Extractions: Leaning into a pulpit, a beautiful and sensuous black woman, wearing a long, flowing gown, has moved within six inches or so of a distinguished Caucasian man behind the lectern. She is smiling, and her gleaming teeth flash pleasure. The man, white-haired, older, his tuxedoed chest and shoulders garlanded by a lei of flowers, is turning toward her with a smile of shy but burgeoning satisfaction. Just above the pulpit, her dark, left hand grasps the pale fingers of his right hand. With the possible exception of Marjorie Hinckley, is there another woman in The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, or for that matter the world, who would so confidently and comfortably intrude on the personal space of 90-year-old Church president Gordon Bitner Hinckley, and so naturally induce him to enjoy it? Not likely. For this man, held by Church members to be prophet, seer, and revelator, it was a moment of unusual personal intensity and, yes, perhaps, revelation'. It occurred during his public birthday celebration before a huge throng in the new

Extractions: MINNEAPOLIS - Coaches love to squirm about having to play a team three times in one season. So, what about four? That's what Mike Krzyzewski and Gary Williams face Saturday in the Final Four semifinal nightcap at the Metrodome, when Duke and Maryland meet for an uncommon fourth time in a season. The last time ACC teams played a fourth time in one season came in the 1983 NCAA Tournament. It was a game that today wouldn't be scheduled where it was in the bracket. It was a 63-62 game that ended on missed shots by Tim Mullen and Othell Wilson, a game that finished Ralph Sampson's storied career at Virginia, a game that sent the late Jim Valvano toward his endlessly replayed Albuquerque "Dash to Destiny" after North Carolina State won the national championship. This UVa -State game was different. It was in Ogden, Utah, in the West Regional final.

Extractions: Click here to get the Daily Briefing in your inbox 03/05/2002 - Updated 08:09 PM ET All-time Final Four all-tournament teams In 1993, Michigan forward Chris Webber became the fourth player to secure NCAA All-Tournament team status in back-to-back seasons without winning a national championship either year. The first three players to fall into this undesirable category were Iowa forward Carl Cain (1955 and 1956), Cincinnati forward Oscar Robertson (1959 and 1960) and Houston center Hakeem Olajuwon (1983 and 1984). UNLV guard Freddie Banks, Houston forward Elvin Hayes and Penn forward Tony Price are three players to wonder what they needed to do to earn a spot on an All-Tournament team. Banks scored more points than any player in a Final Four game without being selected to the All-Tournament team (38 in a 97-93 defeat in the 1987 national semifinals against eventual champion Indiana). Hayes led the 1968 tournament in scoring (167 points) and rebounding (97 rebounds) by wide margins for the fourth-place Cougars. Excluding Hayes, Price is the highest scorer in a tourney for a Final Four team to fail to be named All-Tournament (led 1979 playoffs with 142 points for the fourth-place Quakers).

Extractions: I'm showing the girls a 10 minute clip of the Thurl Bailey Fireside (it's 90 minutes long), which I taped from BYUTV on DISH Network. He played NBA basketball for the Utah Jazz and other teams. In 1996 he joined the Church and has been generously sharing his testimony at Sunday night youth and adult firesides ever since. Not only is he an amazingly talented athlete, he is a remarkable person. An overview of the very entertaining fireside is that Thurl Bailey was an excellent student in school with strong family support, but had never picked up a basketball until the 7th grade. He faced great disappointment when he was cut from the school basketball teams in 7th and 8th grade. At that time he was 6 feet 8 inches tall. In 9th grade he made the team and was co-captain, but played very little. Deciding he really enjoyed playing, he put a lot of effort into learning the game. When he graduated from high school, he was offered 300 or 400 (I forget) college scholarships. After graduation from college, he was in the first round draft picks for the NBA. He retired last year from the Utah Jazz.
