Extractions: Ohio State 2000-2001 will be a much different squad from Ohio State 1999-2000. The team's flashy guards, Scoonie Penn and Michael Redd, are gone, as are their outstanding driving and shooting abilities from the outside. Thus, expect senior All-America candidate Johnson to become the leader of the offense; Johnson has the physical strength and shooting touch to be a major player in the Big Ten and might just be the conference's best center. However, he will need help - forwards Ocokoljic and Dudley are unproven in the frontcourt. Point guard Brown has the potential to come into his own this season; if so, he will give the Buckeyes a second offensive weapon and keep them competitive in the middle of the Big Ten pack. This team is big, talented, and well coached; however, it lacks the experience and mobility of past Ohio State squads.

Extractions: Except if a Big 10 team is playing UM, or a team a friend may play on, I almost always root for them. So i'm glad to see alot of Big 10 teams doing well in recruiting. Here are my thoughts on next years incoming classes in the Big 10, including Transfers and Prop 48. (Does not include UM, who I think right now has the 2nd best class in the Big 10). 1. ILLINOIS FIGHTING ILLINI - Marcus Griffin, 6-9, F/C, No. 1 Juco, #8 Brian Cook, 6-10, C/F; and Frankie Williams, 6-4, 1/2G, gives Illinois three Top 25 players coming out of High School. Griffin and Cook will likely both start right away. Williams also might start, but he will likely begin coming off the bench. Jerrance Howard gives the Illini a very capable backup PG. A very talentd class. Should help Lon Krugar get Illinois back to the upper half of the Big 10. And remember, the state of Illinois is loaded with talent in next years class. 2. MICHIGAN STATE SPARTANS - Mike Chappell, 6-8, SF, was a part time starter at Duke, a Top 25 player coming out of High School, and a very talented wing man. Could start right away at State. #81 Al Anagonye, 6-7, PF, gives State a tough post man to help ease the loss of Antonio Smith. #148 Adam Wolfe, 6-8, P/SF, should also help there. But his minutes, along with 6-9 C/F Jason Andreas will likely come down the road. The prize of this class however is #12 Jason Richardson. All summer people were saying he was just a great athlete. That he is. But Jason has developed a perimeter game to compliment his outstanding athletic ability. Should not only be one of the Big 10's top players, but in a couple years, one of the nations best. The state of Michigan could have two Top 10 teams in a few years. Like Illinois, the state of Michigan is also loaded with talent in the Junior class.

Extractions: Let's not waste time. It's Duke. You know it's Duke. I know it's Duke. More importantly for this column, our resident expert, Jim Boeheim, knows it's Duke. Boeheim has been picking the national champion in this space for eight years now, and he's been right five times. One year he picked Kentucky, and three weeks later Syracuse was playing Kentucky in the championship game! And Boeheim got it right. Kentucky won. This year Boeheim claims no great insight. "I'm like everybody else," he says in picking Duke. "You can't help but be right." The greater questions: 1. How many Big Ten teams will be out by Sunday? (I say at least four.) 2. How badly did the College of Charleston get hosed? (Huge. At worst they should have been a No. 5 seed, not No. 8. They've won 25 in a row. They beat North Carolina! They shouldn't have to get Duke in the second round. If Charleston is an eighth seed, I'm Brad Pitt.) 3. Who do you have in the pool?

(Source/AP) THE TEAMS have been announced and the NCAA tournament bid committee can return to their lives now that the eyes of the sports world are no longer watching them closer than the Sports Illustrated swimsuit issue. Like every year at this time a few teams left out have a gripe. This year it seems the committee was good to the mid-major conferences like the Missouri Valley and West Coast Conference on Selection Sunday. Good teams from power conferences like Virginia and Vanderbilt were both left off the dance card despite having impressive wins on their schedule. Former No. 1 Cincinnati was headed for a top seed but was relegated to a two-seed once consensus player of the year Kenyon Martin was sidelined with a broken leg, and they lost their opening game in the Conference USA Tournament.

The Gophers men's basketball team showed up at Ohio State's brand spanking new $105 million Schottenstein Center and played like their feet were stuck in cement that hadn't quite hardened. Led by junior point guard Scoonie Penn's 24 points and sophomore shooting guard Michael Redd's 19 (17 in the first half) points, the Buckeyes spanked the 17th-ranked Gophers 89-60 Saturday in Columbus. It was Ohio State's second straight game in which it (15-5, 5-2 in the Big Ten) trounced a top 25 opponent by 29 points they beat No. 16 Purdue 72-43 last Tuesday and the fourth win over a ranked opponent in January. The Buckeyes jumped out to a 21-5 lead before the first TV timeout, thanks to an array of dunks and three-pointers off of four Gophers turnovers. Right then and there, Ohio State maintenance workers could have started switching the multipurpose arena's basketball floor back to ice for Saturday night's Ohio State-Michigan hockey game, because the game was essentially over. Although Minnesota (12-4, 3-3) would eventually cut Ohio State's lead to 40-32 with 53 seconds left in the first half, the Buckeyes never had anything to worry about, except having to possibly replace the nets on their hoops.

Extractions: from those little radios" Like the weather, everybody complains about TV sports announcers, but nobody seems to do anything about it. All you have to do is turn on the radio. Not that the TV announcers who have been reporting the NCAA basketball games are actually bad (though some fans get all emotional over perceived slights of their favorite teams.) It's just that the games are so much more exciting on radio. Last Saturday, we caught two NCAA basketball tournament games on the radio, and both broadcasts filled the imagination. John Rooney handled the play-by-play of Connecticut's 67-62 West Region victory over Gonzaga, and his voice crackled with the tension in the air of the arena, going up and down with the noise of the crowd, baskets made and rebounds snared. Rooney called one dramatic three-point shot, chanting, "He fakes the three. Takes the three. HITS the three!" Minutes after the Connecticut victory in Phoenix, Ariz., the scene shifted to Knoxville, Tenn., and over the airwaves floated the familiar voice of Cincinnati Reds baseball announcer Marty Brennaman. But it wasn't word pictures of baseball Brennamen was painting, it was the South Region NCAA basketball final that finally went to Ohio State in a 77-74 thriller over St. Johns.

Extractions: COLUMN: Basketball lovers suffer uncontrollable urges to spout stats, give high-fives It starts with the twitching and shaking. It's that feeling that technology is your friend as you hug the TV and down one for the guy who came up with satellite television. It's the itch, the total obsession with free-throw percentage in the final two minutes of a game. It is March Madness. Many sports fans have become stricken with this disease. Its symptoms include nervous ticks developed from clicking the remote control too quickly and the urge for diaper dandies and super seniors alike to end every sentence with emphatic answers, baby! I know what you're thinking. "That's great and all. But how can I tell if I suffer from March Madness?" Well, the columnist is in, and I have devised a little test for all you out there suffering from college basketball fever. Think of it as March Madness (MM), Cosmo style. The first stage of MM is epitomized by behavior in public. When your TA asks you who the 15th president of the United States was, how do you answer? If you'd say James Buchanan, give yourself one point. If you feel the need to add, "He was awesome, baby! A real high riser!", give yourself three points. But if you follow that answer with: "Super, scintillating, sensational - he was the three-S man," and proceed to run around the classroom doling out high-fives, give yourself five points. The MM addict only cares about the euphoria of winning and isn't afraid to share it with others.
