Extractions: December 1996 During a preseason scrimmage last year, Derek Anderson proclaimed his return to the Bluegrass basketball stage with one unforgettable, split-second move that shall forever and ever be remembered simply as "The Dunk." Amen. Even his University of Kentucky coaches deemed it a moment of archival quality. They later presented Anderson with a videotape of the play in a box they had hand-marked, for easy reference, "The Dunk." There have, as yet, been no sequels. Now, a year later, in the slightly disheveled Wildcat Lodge dorm room he shares with fellow senior Anthony Epps, Anderson flashes his 1,000-watt, Magic Johnson smile at the mention of this defining moment. Then the former Doss High School star pops the prized videocassette into his VCR and relives his scintillating slam. True-blue Wildcat fans will recall that the play began much as any UK fast break. Anderson, dribbling the basketball, raced up the middle of the court, flanked by Jared Prickett and Ron Mercer, both looking for a pass. Defenders positioned themselves to force the ball toward a lower-percentage shot from the side. Nothing seemed uncommon about this basketball scenario yet. "See it; there it is," Anderson says as the play sets up on his TV screen. "Jared Prickett went this way and everybody else was looking, because Ron, right here on the left, was ready to go up for the alley-oop. He thought I was throwing it to him, too. I fooled everybody."

Extractions: December 1996 "A lot of people didn't believe in Derek because they thought he was thin and he wasn't going to be strong enough. But I knew what a ballplayer was. I always knew that he was going to be something special. I knew from a young age." Among Anderson's most outstanding attributes: He's ambidextrous. He can shoot accurately from the 3-point line with both his right and left hands. Once, in high school, he hurt his normal shooting hand, so he shot his free throws for the game with his left and didn't miss any. He's also blessed with a lightning-quick first step, a must for those who wish to penetrate and create at the big-time level. And then there's "The Dunk." Williams first saw it in Columbus, Ohio, when Anderson was performing in a summer league after his first season at Ohio State. "He was playing with Nick Van Exel and Jimmy Jackson and some of the pros up there," his uncle recalls. "There was a dude on him, and Derek came down the lane, (threw it off the backboard) and dunked it. They stopped the game." hen Derek and his older brother Steve (who played high school football and has recently completed a stint with the Navy) were teens, Williams took them to the Flaget High gym. A group of ex-high school and -college competitors shot hoops there every Saturday. "A lot of them were good athletes and they had good fundamentals," says Williams. "And that's where Derek really learned the game. . . . All of them worked with Derek.

Chosen in the first round of the 1997 NBA draft by the Cleveland Cavaliers (l3th pick overall), Derek became an instant contributor to the team and a regular starter in his rookie season. Despite a serious knee injury that kept him off the hardwood for 15 games, Derek was fourth in the league in free-throw shooting percentage and a member of the Schick 1997-98 NBA All-Rookie team. When Nike launched its Brand Jordan athletic apparel company, Derek was among the five NBA stars hand-picked by Michael Jordan to endorse his shoe line. After two productive seasons with the Cavaliers, Derek was traded before the 1999-2000 season to the Los Angeles Clippers where he quickly blended with the new system and became a starting guard.
