Coach Larry Brown's USA squad had hopes of capturing the United States' third FIBA Junior World Championship in as many tries, and with a talented roster featuring 6'7" Lionel Simmons, 6'2" Stephen Thompson, 7'2" Dwayne Schintzius and 6'6" Larry Johnson, the U.S. optimism was rightfully high. Opening the competition facing Puerto Rico, the United States, led by Thompson's 19 points and 16 points each from Ron Huery and Schintzius, recorded a solid 109-89 victory. Simmons accounted for 16 points as the U.S. held off Australia 84-80, then, one day later, the Americans man-handled China, 100-50, as Simmons scored 21 points.

Extractions: Sport Text Source: www.hr/darko/etf/sport.html Darko Zubrinic Probably the earliest known description of a sporting event in Croatia is from the year 1767. It referred to the regatta of two fishing boats representing the cities of Split and Makarska, from an islet near Milna on the island of Brac to the Split harbour. It was the Makaran boat that triumphed! The first international football [soccer] match where Croatia participated with its national name was held in 1907 (with Czechia). The Croatian Sporting Union was founded in Zagreb in 1909. In 1911 the Croatian national team participated under its flag (and with its national name) on the European championship in Torino. In 1912 Franjo Gregl was the European champion in bicycling. Franjo Mihalic (1921) started his active sporting career in the period of the Independent State of Croatia (1941-1945), and after 1945 had to move to Belgrade, together with many other best Croatian sportsmen. He won a silver medal in Marathon at the Olympic Games in Melbourne (1956); he was the winner of the International races in Sao Paulo (1952, 1954), as well as Marathon races in Tokyo, Moscow, Boston, Athens, Cross de Nations in Paris (1950-1961).
About World Basketball/Men About World basketball. Croatia will bring Toni Kukoc, the NBA Sixth Man of the Yearfor the Chicago Bulls, plus dino radja (Boston) and former Rocket Zan Tabak http://www.chron.com/content/chronicle/sports/oly/spc/2/m-bkb-world.0-0.html
Extractions: 11:37 PM 7/3/1996 Lenny Wilkens has been keeping tabs on world events, and one thing is clear. Not all the copycats are working in the NBA. "I watched the European championships last summer, and there was a difference in what they're doing," he said. "They're running a lot of things that we run now, and they're getting better and better at it. "I understand it, and I'm going to make my players understand it." In addition to the strategies, some of the visitors' faces will be familiar, too. Croatia will bring Toni Kukoc, the NBA Sixth Man of the Year for the Chicago Bulls, plus Dino Radja (Boston) and former Rocket Zan Tabak (now with Toronto). Kukoc has played all five positions for the Bulls at various times, while Radja led the Celtics in scoring (19.7), rebounding (9.8) and blocked shots (1.53) this year. Yugoslavia, the European champion led by Vlade Divac and Miami guard Predrag Danilovic, also expects to be a contender. Lithuania, in turn, has Arvydas Sabonis (Portland) and veteran NBA guard Sharunas Marciulionis. "You have to respect the European champion,"said Wilkens. "And Lithuania (second in Europe) will be even better this year."
Rick Pitino And Larry Brown Ignite Celtic, 76er Rivalry that radja couldn't play an NBA season. When dino left us two weeks ago he lookedgreat, Pitino said. He was playing tennis, playing oneon-one basketball. http://www.tassie.net.au/~cmathew/rivalry.htm
Extractions: Rick Pitino and Larry Brown ignite Celtic, 76er Rivalry One of the great things to come out of this years draft is the revival of Celtic-76er rivalry. New Sixers coach Larry Brown seems to enjoy beating new Celtics coach Rick Pitino. It is well known that Pitino wanted Van Horn out of this draft and the Sixers, interested in Villanova freshman Tim Thomas. They couldn't simply just draft Thomas when they could keep Pitino from getting the guy he wants at the same time. Bad blood is now speeding through the northeast corridor between Philly and Beantown. The cancelation of the Dino Radja trade just gave Brown and new vice president Billy King more motivation. The way Brown feels about Pitino was made obvious on draft night when he referred to him as "this guy with choir (boy) eyes." So now there is war between the 76ers and Celtics, and it couldn't come at a better time. Both teams have been down and out for some time now and both teams are rebuilding their storied franchise led by ruthless coaches and deal makers. Thomas promises to be a centre piece for Philly, in the battles on the court that are sure to follow. However, through his freshman year at Villanova, he showed virtually no improvement as his college season progressed. Brown will teach Thomas how to play basketball, and will not tolerate Thomas standing around the three point line, waiting for the ball to come to him. What makes it even sweeter is how they got the guy they wanted and stuck it in Pitino too.

The 2001-02 season featured more than 50 international players from 30 countries and territories, including four players from Canada . The league's international players are making their mark, establishing themselves among the NBA elite. The NBA Draft: Selecting International Talent Choosing an international player in the NBA Draft may require patience, as some are unable to play in the NBA immediately due to contracts with non-NBA teams. Toni Kukoc (Croatia) was selected by Chicago in 1990, but did not play for the team until three years later. Considering Kukoc's success in the NBA, such players are well worth the wait. NBA teams now spend as much as 20 per cent of their scouting budget on overseas scouting. The attraction of big centres in Asia and skilled swingmen from Europe make it a necessity for NBA teams to scout foreign talent.

The Man Who Would Be King Yet his team is perhaps best known for losing one of the most hotly contested Western Conference Finals to the Los Angles Lakers last year. You might think Lakers center Shaquille ONeal, who wins championships by tossing men like Divac around like rag dolls, would be an uncomfortable topic for Divac, but he isnt crying about it. Shaquille ONeal, he explains, is not really for me to worry about. The stately 7-1 Serb has checked into a swanky Dallas Hotel suite, and he is eager to get some food before bed. But he is a patient man, so when the suites three phones ring with yet another reporter wanting to ask him about his ostensible nemesis-the biggest man in the NBA-Divac settles into the chair and starts talking.

Extractions: Inquirer News Service SO MUCH ink has been written about the United States' shocking demise at the recently-concluded World Basketball Championships. Writers the world over have offered more reasons for the loss of the US team than there were spectators at the Conseco Fieldhouse and RCA Superdome. But, honestly, is it really any surprise that Yugoslavia won the championship and Team USA finally lost a game (actually three) with NBA players? Consider this: it was not at last week's Worlds that the best cagers from Yugoslavia first convincingly beat the best from America. That honor belongs to the Yugoslavian Junior Men's team of 1987, who beat Team USA not once but twice by double digits. The best 18- and 19-year-old Yugoslavs defeated the best 18- and 19-year-old Americans at the 1987 World Junior Basketball Championships, once during the elimination round (110-95) and again during the championship game (86-76). In the first game, a thin six-foot-eleven 19-year-old named Toni Kukoc dropped 11 three-point-shots on the Americans en route to 37 points. In the deciding game, a pair of big boys named Vlade Divac and Dino Radja combined for 41 points and 25 rebounds to pace the Europeans. Among the Americans were future NBA players Gary Payton, Larry Johnson, Stacey Augmon, Scott Williams, and Brian Williams.
