Extractions: "As you know, we went into this draft without a first-round draft pick, with only the 37th pick. But we acquired, last year, multiple first-round picks with the moves we made. And the purpose of getting those picks was to acquire assets so that we would be able to acquire talent one way or another - trade, using those picks combined or individually, to acquire some players. We worked hard approaching this draft to target some players. Dan Dickau was one of the players that we had targeted. We started working probably around the 18th pick and by the time it became a real possibility to acquire a pick with the 28th pick. Lucky he didn't slip much futher, for Dan's sake and for our sake. He probably wasn't going to be available if he fell below 28."

Extractions: in 1988. I know I'm getting old because I find myself watching ESPN Classic Sports. Just the other day, there was the Cavs-Bulls game from May 7, 1989. Yes, The Shot. And yes, I knew it was coming, but I watched it all the way to the end, anyway, waiting for Michael Jordan to hang in the air for an eternity as he swished the shot, breaking 20,000 hearts at the old Richfield Coliseum. I was covering the Cavs full time for the Akron Beacon Journal back then, and my press table seat was right next to the Cavs bench. I could lean over and talk to trainer Gary Briggs. Coach Lenny Wilkens sat no more than 5 feet away. After that game, I still remember Wilkens looking as if he'd just come back from a long road trip, arrived at his house (and discovered it had been reduced to ashes). His face was gray. His upper lip was a straight line. His teeth seemed to be biting through his bottom lip. Anyone who says Wilkens didn't take losses hard simply fails to understand that we all suffer in different ways. Some people lash out at the world, blaming everyone. Wilkens took it inside, asking himself what else he could have done.

Extractions: Junior college players were perceived by many observers for an extended period as the rogues of recruiting. But now they are in vogue throughout the vast majority of major four-year universities because of an improved image amid the advent of stiffer academic requirements for Division I freshman eligibility. Although many tunnel-vision Division I coaches were once standoffish, it seems as if virtually everyone except Ivy League schools are flocking toward J.C. recruits these days, especially after "juco" signees frequented the rosters of recent Final Four teamsArkansas (1990, 1994 and 1995), Cincinnati (1992), Indiana (1987), Kansas (1988, 1991 and 1993), Kentucky (1993), Mississippi State (1996), Oklahoma (1988), Oklahoma State (1995), Syracuse (1996) and UNLV (1987, 1990 and 1991). For instance, five of Cincinnati's nine regulars in 1992 were former junior college players. It wasn't too long ago when only a splinter group of maverick coaches were bold enough to liberally dot their rosters with J.C. players stereotyped as discipline problems, academic risks or simply unsuitable to go directly from high school to major college programs. "Jucoland" was labeled by misguided observers as little more than basketball rehabilitation where free-lance players enjoyed free rein to make Great Plains arenas their own personal H-O-R-S-E stables.

Extractions: Jordan says goodbye after collecting five regular-season MVP trophies and six Finals MVP awards. Related Content: Michael Jordan retirement index Not much can be written about Michael Jordan that has not already been said in one way or another, in languages from Chinese to Slovak. His accomplishments on the basketball court defy description and imitation, and his skills drew the respect and admiration of both fans and those who really weren't interested in sports. He was the idol of most of the younger players in the NBA today, many of whom credit Jordan with inspiring them to excel at the sport. His impact on the sport cannot be measured, yet he was and is so much more than just a sports star; he is a cultural icon. And now, once again, it's time to say farewell. "I've accomplished everything I could as an individual," he said. "I don't have the mental challenge to proceed as I have in the past." It was hard enough to say goodbye the first time. In October 1993, Jordan decided to retire to pursue a longtime dream of playing professional baseball. We were all sad then, wringing our hands and lamenting about the prospect of Life After Michael. But he was still so young, with additional tangible basketball goals within his grasp, that many predicted he would return. And he did, to conclude a fantastic career with a final act that in many ways was greater than those proceeding it.
