Remember the Steve Sax Syndrome? The term was coined when the Los Angeles Dodger could no longer throw the ball to first with any degree of accuracy quite a problem for a second baseman. Vin Bakers free throws uh, make that lack of land him at the top of the list of fizzlers. (Allsport) Baker missed the first 14 free throws he took this season. Not just a couple, or a few, or even a dozen ... fourteen in a row without finding the bottom of the net. Through the Sonics first four games, Baker missed every free throw he took quite a problem for a guy who makes his living scoring against the brutes of the NBA and certainly not the best way for a four-time All-Star to start an abbreviated season in the final year of his contract. The most perplexing thing about Baker's woes is that he used to be an adequate free-throw shooter, connecting at a 62-percent clip during his five years in the league. He wasn't Mark Price, but he wasn't Greg Ostertag, either. All of the sudden, Baker might be calling Shaquille O'Neal for tips. Maybe somebody should have seen this coming. Baker had the best free-throw shooting season of his career in 1996-97, making good on 69 percent of his chances. Those numbers fell off considerably last season (59 percent), but really took a southward turn in the playoffs, with Baker finishing 16-for-38 42 percent.
