Extractions: McDyess isn't a total loss Antonio McDyess Antonio McDyess' knee surgery probably cost the Knicks a playoff berth and postseason revenue. But McDyess' season-ending injury will save the Knicks some money. Under league rules, when the Knicks play their 41st game tomorrow against Dallas, the team will not be responsible for McDyess' entire 2002-03 salary. McDyess is scheduled to earn $12.6 million this season and as much as 80% is covered by insurance. McDyess could begin his rehabilitation next week but is not expected to play again this season. Extractions: DAILY NEWS SPORTS WRITER Hello, goodbye: Antonio McDyess is out for the season. McDyess (l.) is gone but Kurt Thomas (c.) and Shandon Anderson remain. The Antonio McDyess era in New York never even made it to opening night. The Knicks, coming off a season in which they failed to reach the playoffs for the first time in 15 years, suffered a devastating blow yesterday when it was announced that McDyess, the imported All-Star power forward, likely will miss the entire 2002-03 season with a fractured left kneecap. McDyess will get a second opinion from an independent doctor today, but team president Scott Layden confirmed that McDyess will probably undergo surgery on his patella for the second time in 12 months. Layden added that team doctors have assured him the injury is not career-threatening even though this latest injury marks the third time in 19 months the 6-9, 245-pound McDyess has damaged his patella. Layden's only comment concerning how long McDyess will be sidelined was "an extended period of time," which is corporate-speak for saying that the Knicks officially entered the LeBron James lottery yesterday.

The head-banging could be heard for miles in L.A., while Denver greeted the deal with unfettered enthusiasm. GM and coach Bernie Bickerstaff confirmed that Antonio was an impact player, perhaps of the caliber of a David Thompson. He boasted to reporters that the newest Nugget was one of the most physically gifted players to come out of college in years.
