And since his days in crib and cradle, he has been known as Rick Barry's son. Now, Brent Barry is trying to make a name for himself. The 6-foot-6, 185-pound Barry has made believers of coaches, fans and media with his flair and steady hand in the first two weeks of his NBA career. In his first nine games with the Clippers the last six as their starting point guard Barry averaged 10.2 points and 3.8 assists. He shot .515 from the field and .567 from 3-point range, leading the league in the latter category through last weekend. Thanks in no small part to Barry, the perennially enigmatic Clippers won six of their first nine games, the team's best start since 1975-76, when the franchise was still in Buffalo. Barry played point guard and small forward at Oregon State but spent most of his time at two-guard, and coach Bill Fitch planned to use him at both spots in the backcourt this season. That was until starting point man Pooh Richardson went down with a stress fracture of an ankle. Through the first three games of the regular season, Fitch started veteran Terry Dehere. Then he handed the keys to Barry and said, "Drive this baby with care, kid."

Extractions: To my dismay, I failed to look far enough into the future to anticipate my demise. I didn't realize that the last two match-ups in the playoffs would be two-week periods, so I'm left holding the bag for the next seven days with a roster full of bench warmers. This, ladies and gentlemen, is why you should pay attention to league rules. I didn't, and now I have perhaps my weakest schedule of the year against a relatively strong schedule for my opponent. Compounding the problem was both my lack of FAAB money in the last few weeks to pick up valuable players, and the absolutely bone-headed move of forgetting to even submit free agent requests this last time. I plead some degree of innocence on the basis of preoccupation with the burgeoning baseball season, but I still screwed up. That means after basking in the lucky glow that led a fantasy basketball rookie to the title game, in all likelihood I have to watch my team wilt as it reaches the finish line.
