Extractions: Denver Post Sports Writer Jan. 2 - In that millennium mood, the folks who run NBA.com asked fans to vote on lots of bests, including the best international player of the decade. One little problem: They forgot to put Hakeem Olajuwon on the ballot. No explanation for this, according to Barry Rubinstein, who edits the league's release on the results. So pay no attention to the list, which is led by Dikembe Mutombo and includes Luc Longley in sixth place. We at The Post are pretty sure Olajuwon is better than both of them ... With a victory over the Suns on Monday, the Jazz snapped a two-game losing streak. It hasn't lost three in a row since Jan. 6-11, 1997, a span of 206 games ... Conspiracy theorists, take note: Rockets assistant coaches no longer write game plans and scouting reports on grease boards clearly visible to locker room visitors, a practice customary for all 29 teams for years. You know, things like "always drives to his left" or "can't get over the top of screens." The reason: a league-wide rumor that some teams were sending ballboys into the visiting locker rooms with instructions to bring juicy tidbits back to the home team. "We heard the rumor last season," Rockets assistant coach Jim Boylen said. "We heard the visiting locker room ballboys were bringing information to the home team. I don't know if it's true, but we didn't want to find out." ... Nobody can accuse Shaquille O'Neal of being cheap. Lakers drew names for a gift exchange, just like back in grade school. Extractions: Paul Graham Named WSU Men's Basketball Coach Former Oklahoma State assistant becomes Cougars' 14th head coach. March 25, 1999 PULLMAN, Wash. - Paul Graham was introduced as Washington State University men's basketball coach by WSU Athletic Director Rick Dickson at a press conference Thursday afternoon on the Pullman campus. Graham becomes the 14th head coach in the 98-year history of Cougar basketball. He replaces Kevin Eastman, who resigned on March 10, after five seasons at WSU. "In Paul Graham, I believe we have found the person who is the absolute best fit for WSU," said Dickson. "He is highly respected both in coaching circles and in the Stillwater community. From a coaching standpoint, Paul brings a high quality in both recruiting and leadership. He has had the opportunity to learn from two of the best game coaches in the country in Eddie Sutton and Dave Bliss. From a community standpoint, Paul brings strong morals and family values. I know Paul and his family will be wonderful additions to the Pullman community." Sutton, who has been at OSU for nine years, echoed Dickson's sentiments. "Paul is a great family man and is a good role model for his players," he said. "He has a philosophy that student-athletes should be treated just like you would treat your own children. He is a good teacher and has a wonderful knowledge of the game. I hate to lose Paul, but I'm excited for him and Washington State University. It is a good fit."

Also attending the breakfast will be Professor John Bloomfield, the man whose report into sport in the early 1970s provided the blueprint for the AIS to eventually be established after a poor performance at the 1976 Montreal Olympics. Longley (1986-87) was a member of the AIS mens basketball residential program in Canberra, while Hawkes (1986-2000) was based in Perth with the womens hockey program. The pair was among the AIS 21 best of the best announced in Canberra last month a group that included former Wallaby captain and now ASC Board Member John Eales, marathon runner Robert de Castella, and swimmer Michael Klim. Longley, 33 said the AIS prepared him for basketball at the elite level. Training alongside so many top quality athletes under the guidance of the best coaches was an inspiration, Longley said.

Extractions: Over the past few years, basketball has been one of the fastest growing sports. It's fast, exciting, fun and exhausting! You can play 'one on one' or a full court competition. All you need is a ball, a basketball hoop and backboard, a court and lots of energy. In a normal game of basketball, you have 5 players each side; 2 guards, 2 forwards and a centre. You may have heard of specialist positions such as a 'point guard'. This usually occurs is the higher levels of competition and if you're just starting out, ask your coach or teacher which position they think you might be best suited for. The aim of basketball is to get the ball down to your end of the court and shoot a basket to score points. A field shot is worth 2 points if shot within the 3 point line, and obviously worth 3 points if shot outside the 3 point line. You must bounce the ball in your journey down the court and if you stop bouncing it, you either have to pass to one of your team mates or take a shot. Most of the passes used in basketball are chest passes and bounce passes. You can't run outside the lines of the court, you have to get the ball over half way within ten seconds and once you go over half way, you can't go back. Once in your half, your team has 30 seconds in which to weave around the defence to get good positioning and shoot.

Extractions: LUC LONGLEY: A Footnote in NBA History On September 27, 2001 the greatest basketball player ever announced he was coming back for the second time. His return is the subject of much debate. It dominated the headlines. That player, of course, is Michael Jordan. On that same date one of the players that most benefited from Jordan's first comeback retired. His retirement did not generate much discussion. It received minimal media coverage. That player is Luc Longley. No, Luc Longley will not be enshrined in the Basketball Hall of Fame, nor does he deserve a glorious send off. He did, however, prove one thing - sometimes nice guys do finsish first. A high school student in the early 90s, I got a chance to know a young Luc Longley during his rookie season with the Timberwolves. He was the teams' first round draft pick (7th Overall) in the 1991 Draft. Since the Wolves drafted a center, Felton Spencer, a year earlier Luc's selection was not popular with the fans. When Longley's hold out lasted into the beginning of the season his popularity was damaged further. Once he signed with the team all of the boos began to fade. It wasn't his play that won them over, it was his down-to-earth personality and 'no worries' attitude that made him a fan favorite. The boos turned to 'Luuuuuucs.' I got to know Luc after drawing a portrait and giving it to him. After the game he offered to take a my friend, Jason, and I back to the lockeroom and give us some shoes. The security guard wouldn't allow us in, but Luc quickly returned with a pair of size 15.5 Nikes and a warm up shirt for each of us. A friendship was born. Luc supplied us with free tickets for the rest of the year, and even took us out for dinner a couple times. We even stopped by his loft apartment in Minneapolis' trendy warehouse district to shoot some pool.

The Australian center joined the Knicks from Phoenix on Sept. 20, 2000 as part of the four-team trade that sent Patrick Ewing to Seattle. But Longley opened his 10th NBA season on the bench recovering from a knee injury he incurred as a member of the host Australian Olympic team at the 2000 Sydney Games. Longley became the first Australian to play in the NBA when the Timberwolves drafted him with the seventh pick out of the University of New Mexico in 1991. The Melbourne native spent two and a half seasons in Minnesota before being traded to the Bulls in February 1994. In Chicago, Longley found his niche as a key piece of the Bulls' second three-peat. He started every game for those three championship teams, averaging 9.6 points and 5.5 rebounds during that time. The Bulls then traded Longley to Phoenix before the 1998-99 season. He spent two years with the Suns, averaging 7.1 points and 4.9 rebounds and last season, he made his seventh consecutive playoff appearance in helping Phoenix advance to the second round. Longley's Olympic experience this past summer was his third, after participating as a member of the Australian team in 1988 and 1992 before missing the 1996 Games with an ankle injury. This season with the Knicks, Longley has played in 25 games and made two starts. Here are Longley's responses to a selection of fan e-mail:
The Knicks: Can They Get Any Worse? - Basketball What do they have? Getting rid of Ewing was good, but the Knicks acquiredLuc longley, Travis Knight, and Glen Rice for their former star. http://www.freshangles.com/thezone/basketball/articles/40.html
Extractions: Madison Square Garden has always been dear to New York Knicks fans. A person attends a game with enthusiasm, anxious to cheer your Knickerbockers on. For the past season, however, a different tone has set in. The games are still sold out, but the Knicks fans seem to be waiting. Waiting for a win. Waiting for the Knicks to become again what they once used to be. There are a few reasons, which might add up to why the Knicks are doing as bad as they are doing, with a 14-22 record. Ever since Van Gundy left, Chaney has coached the team to a 4-13 record I wouldn't want that roster. The glut at the point guards. The small forwards are small. There's no real, true inside presence no matter what. What do they have? Every team has a star, a go-to-guy who you can count on down the stretch and in the clutching minutes of a game. The Knicks simply do not have one. Face it, Patrick Ewing just got too old and unhealthy to deal with. The Knicks had to trade him. Ewing used to be our star. Then, the Knicks acquired Latrell Sprewell in 1999, looking for an answer. It seemed as though they had found their man. That year, Spree, Marcus Camby, and Allan Houston led the Knicks to the NBA Finals. After that, everything seemed to go downhill. Their record kept getting worse and worse. Now it is at the point where a Knicks fan might feel embarrassed to where his/her jersey out in the public. They are just humiliating. The Knicks have to get a star. They need their share of players such as Allen Iverson, Kobe Bryant, and Tracy McGrady. The only question is when and how.

Extractions: Center Luc Longley , acquired by the Knicks on Sept. 21 in a four-team trade for Patrick Ewing , is out for 8-to-10 weeks because of torn knee ligaments, ESPN's David Aldrdige reported Saturday. Longley Longley sustained the injury while playing for the Australian Olympic team against France on Friday in Sydney, Australia. France stunned Australia 76-52 to advance to its first gold medal game in 52 years. Longley, who played for the Phoenix Suns the past two seasons, received an MRI on Saturday that showed the damage. He will not need surgery but will be out of action while rehabilitating the knee. The Knicks open training camp Monday and their first preseason game is Oct. 10; they open the regular season Oct. 31. If Longley misses exactly eight weeks, his first game would be the Knicks' 15th of the regular season Nov. 27 vs. Vancouver.
