Extractions: John Salley is still making slams not on a basketball court anymore but on a television set as a co-host of Fox Sports "Best Damn Sports Show Period." Determination propelled Salley from the projects of Brooklyn, N.Y., to Georgia Tech to NBA championships. That same drive pushed him toward success in his second career. He was an imposing player for the Yellow Jackets. He immediately became an impact player on a team full of talent. Salley was named to All-ACC teams in 1986 and 1987 and the All-America second team in 1986. At his final home game on March 2, 1986, his No. 22 jersey was retired to the rafters in Alexander Memorial Coliseum. He was inducted into the Georgia Tech Hall of Fame in 1991. Although he turned pro in 1986, Salley wasnt ready to end his Georgia Tech run without a degree. By 1987, Salley, already a millionaire, could have enjoyed the easy life, but the lack of a degree nagged him. He returned to Tech in the Detroit Pistons off-season and finished his academic work in 1988, earning a bachelors degree in industrial management with a minor in marketing. The Pistons drafted Salley in the first round in June 1986. The rough-and-tumble Pistons were on the verge of becoming a championship club, loaded with a roster of stars like Isiah Thomas, Bill Laimbeer and Adrian Dantley and coached by the legendary Chuck Daly. Salley signed a five-year deal for $2.2 million. He has said that he immediately did two things with his newfound wealth. He built his parents a house in Atlanta and he bought his father a Lincoln Continental.

Extractions: When the University of Miami was looking for someone to take over the reigns of the up-and-coming Hurricanes mens basketball program there was one name that continued to rise to the top of the list: Perry Clark. In more than 23 years of collegiate coaching, the last 13 as a head coach, Clark has done one thing consistently - win. As a head coach, Clark has a 225-166 (.575) record including 11 winning seasons, seven 20-win seasons and nine postseason appearances. He has been a part of building some of the nations top programs including his remarkable rebuilding job as head coach of Tulane. He has learned from some of the greatest basketball coaches the sport has known including Bobby Cremins at Georgia Tech and legendary prep coach Morgan Wooten at DeMatha Catholic High School. And he is a proven cultivator of talent having coached 17 players who have been drafted or have gone on to play in the National Basketball Association. So it was no surprise on July 6, 2000 when Miami Athletic Director Paul Dee announced that Clark would be the Hurricanes ninth head basketball coach.

Extractions: As the 1996-97 Yellow Jacket basketball season reaches its climax, its a good time to reflect with pride on Tech's basketball legacy. Tech's first team to take to the hardwood court in 1906 was a small club under Coach Chapman. The team won two of the three games played that first season, starting a rich tradition of winning that has grown to an auspicious team record over the years. Tech failed to field another team until 1909, when Coach John Heisman, who had been hired by the Institute to coach football and baseball, led the Jackets, in a disappointing second season for only one win against six losses.Tech's next teams in 1913 and 1914 had a two -year record of a perfect .500. Heisman's efforts were spread a little too thin to meet all of the demands of building and maintaining a national champion football team, as well as a first - rate baseball team, so the basketball program at Tech fell into abandon until Coach William Alexander, Tech's much loved `"Captain of the Scrubs", who led his own national championship football team as well as coaching football for 24 years, revived the Yellow Jacket basketball program in his first year after taking the reins from Coach Heisman. Tech has had a vibrant program ever since 1920 and has always enjoyed success and recognition. The Yellow Jackets won their first conference championship in 1938 when they won the SEC title for that year.
