and St. Louis Hawks center Bob Pettit be placed on the second unit?

I don't know if Silas wants to coach an expansion team. I do know that he and his wife loved living in Charlotte, and Paul was easily the best coach in Hornets history. Silas wanted a contract extension before this season began. Those discussions are now tabled until the summer, when Silas' contract expires. "We tried to work something out but it didn't work to my satisfaction or theirs," Silas told the New Orleans Times-Picayune.
