Extractions: Avalanche-Journal When you have a hole left by a player who was drafted fifth in the National Basketball Association draft, it's only natural to overlook what other gaps might exist. Undoubtedly, the main challenge facing the Texas Tech men's basketball team this season will be finding a way to fill the void left by All-Big 12 center Tony Battie and his 18.8 points and conference-best 11.8 rebounds a game. But the Red Raiders also lost a valuable post player in Gionet Cooper, who was third in the conference with 8.6 rebounds a game from the power forward position. That throws sophomore Cliff Owens into an important role this season, and the 6-foot-8 245-pound forward appears ready to accept the challenge. "I got just enough experience under my belt last year to make me very hungry coming into this season," said Owens, who averaged just over 7 minutes a game in his rookie season. "I need to concentrate on rebounding because we lost 21 boards a game from last year, but I also very real confident I can score down low. With the guys we have on the perimeter, teams aren't going to be able to double down inside like they did on Tony last year, and I think the coaches are definitely looking for me to provide some frontcourt scoring." Tech will also be looking for Owens to bridge the gap between the start of the season and the second semester when 6-7 senior forward Da'Mon Roberts is expected to return after missing the first part of the season with academic problems. Roberts is the Raiders' most experienced interior player, and should have a shot at stepping into the starting lineup when he returns. But that doesn't mean Owens will be ready to simply step aside.

Extractions: Avalanche-Journal Center Tony Battie and guard Cory Carr, Texas Tech's two most productive basketball players this season, were recognized for their efforts Monday when the first two All-Big 12 Conference teams were announced. Battie was a first-team pick on both the coaches' and Associated Press teams, and Carr was named to the second team on both squads. Battie, a 6-foot-11 junior from Dallas, is the only player in the Big 12 who averaged doubles figures in points and rebounds during the regular season. He finished as the league's fifth-leading scorer at 19 points per game and leading rebounder at 12 rebounds per game. He also shot 57 percent from the floor, third-best in the Big 12, and was fourth in blocked shots with an average of 2.4 per game. ''It is an honor,'' Battie said. ''But I couldn't do it without the help of my teammates and my coaches, especially Will Flemons, and Stan Bonewitz. Stan does a great job picking up what the defense is doing and how it leaves me open. ''I also have to credit Cliff Owens, Ross Carmichael and Da'Mon Roberts for pushing me hard every day in practice. Brock Barnes does a good job player-coaching from the bench. I credit all those guys for any honors I'm chosen for.''
