Extractions: I would like to introduce myself, and share with you exactly how I feel about life. My name is Paulo Motta, and I am living my dream! A dream of helping people in life through education, sports and culture. When I was growing up, there were times that I thought basketball was everything in my life. All I wanted to do was to shoot some basketballs and work on my game. Most of the times, I found myself alone in a basketball court. As a result, I became on of the best players of my age in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. Even though my basketball career was going extremely well, I had a little problem: I wanted to study and play basketball at the same time. In Brazil, education does not go hand to hand with sports. The best competition is played at the sport club level. Usually, sport clubs dont care if their players are in school or not. All they want is to win championships. Younger athletes don't have any perspective of a promising future. I see athletes from 15 to 21 years old with no education. I see kids with great athletic potential, and nobody working with them. Some of these kids don't have any condition to pay for a bus ticket to go to the club or grabbing a bite to eat after practices. It hurts me deep inside. I am blessed to be part of a family where sports and education were always present.

Harvey Korman reprises his role as the organizer of the raid on the little town filled with Johnsons. As in the original, Korman is recruiting reinforcements for his invading horde. Oh, yes, and that he's played by an amazing, never more restrained or affecting Jack Nicholson, who somehow mesmerizes even as he disappears into this shell of a man.

"Timms flicks the ball to Maher. The skipper finds Sporn and her two points mean the Opals are into a playoff for gold." These are two possible scenarios for Australia's basketball teams in Atlanta. But the Boomers and the Opals will have to be at their peak to position themselves so near the top of their respective competitions. With the groupings for Atlanta now finalised, Australia's men's team has world powers Yugoslavia and Greece in their side of the draw and the USA, Lithuania and Croatia in the other half. In the women's section Australia is grouped with other medal contenders - USA, Ukraine and Cuba. Brazil, China and Russia are the strongest teams in the other group.

However, they have a weak schedule and to compare them to the '92 team defensively is not a compliment. Besides, teams with good defense but lackluster offense never win the tournament. It's always a team with great point and shooting guards. A: Hmmm. Was that a question? Is this what you meant to ask ...

Last week provided basketball fans a chance to commemorate the first time the United States has hosted the World Basketball Championship. The tip-off celebration at Pan American Plaza was the official opening ceremony for the tournament, which will continue through Sept. 8 in Indianapolis. The tournament represents the culmination of years of preparation by delegations, organizers and volunteers. One of the co-hosts, Bill Benner, director of media relations for Indiana Sports Corporation, spoke on the significance of the event. It is the first time in the 52-year history of this event that its been in the United States and that they chose Indianapolis is a real tribute, he said. We think its only appropriate. This is the basketball capital of the world, certainly the basketball capital of America. Music performed by the Cool Chilies filled the air as spectators crowded into the plaza. The aroma of spicy chicken lingered as fans met up with new and old friends.
Extractions: No matter who wins Best Supporting Actress at this year's Oscars, it'll be a category notable for its varied - and colorful - characters. Take nominee Kathy Bates. In her role as a bohemian artist in "About Schmidt," the 54-year-old has a nude scene in a hot tub with Jack Nicholson, a more talked-about moment than any Jacuzzi encounter in "The Bachelorette."

William West/AFP SYDNEY, Australia (AP) Lithuania's third straight bronze medal meant no medal again for five-time Olympian Andrew Gaze. Just two days after giving the United States the biggest scare in men's Olympic basketball history, Lithuania beat Australia 89-71 in the third-place game Sunday (Saturday night EDT). Lithuania has won the bronze medal in each of its three Olympic appearances, starting with the 1992 Games. "This young team didn't leave the level we played at the previous games," Lithuania coach Jonas Kazluskas said. "We kept the same level high level. It's no secret we're happy with another bronze medal. We are pleased with what we did." Gaze was playing in his fifth and final Olympics in front of a home crowd that cheered every time his name was said let alone when he scored. He will have to settle for the record for most games played (40) and second place on the career scoring list to Brazil's Oscar Schmidt.

BBC News Online charts his enduring career. Jack Nicholson is seen as a true Tinseltown icon - an award-winning, charismatic bad boy actor. His own life reads like a Hollywood script. He was raised by his grandmother who he believed was his mother, while his real mother was passed off as his big sister. There is a long line of beautiful girlfriends littering his past, including actresses Angelica Huston and Lara Flynn Boyle, ensuring he has stayed in both the review and gossip pages. The 65-year-old's ability to appeal to new generations, while often playing similar quirky characters, has kept him at the top for decades. If Nicholson builds on his 2002 Golden Globe success and wins the best actor Oscar for About Schmidt he will have collected the coveted statue in each of four decades to add to his seven Golden Globes.
