Extractions: CLIFF McBRIDE/Tribune photo Duke is not the greatest team in the history of college basketball. The reason for that - here's the Blue Devils' cursed consolation - is because of a loss in one of the greatest, maybe the greatest, championship game in the history of the NCAA Tournament. Third-ranked Connecticut's 77-74 victory Monday night at a juiced-up Tropicana Field, in front of 41,340, derailed top- ranked Duke and all of its dreams, which had grown exponentially as this season progressed. Victories had become formalities. Winning the national title had become almost a given. Given that, upstart UConn (34-2) took the title. The Huskies were led by forward Richard Hamilton, who scored 27 points and was selected the tournament's Most Outstanding Player. UConn held Duke to a season-low shooting percentage of 41.1, ending Duke's school-record victory streak at 32, keeping the Blue Devils (37-2) from setting an NCAA mark for single-season victories. ``We're happy as heck but we're not shocked; we're 34-2 and the only times we've lost is when we haven't been whole [due to injuries],'' UConn coach Jim Calhoun said.

Extractions: Tiger's Tom Wideman and Duke's Trajan Langdon both earn prestigous postgraduate scholarships. February 17, 1999 CLEMSON, S.C. - Saturday's game between Duke and Clemson will be the first meeting on the hardcourt of two Atlantic Coast Conference Weaver-James-Corrigan Postgraduate Scholarship Recipients. Earlier this week, Clemson's Tom Wideman and Duke's Trajan Langdon were two of the 16 ACC scholar athletes to win the awards. This is the first time two men's basketball players have been honored in the same year, so obviously, this will be the first ACC game in which two recipients have played in the same contest. Wideman was one of three Clemson student-athletes to win the postgraduate scholarship, as announced by ACC Commissioner John Swofford. Clemson men's swimmer Will York and women's swimmer Jennifer Mihalik were also honored. Clemson, Maryland and NC State all led the conference with three selections apiece. Wideman was to make his 100th career start on the hardcourt for the Tigers against Virginia on Wednesday evening. He is currently Clemson's third leading scorer (7.1) and #2 rebounder (6.7. He is also second on the team in field goal percentage (.543) and steals (29). He is 12th in Clemson history in career rebounding (641) and is currently 8th in the ACC in rebounds per game for this season.

Extractions: Dec. 10, 1997 DURHAM, N.C. (AP) - Elton Brand scored 15 points, blocked four shots and had six rebounds, and top-ranked Duke turned 19 turnovers into 21 points in a 94-66 win over Villanova Wednesday night. Chris Carrawell added 13 points for Duke (9-0), while Roshown McLeod had 12 and Mike Chappell and Trajan Langdon 11 each. Malik Allen scored 17 and Howard Brown added 14 for Villanova (2-3). The Blue Devils, who came into the game forcing an average of 26 turnovers and 15 steals per contest, used their trapping full-court defense to generated 14 Wildcat turnovers in the first half. Duke converted those turnovers into 17 points, including three breakaway dunks, and stormed out to an early double-figure lead which it never relinquished. The Wildcats shot just 37 percent (26-of-71), while Duke hit 54 percent (37-of-68) of its field goals. Villanova trailed by 26 at halftime and got no closer than 24 in the second half. Duke had 10 steals and 13 blocked shots in the game.

September 11, 1998 Card Gym 3-4:00 PM Friday is the only day I don't have a lab, recitation, or something else to do around three, so today was the first time I was able to see the basketball team at Card Gym. I was hoping I could see Grant, Jamison, or Carter but the only NBA'er was Shammond Williams, and he didn't even play. Oh well. I was raised on Duke basketball, so just watching the team scrimmage is still a great fix for my basketball withdrawal. Here's what I saw: Battier: Shane was really stroking his jump shot all afternoon. It really seems like it's part of his game right now. He was also finishing a lot of the breaks with power. He didn't necessarily dunk it every time, but he was often fouled or scored on a lay-up. It looked like he worked hard in the off-season and I can't wait to see him on the offensive this year! Langdon: Trajan was simply Trajan, hitting the three, rolling off picks for the shot and stroking the spot up jumper. Often times, he was the one bringing the ball up and distributing. He looked comfortable at the point.
Nick's Corner - UConn Vs. Duke - A Game For The Ages UConn had reached the summit of college basketball! Duke's bright spotin defeat was their fifthyear senior guard trajan langdon. http://pages.cthome.net/nkcorner/uconn.html
Extractions: I have been a sports fan for about 25 years, sometimes casual and sometimes diehard, and a fan of UConn basketball for nearly the same length of time. My father took me to my first UConn game in 1981, and after that I gradually developed more and more of an interest in UConn and college basketball. Over the years I have seen many games on TV and in person (and had season tickets while I attended UConn), so I, like other UConn fans, have witnessed the evolution of their basketball program from a Big East cellar-dweller to a national power. From the NIT title in '88, through the '90 Dream Season, through all the Big East titles and disappointing tournament exits of the 1990s, there have been many highs and lows. But in 1999, UConn silenced all its doubters and officially arrived as a recognized top-notch program. This was culminated by not just getting to their first Final Four, but by defeating Duke 77-74 to win their first national championship. UConn had reached the summit of college basketball! For all us longtime UConn fans, it was our finest moment!
