Extractions: Two Years Of College For NBA(April 8,1998) Is there no end to the number of kids who will declare early for the NBA? First it's Paul Pierce of Kansas. Then Korleone Young, who's never played a day of college ball in his life. Even Corey Hightower of Mt. Zion is hinting about the NBA. Now there's another college player, and a SoCal player no less, from Oregon State who has declared. Corey Benjamin (6'-6" So. G) who averaged 19.8 points and five rebounds this last season at Oregon State, said Wednesday he will also pass up his final two collegiate seasons to make himself available for the NBA draft. The announcement was made by Benjamin from Fontana High, his alma mater, where he averaged 27.6 points and 11.5 rebounds in his senior year. Benjamin, 20, averaged 17.5 points in two seasons at Oregon State, scoring 30 or more points in six games. He ranked among the Pacific-10 Conference's top 10 in steals and field goal percentage, and was one of four players in the league to lead his team in scoring and rebounding. "Corey's early entry in the NBA draft is a dream come true for him and his family, and I certainly wish him the best," Oregon State coach Eddie Payne said in a statement issued by the school. "Corey contributed greatly to the excitement of basketball at Oregon State. He is one of the most talented and gifted student-athletes I have ever been around. Corey needs to work on certain aspects of his game, but that is the case for every player at any level. I'm very happy for him, and I want to thank him for his efforts at Oregon State."

Extractions: to OSU 91 to 79(November 20, 1997) CSUN suffered it's second defeat by a Pac-10 school after losing Sunday to Arizona State; tonight they lost to a very good OSU team, which is, by most accounts underrated in most polls. They're really a lot better than most people think, and should finish above 7th in the Pac-10; maybe not much above that. . .ok, maybe only 6th. . .and then only if they get lucky. But tonight they didn't have much trouble disposing of Bobby Braswell's Matadors. This was not an especially pretty game: There was an astounding total of of 63 turnovers, 32 by Northridge, and 31 by OSU. Northridge tried to run it's fast break, but was plagued by terrible shooting. CSUN shot only 39% from the field compare to OSU's 55%. CSUN was led by Greg Minor (6'-3" So. G, Canyon Country) with 27 points, but who only made 8 of 19 from the field, but shot a stellar 4 out of 5 on his three-point attempts. This game had a major SoCal-Oregon flavor to it: Every single player on the CSUN roster is from SoCal with the single exception of standout 6'-9" center Brian Heinle, who is from Eugene, Oregon. On the OSU side, there is a major California contingent, with many from SoCal:
