Biography Of Barry Beckham His second novel, Runner Mack was published in 1972, and was followed by DoubleDunk, a novelized biography of Harlem basketball player, earl manigault. http://www.beckhamhouse.com/barry_beckham.html
Extractions: At age 25, Beckham published his first novel, My Main Mother in 1969, a month after his first published article appeared in Esquire. Begun in his senior year at Brown University, the novel describing a young black man's search for identity received widespread critical acclaim. A year later he was back at Brownon the faculty this time, where he remained for 17 years teaching creative writing and black literature. After teaching two years at Hampton University, Beckham retired in 1987 to become a free lance writer and book publisher. He began his portrait of the Chase Manhattan Bank in 1972 because he felt that he had a unique perspective on a landmark institution and the personalities that ran it. After college in 1966, he had accepted a scholarship to Columbia Law School in New York, but withdrew after two months. Looking for employment, he suddenly found himself on Wall Street, as a public relations writer for Chase Manhattan. There he established relationships with Chase's top executives, and he continued to stay in touch with them as he worked on the book "The coincidences were uncanny," he recalls.

Jim Evert By Tom Keating New York City - It was a Sunday afternoon with a healthy breeze blowing away the unhealthy air and I decided it was a good time to take in the legendary Rucker Professional Summer Basketball Tourney at Harlem. Magazine stories and even a few books have been written about the games held on the play grounds of Harlem and the Rucker Tourney is the pinnacle of this competition, pitting street stars known only in the neighborhoods against National Basketball Association stars. While asking a subway guard directions how to get from midtown Manhattan to 155th Street and Eighth Avenue, I was asked why. "Why?" I repeated.

The areas he focuses on primarily are the asphalt playgrounds of Harlem and Bedford Stuyvesant. There basketball has its special code of behavior, its pecking order and its own culture heroes. . . . Extractions: ick-up, playground basketball is one of New York's great traditions. NBA stars like Stephon Marbury have honed their game on the city's blacktop courts, as have legends of more local renown, such as Earl "The Goat" Manigault and Joe "The Destroyer" Hammond. If it's sunny, you'll find pick-up games at many city parks and playgrounds. Some of the best full-court games include Riverside Park (courts can be found at 76th, 96th and 110th Sts.), Central Park (just north of the Great Lawn), Asphalt Green (York Ave. between 91st and 92nd Sts.), the 96th Street Playground (96th St. between First Ave. and the FDR Dr.), and the courts at 37th Street and Second Avenue. Just show up and ask "Who's got winners?" Advertisement The West 4th Street courts (at Sixth Ave.) have been seen in more basketball-related commercials than Michael Jordan. It's always a mob scene, making it all but impossible to just walk on. Nevertheless, these courts host frequent tournaments that feature some of the city's best street talent. You may get lucky and spot a former NBA star posting up hapless opponents. In the winter or at night, it's tougher to find a pick-up game. Your best bet is

Extractions: Photos by: Shem Rajoon On a hot, sunny day, we were invited to the All-Star Ruckers game by Rucker clothes line promoter Ron Stewart. At the All-Star game there was a slam dunk and a three point shooting contest at Rucker Park on 155th sreet and 8th Ave. Over two hundred people came to cheer on the young contestants. Security was tight throughout the park. The security company used was "Up and Arms Security" who also worked for a spy shop run in Brooklyn, "Tec-One" spy shop. The store is found in the Brooklyn Mall and has been there for about a year and a half. The Up and Arms Security has worked for Rucker since 1994-1995. For the Slam dunk contest, a contestant named Hollywood, did cart wheels then slam dunk the ball into the net. Another contestant named Smiley, did various Slam dunk stunts. He and Hollywood were the best contestants. Hollywood had a hard time getting the ball into the net, but he kept trying . You could tell he did a lot of practicing. In the end, Smiley came in first place and Hollywood came in second. Smiley was not availible for an interview. Hollywood and Smiley both won Black and Silver Rucker gear. But it was the first place Rucker winner, Smiley, who won a year's worth of Rucker gear in black and silver, colors only worn by family and close friends.
