Extractions: "There is a perception of Michael Redd right now. Hes a good player, but he scored a lot of points on a bad team (last year)," OBrien said. "I think that Michael now will have an opportunity to become a much better basketball player, instead of a player who is just trying to score." Joining Redd at guard is James "Scoonie" Penn, who will run the point. Penn transferred from Boston College before last season. He came over with OBrien, who also left the Golden Eagles after the 1996-97 season. The 5-foot-10, 175-pound guard was the 1996 Big East Conference and ECAC Rookie of the Year after averaging 13.2 points, 3.5 assists and 3.4 rebounds per game. He was also selected First-Team All-Big East while leading Boston College to the conference tournament championship. Redd and Penn might already be in sync with each other since they toured all summer together. Their college all-star squad finished second in the Acropolis Cup in Athens, Greece. OBrien looks forward to having these two play together. "Now we have two kids that other teams have to guard and be mindful of," OBrien said.

In the 1998-1999 season, he helped spark the largest turn-around in the history of college basketball by leading the last place Buckeyes into the Final Four during his first year with the program. He capped his college career by taking the Buckeyes to a Big Ten regular season crown during his senior year.

Extractions: POINT GUARD HALL OF FAME: THE UNDERDOGS "It's like bread and water. You just are going to survive without one or two. You can play with almost any void, but a point guard. You don't have to have a center. You don't have to have a power forward. But you got to have a point guard ." Point Guard , in my opinion, is the most important position on the floor. It also happens to be the most popular position, since point guards are typically the shortest, and thus the most common, of basketball players. However, it is the intangibles that make a point guard, and to come upon a true PG is very rare indeed. Unlike 7'0" centers, points guards, who are about the same size as any average person, were not automatic basketball prodigies. In fact, they were usually the smallest guys on their team, the ones who got beat up on the courts time and time again. Few made it out of their own backyards, and of those who did, even fewer were able to maintain staying power on the next level. The point guards in my HOF are not necessarily the best in their respective leagues. In fact, some aren't even the best on their team bench. Like all PGs, their teammates either thrive or die on their every move. But there's just that little extra something about them, something special that can't be taught. It's the difference between a jumper off of a screen and a reverse layup over the shot-blocker. The difference between hitting a 15-footer at the tipoff and hitting a clutch trey at the buzzer. The difference between calling out the team's plays and infusing the team's personality.

Extractions: Free Press Sports Writer KNOXVILLE, Tenn. A fortunate thing happened to Jim O'Brien when he left Boston College to coach at Ohio State: Scoonie Penn followed his path. They didn't exactly share moving expenses. "I took the whole summer to think about what my options were before I transferred," said Penn, a 5-foot-10 guard from Salem, Mass. "I wasn't sure I wanted to leave home, but the way the BC program was going, I didn't think I wanted to be part of it." The other part of O'Brien's equation was making sure Michael Redd didn't want to transfer after the Buckeyes went 8-22 in his first season. "I've lived in Columbus all my life, and I remember the great teams with Jimmy Jackson," Redd said of the 1991 and '92 Buckeyes. "Then the last five or six years they called us Suckeyes instead of Buckeyes. I've seen it all. "I chose to come to Ohio State and see if it would turn around, and I'm glad to see it is." Penn was forced to sit out last season under the transfer rule, but Redd was a freshman on a team that went 1-15 in the Big Ten. "The hardest thing about it was sitting out and watching these guys go 8-22 and knowing there was nothing I could do about it," Penn said. He made up for lost time this winter by teaming with Redd to lift Ohio State to the NCAA tournament for the first time in seven years. The Buckeyes take a 26-8 record against St. John's tonight in the South Regional final.

The three point guards who took their teams to the Final Four in March rode together in a limo to and from the Chicago airport last summer. They were in Chicago courtesy of Playboy magazine, which selected them as preseason All-Americas. "I saw another side of Mateen Cleaves," Penn said. "I heard he was cocky. I heard he'll talk trash. I didn't see none of it. Me, him and Khalid just talked about games and the Final Four. We hung out all weekend. We were inseparable." HEADS UP: Iowa point guard Dean Oliver has a lot of respect for Michigan State, but he would like to see its run as Big Ten champion end. "We're not the only team tired of seeing them win this thing," said Oliver, who led Iowa in scoring and assists last season. "They definitely have a target on their back.
