Extractions: 11/15/99- Updated 12:13 PM ET Everywhere he went, every time his famous hands gripped a basketball, Michael Jordan left memories behind. With Jordan expected to retire from the NBA on Wednesday after 13 seasons as the greatest player in the game, opponents, coaches and teammates took time to remember what he meant to the sport and wonder whether they would ever see the likes of him again. ''The NBA, the fans, the players, the coaches, American society and history are losing the greatest influence that sports has ever had,'' said Miami Heat coach Pat Riley, whose teams had some epic battles with Jordan. Larry Bird, the Indiana Pacers coach and an old Jordan nemesis on the Boston Celtics, said it was ''sad for everyone to see the greatest basketball player in the world'' retire. ''There comes a time in every player's career that they have to make that decision, and he feels it's his time,'' he said. Jordan's Chicago Bulls teammates remember the incredible competitiveness that drove him and how he made them believe he could take them anywhere. He almost always did, winning six NBA championships and 10 scoring titles.

Extractions: 11/15/99- Updated 12:13 PM ET For a true perspective on Michael Jordan's greatness, perhaps it is best to begin with those he loved to beat. It's a long list, filled with Hall of Famers, brilliant coaches and helpless defenders who learned the hard way that Jordan was simply the best. Joe Dumars, Larry Bird and Pat Riley. Craig Ehlo, Gerald Wilkins and Bryon Russell. Lenny Wilkens tried in vain to stop him. In the end, only Jordan could do that. With Jordan expected to retire today after 13 seasons as the greatest player in the game, opponents, coaches and teammates took time to remember what he meant to the sport - and wonder whether they would ever see the likes of him again. ''The greatest basketball player who ever lived is now retiring, and there's no replacement for Michael Jordan,'' said Dumars, whose ''Bad Boy'' Detroit Pistons unwittingly encouraged Jordan to the greatness that defines him. ''I don't see anyone replacing him. No one should try.'' His influence reached far beyond basketball, a graceful game that he changed, mastered and transcended.

The Eagles officially open the season next Friday (Nov. 15) versus host Wisconsin at the NABC Classic in Madison, Wisc. Last week, Eastern defeated Northwest Sports 117-73 in another exhibition game. Eastern led just 41-31 at halftime, but then went on a 15-2 run mid-way through the second half to break the game open. The Eagles led by 27 at that point, then took their biggest lead of the night at 90-59 with 4:29 to play. "We got off to a slow start, but we played good defense,"

Extractions: After 44-point blowout, Eagles close exhibition season versus a NBC Thunder squad they beat by just two last year This time around, the Eastern Washington University men's basketball team expects to have a battle on its hands. The Eagles play their final exhibition game Thursday (Nov. 7) when NBC Thunder visits Reese Court. Tipoff is 7:05 p.m. at Reese Court in Cheney, and there is no charge to attend. The Eagles enter the game ranked 10th nationally in the pre-season ESPN.com Mid-Major Top 10 rankings. Gonzaga, Easterns opponent on Dec. 22, is No. 1. Last week, the Eagles cruised past Northwest Sports 117-73 as four Eagles scored at least 16 points. There might be lots of offense produced Thursday, but the 44-point margin isn't expected. Last year, Eastern edged the Thunder by a slim 108-106 margin. NBC Thunder opened its seven-game schedule by losing at North Idaho College 102-80 last week. Tyrone McDaniel, who scored 33 points and had five steals versus the Eagles a year ago, is currently playing professionally in Mexico and won't be with the team. However, former NBA and Washington State University star Craig Ehlo is on the team's roster. The squad also includes former Pepperdine standout Shann Ferch, who scored 16 points a year against the Eagles, and Nick Temen from Georgia who scored 14 last year.

However, just about everybody not named Jim Paxson or Gordon Gund was caught by surprise when the Cleveland Cavaliers fired John Lucas last week with one year remaining on Lucas' contract. The Cavaliers have been in a constant state of rebuilding and dismantling and trying to rebuild again, ever since the salad days of Brad Daugherty and Craig Ehlo in the late 1980s and early '90s. The latest version of the Cavaliers traded promising point guard Andre Miller to the Los Angeles Clippers for Darius Miles, in part because Miller is not a player who sells tickets, and he wants to be paid like one. Paxson also traded away Wesley Person to Memphis and got little in return, and Lamond Murray, last season's leading scorer, to Toronto in return for Michael "Yogi" Stewart, a player who has not gotten off the bench since Bill Clinton was in the White House.

Junior college Junior college players were perceived by many observers for an extended period as the rogues of recruiting. But now they are in vogue throughout the vast majority of major four-year universities because of an improved image amid the advent of stiffer academic requirements for Division I freshman eligibility. Although many tunnel-vision Division I coaches were once standoffish, it seems as if virtually everyone except Ivy League schools are flocking toward J.C. recruits these days, especially after "juco" signees frequented the rosters of recent Final Four teamsArkansas (1990, 1994 and 1995), Cincinnati (1992), Indiana (1987), Kansas (1988, 1991 and 1993), Kentucky (1993), Mississippi State (1996), Oklahoma (1988), Oklahoma State (1995), Syracuse (1996) and UNLV (1987, 1990 and 1991). For instance, five of Cincinnati's nine regulars in 1992 were former junior college players. It wasn't too long ago when only a splinter group of maverick coaches were bold enough to liberally dot their rosters with J.C. players stereotyped as discipline problems, academic risks or simply unsuitable to go directly from high school to major college programs. "Jucoland" was labeled by misguided observers as little more than basketball rehabilitation where free-lance players enjoyed free rein to make Great Plains arenas their own personal H-O-R-S-E stables.

Extractions: By Craig Sanders Arizona Daily Wildcat Arizona basketball coach Lute Olson had stars in his eyes last night as he watched Arizona's own version of the "Dream Team" beat a team of NBA players in a charity basketball game at McKale Center. The Wildcats came away with a 130-120 victory in the Wildcat Dream Invitational. The game featured 10 former Wildcats, primarily from the past decade, who have gone on to play in the NBA. The Wildcats' opponents, the Daydreams, were led by such NBA notables as Dan Majerle of the Phoenix Suns and Craig Ehlo of the Atlanta Hawks. The game itself was a Wildcat fan's fantasy a starting lineup of Khalid Reeves, Steve Kerr, Brian Williams, Sean Rooks and Jud Buechler and a bench made up of Sean Elliott, Anthony Cook, Matt Othick, Tom Tolbert and Arizona's second all-time leading scorer, Bob Elliott (no relation to Sean). Two of the Wildcats' most notable players, Damon Stoudamire and Chris Mills, did not play in the game. Stoudamire is without a contract and did not want to risk injury and Mills was unable to attend because of prior obligations. Former All-American Sean Elliott, who is also without a contract, played only one minute and 20 seconds because an injury would jeopardize the chance of a long-term contract, which he is trying to negotiate with the Spurs. He hit a three-point basket with about 39 seconds left in the first half.
