Extractions: March 29, 2001 Kukoc Opening Statement: Actually, I am very happy to go back to Treviso. I dont know if it is known that I spent two years of my professional career playing there for Benetton and its a great organization with great people. I really think they are, with the NBA, doing a great thing making this camp. So, hopefully we will all go and have fun. Q: What kind of example from past experiences can you use to connect with the kids? Kukoc: As you know, I grew up in Split in Croatia, which was a part of the ex-Yugoslavia before the war started. So, its going to be pretty easy for me to connect with the kids. Obviously, they are going to have plenty of questions about European and the NBA experience, so Ill be more than glad to talk about that and talk about basketball in general. And, I think the basketball is a great way to actually be involved in a sport, get the friends outside of the streets, which is a risk to get involved in drugs and these, lets call them not-good things. Q: Is three days enough to really have the time to create a special environment?

Extractions: November 5, 1996 Image of the 1996 Olympic Games: John Stockton dives out of bounds after a loose ball. Instead of flipping the ball back in bounds, which appears to be all he can do, Stockton somehow throws a perfect pass over his shoulder 40 feet into the hands of a teammate breaking for a slam dunk. Question for he 1996-97 NBA regular season: Will the greatest playmaker in NBA history be able to continue making plays like this? If history means anything, Stockton and other Dream Teamers might need a wakeup call to complete the transition from the Olympics back to the NBA. Four years ago, members of the original Dream Team struggled through a difficult NBA season. One of them, Magic Johnson, already was in retirement and stayed there. Larry Bird retired. Christian Laettner went from college to pro basketball. WITH THREE EXCEPTIONS, THE REST of the Dream Teamers experienced nightmares. After playing in the Olympics, Charles Barkley and Karl Malone improved their TENDEX ratings over the 1991-92 season. Malone's rating rose from .798 to .832. Barkley's went up from .745 to .816. Patrick Ewing's rating stayed about the same. Everybody else slumped: Michael Jordan's TENDEX rating slipped below .800 for the only time during the 1990s and then, in utter burnout, he retired.

So is the essence of sports. This is the theme that runs through Ice Time as easily as a puck over a frozen pond. The place is Methuen, Mass., a blue-collar town north of Boston, one of those places where kids come of age in the early morning hours on cold rinks, and where hockey culture is as omnipresent as soft ice; one of those places where kids grow up dreaming of playing for the high school team, not realizing that, in all probability, that is where their careers are going to end. Jay Atkinson once was one of those kids. Now, in his early 40s, and with a 5-year-old son who already has the hockey bug, he returns to his old high school to spend a season with the Methuen Rangers. It's a memorable journey, part reportage, part memoir, all heart. Atkinson, who teaches at Salem State College in real life, is old enough to realize what the kids he's writing about can't realize yet: That it often doesn't get any better than being 17 and playing for your hometown high school. "I have often fantasized about going back to high school, to take one shot at that defining period in my life," Atkinson writes. "This book details my return to Methuen High after 25 years in order to discover what it was about my experience there and on the ice that shaped me and my future."
The Spring Of Competitiveness outside of the United States is represented in the National basketball Associationby NBA teams Tony Kukoc plays for the Chicago Bulls, dino radja for the http://www.croatiaemb.org/C_U_relations/Cro&USA/part13.htm
Extractions: The Spring of Competitiveness Kresimir Cosic, whose memory lives so vividly at the Croatian Embassy in Washington where he served until his early death as Minister Counselor, was inducted to the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame in May of 1996. This event reaffirmed his stature as one of Europe's best players, his skills being so finely developed to attract serious offers from several NBA teams. Beside Kresimir Cosic, there are other members of the Hall of Fame that Croatia claims as its own, including George Mikan and "Pistol" Pete Maravich who were of Croatian origin, as are probable future Hall-of-Famers, former player and Houston Rockets' coach and two times NBA champion coach Rudy Tomjanovich and Boston Celtics' great, Kevin McHalle. Beside basketball, Croatians star in other sports popular in the United States. Prominent Croatian athletes include Stanley Cup winner and MVP Joe Sakic from the Colorado Avalanche, NFL quarterback Elvis Grbac from the San Francisco 49ers, Green Bay Packers' Tony Mandarich, and Chicago Bears' Chris Zorich, just to name the few. America's favorite pastime, baseball, also witnessed a significant contribution to its success by players that have their roots in Croatia. The Cleveland Indians had an outstanding pitcher in Al Milnar, Roger Maris became famous for his home runs, etc. Some of the players that came from Croatia'or their ancestors'changed their names upon arriving, adjusting them to English language spelling. That is the reason that some of them were not known to the wider audience as Croats or as of Croatian decent, but stories about them and their successes live among the Croatian American community.
Adriatic Countries Plan To Form A Basketball League only basketball player to have been on the winning team in three European team championshipsand three NBA championships. Another Croatian player, dino radja, http://www.balkantimes.com/html2/english/2893.htm
Extractions: DOBRI DO, Croatia Representatives of three leading Croatian basketball teams (Cibona, Split and Zadar) met recently to discuss the start of the Adriatic Basketball League (ABL). A report in the Vjesnik newspaper suggested the league could bring significant financial revenues to the teams and turn the region, noted for its talented players, into a major basketball centre in Europe. ABL organizers were confident that the league would be in operation by 1 October 2001, but some of the teams in the region remained sceptical. Initially the league was to comprise the best teams from Bosnia and Herzegovina, Croatia, Montenegro and Slovenia. Serbia and Italy were expected to join at a later date. According to Vjesnik, a major point being discussed was whether the "Adriatic teams" should play the entire season in their national leagues or only in their national play-offs. Teams from the former Yugoslavia have a strong history in the sport. They dominated European basketball during the '80s and early '90s. The Yugoslav national team won three World Championships (1970, 1978 and 1990), five European Championships between 1973 and 1991, and captured the 1980 Olympic gold in Moscow. Croatian teams won five European Champions' Cups. Partizan of Serbia won the 1989 Radivoje Korac Cup and the 1992 European Champions Cup. After the break-up of Yugoslavia in the early '90s, basketball witnessed a slight decline. Yet Croatia was able to win a silver medal at the 1992 Olympics in Barcelona, a bronze at both the World Championship in 1994 and the European Championships in 1995.
