Despite his 6-10 size, Manning is a natural small forward, possessing a wide array of skills. The son of Ed Manning, a former NBA and ABA player whose position as an assistant at the University of Kansas helped land his son at the school, Danny was a superstar for the Jayhawks. He averaged 23.9 points as a junior and 24.8 points and 9.0 rebounds as a senior. At the conclusion of his senior season he was named the Most Oustanding Player of the NCAA Tournament, as Kansas won the 1988 national title. That year he also earned national Player of the Year designations in at least five polls, and he was named a first-team All-American and the Big Eight Conference Player of the Year. He set more than three dozen school, conference and NCAA records and finished as the NCAA's sixth all-time leading scorer. Manning was also on the 1988 U.S. Olympic basketball team. The Los Angeles Clippers used the No. 1 overall pick of the 1988 NBA Draft to select Manning, who spent 5 seasons with the squad. In his first campaign in Los Angeles he injured the anterior cruciate ligament of his right knee and missed 56 games. He recovered, however, posting two fine seasons and then emerging as the team's top scorer for three seasons, 1991-92 through 1993-94. The 1992-93 campaign was his best, as he averaged 22.8 points, 10th in the league, and made the first of two consecutive trips to the NBA All-Star Game. The Clippers also earned playoff berths in both 1992 and 1993. During those years they were coached by Larry Brown, Manning's mentor at Kansas.
