Extractions: Associated Press CHARLOTTE, N.C. For three months, the retired jersey of Bobby Phills hung alone high in the rafters of the Charlotte Coliseum, the only remaining sign that the NBA ever existed in this city. When the Hornets packed up and moved to New Orleans after 14 years in Charlotte, they left behind the tribute to Phills, a popular player and team captain who was killed in a car accident over two years ago. Now it too is gone, removed recently and given to Phills' widow. City leaders have moved on, too - already negotiating with the NBA in hopes of landing an expansion team.

2000 NFL Mock Draft: Round One my respects to former Hornets guard bobby phills who died this week in a car accident.bobby, You no one ever doubted you're skill as a basketball player, but http://www.footballsfuture.com/2000/horwedel_mock1.html
Extractions: By: Chris Horwedel Round 2 Round 3 (Before I start writing this version of my mock draft I would like to pay my respects to former Hornets guard Bobby Phills who died this week in a car accident. Bobby, You no one ever doubted you're skill as a basketball player, but what made you special was you skills as a man. To often people look upon athletes and forget that they too, are human. Bobby was a classy person, a good person. If I ever have kids, I wish they could turn out to be like Bobby Phills. For years people close to Bobby urged him to go into politics, he was a very intelligent and articulate man who was bound for greatness from the day of his birth. This world lost a special person when we lost Bobby Phills. This goes out too David Wesley, If by some off chance you ever read this, I know you're taking this hard. But it wasn't your fault. It wasn't anyone's fault. It's not fair, but sometimes bad things happen to good people and Bobby was a great person) 1 Cleveland Browns - It's the beginning of another long day for the Browns crew. Given that the NFL has allocated them like ..30 picks. They have nothing on this team but a couple of linebackers, a QB and one reciever, so they could do anything here. The first pick in the 2000 NFL draft:

Extractions: WASHINGTON, D.C. Despite their differences in age, these two men had several things in common! They were not No. 1 draft choices who signed multi-million dollar contracts. They did it the old fashioned way. They earned it. Both were Black men, and each played semi-pro ball before making it to the bright lights and big cities of the NBA and NFL, respectively. There the similarities end. Woody Strode helped pave the way for young athletes like Bobby Phills and his colleagues of the NBA and NFL. Woody Strode was an outstanding pass-catching end during his playing days at UCLA. His teammates were men like the great Kenny Washington and the legendary Jackie Robinson. Strode and teammate Washington helped break down the color barrier of the NFL. As early as 1920, the NFL allowed Blacks, like the great Paul Robeson and Fritz Pollard, to play. But, under pressure from white players who were losing their positions to these great athletes, racial lines were reinstated in 1934. In 1946, Strode and Washington, again, opened the doors of the NFL. It was one year before Jackie Robinson broke down the major league baseball doors!

And while he never played in a regular-season game with Milwaukee, the Bucks tried desperately to keep him as long as they could before finally having to release him. Phills was killed in a three-vehicle accident at about 11 a.m. shortly after leaving a morning shootaround at the Charlotte Coliseum. According to police, Phills was traveling at a "very high rate of speed" when his black Porsche skidded and collided with a car headed toward the arena. A minivan then rear-ended the other vehicle.

Extractions: Because former Charlotte Hornet Bobby Phills played in the National Basketball Association, he was a role model. His foolish car wreck and subsequent death was tragic. The NBA and the press handled the story differently, but both sent poor messages. Phills, 30, crashed his modified Porsche on Jan. 12, careening headlong into traffic and another car. Phills was killed, and two others were injured in the accident. Early police reports said Phills and teammate David Wesley were traveling at speeds over 75 mph. Police now estimate that Phills topped out at 107 mph and Wesley at 110. NBA officials had nothing but praise for Phills. Not only was Bobby a tremendous person, but a great husband, father and role model that everyone respected and admired, said Hornets owner George Shinn. He was someone that you would want your children to be like. Cleveland Cavaliers owner Wayne Embry reiterated the sentiment: (Phills) was all that you would want in a human being.
