Extractions: Kurt Rambis, in his career has always been a class act when it comes to signing autographs for fans. In my many years of following the Lakers, I have NEVER seen Kurt turn down a request for a signature. He has always been more than courteous and made sure everyone had an autograph. On many occasions after the mobs cleared, Kurt's often said "Anyone else?" He even took the time to make sure the fan had something behind it,so he could scribble a nice auto. He is always willing to take a photograph as well. However, now that Kurt does not travel with the team as a Player, Assistant, or Head Coach, his autograph is much harder to obtain for people outside Los Angeles. Someone faking a Kurt Rambis autograph is truly a disgrace to the hobby and to fans everywhere. But it has been done. I have seen a few really horrible attempts at ripping off an honest collector. Kurt has always been very generous through the mail as well. (Recently, at the new El Seguendo addy I've had not luck). AP LOS ANGELES (AP) Los Angeles Lakers coach Kurt Rambis decided it was time for Dennis Rodman to leave, and never return. Thus, the Rodman experiment with the Lakers was deemed a failure after seven bizarre weeks. "I think it was justified," Lakers standout Kobe Bryant said Friday in the wake of Rodman's release by the team a night earlier. "When a guy shows up continuously late ... Yeah, it was definitely justified." Rambis, who took over as coach of the Lakers on Feb. 26, the same day Rodman played his first game with the team, recommended to management that the seven-time NBA rebounding champion be cut loose after yet another incident Thursday. According to Rambis, Rodman arrived late for the team's practice at Los Angeles Southwest College, and was slow getting ready because he couldn't find his socks and shoes.

A forward on four Lakers NBA championship teams, the 41-year-old Rambis replaces Del Harris, who was fired Wednesday after the Lakers lost three straight to fall to 6-6. Rambis' coaching debut was to come only hours after he was hired, in a rematch at the Forum against the Clippers. It also was to be Rodman's first game in a Lakers uniform.

Extractions: CUPERTINO HIGH SCHOOL BASKETBALL HISTORY Cupertino High School has the distinction of having one of the most successful basketball programs in the Southbay. Tino has won 10 league titles and 2 CCS Championships in 43 seasons under nine coaches. Tino has produced two professional players and an NBA assistant coach. Others players have gone on to have successful college careers. Cupertino High School opened in 1958 to accommodate the swelling masses of emigrants into the Santa Clara Valley. Cupertino became the third high school in the district, opening its doors to transfer sophomores and incoming freshmen in the fall of 1958. The nickname Pioneers was chosen by those pioneering students. Paul Ferdinandsen stepped into a high school that consisted of only freshmen and sophomores. During the first year of Cupertino's existence, varsity sports were not played. Don Ratzlaff and Rich Gutierrez were the Pioneers first top players, both scoring over 500 career points in three varsity seasons. Doug McCune became CHS's first 15 point per game scorer in 1965. The Pioneers first winning season was in 1963, but the first great Cupertino team took the court in 1967. That group included Mike McGory and Rick Korte, two of the Pioneers greatest players. The '67 team was the first league championship team for Pioneers basketball. McGory averaged 20 points a game in league in leading the Pioneers to their first post-season. They were defeated in the playoffs by perennial favorite Bishop O'Dowd and finished fourth in the Peninsula Basketball Tournament. One truly amazing accomplishment of that season was that six players scored at least 12 or more points in one non-league game against Westmont.
