Excerpt: Alexander Emmanuel "Alex" Rodriguez (born July 27, 1975) is an American professional baseball player of Dominican parentage. Nicknamed "A-Rod", he currently plays third base for the New York Yankees of Major League Baseball. He previously played shortstop for the Seattle Mariners and the Texas Rangers. Rodriguez is considered one of the best all-around baseball players of all time. He is the youngest player ever to hit 500 home runs, breaking the record Jimmie Foxx set in 1939. In December 2007, Rodriguez and the Yankees agreed to a 10-year, $275 million contract. This contract was the richest contract in baseball history (breaking his previous record of $252 million). In February 2009, after previously denying use of performance-enhancing drugs, including during a 2007 interview with Katie Couric on 60 Minutes, Rodriguez admitted to using steroids, saying he used them from 2001 to 2003 due to what he called "an enormous amount of pressure" to perform. Rodriguez was born in the Washington Heights section of New York City to a Dominican family. When he was four, Rodriguez and his parents moved to the Dominican Republic, then to Miami, Florida. Rodriguez's favorite baseball players when he was growing up were Keith Hernandez, Dale Murphy, and Cal Ripken, and his favorite team was the New York Mets. Rodriguez was a star shortstop at Miami's Westminster Christian High School. In 100 games he batted .419 with 90 steals. Westminster went on to win the high school national championship in his junior year. He was...More: http://booksllc.net/?id=212472 ... Read more

From the supplier: The front page of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch on Sep 28, 1998 featured a large photograph of baseball player Mark McGwire and a short article about his 70th home run. This move by the paper's editors to devote the entire front page to McGwire is considered a business decision since the coverage of McGwire means increased circulation and advertisers. However, these come at the expense of other important events which deserved coverage such as Hurricane George and the electoral defeat of German Chancellor Helmut Kohl.

Amazon.com Review
If your dreams of wrapping a mitt around a Mark McGwire orSammy Sosa record-setting home-run baseball were dashed with the closeof the 1998 season, you have another shot: purchasers of this catalogare eligible to participate in Guernsey's "Baseballs of 1998" auction, where, thanks to the generosity of several sure-handed gentlemen,McGwire home-run balls Nos. 63, 67, 68, and 70, and Sosa's Nos. 61,64, and 66, are on the bidding block. The catalog not only grantsadmission to the auction--held on January 12, 1999 in New York'sMadison Square Garden--but contains an absentee-bid form for thoseunable to attend the event. The catalog also pays tribute to theround-tripper, with elegant profiles of some of the game's mostheroic, memorable homers: Bobby Thompson's "Shot Heard 'Round theWord"; Babe Ruth's predicted bash in the 1932 World Series; and, ofcourse, McGwire and Sosa's race to break Roger Maris's single-seasonhome-run record. Photographs of the McGwire and Sosa baseballs areaccompanied by accounts of the men who caught them, and the insanitythat ensued. Several other home-run related items will be auctioned,as well, including Henry Aaron's final homer, No. 755. ... Read more

From the supplier: The 62nd home run of baseball player Mark McGwire on Sep 8, 1998 was sufficiently covered by three TV stations in St. Louis, MO, namely, KSDK (Channel 5), KMOV (Channel 4) and KDNL (Channel 30). However, Channel 5 provided the best coverage which included a piece on McGwire's achievements and comprehensive details accompanying the video of McGwire's home run. Coverages by Channel 4 and Channel 30 are also evaluated.

Product Description
In Mark and Me, Jay McGwire provides an inside look at his reclusive older brother, baseball slugger Mark McGwire, and their All-American, sports-loving family, and also offers a detailed entry into the world of steroids. Jay dispels Jose Canseco s steroid tales about Mark, in the process setting the record straight and offering a detailed account of what really happened to Mark how he got started on steroids, what he used, and the dramatic effect that steroids had on his body and on baseball history. For years, baseball fans have wondered what fueled the man who broke Roger Maris single-season home run mark, the most hallowed record in sports. Jay knows the truth about Mark and tells all. A series of coincidences in the brothers lives transpired to make them collaborators in creating the ultimate home run-hitting machine.Jay also reveals the missing piece to baseball s steroids puzzle but this is more than just a steroid expose. While Jay s revelation will make headlines the world over and forever change the way baseball and its fans view Mark s accomplishments, Mark and Me will offer insight into Mark McGwire the person, not the superstar slugger fans have come to know. Mark s partying, his temper, and his strained familial relationships are all brought to light in this fascinating family tale. And, of course, there is redemption. Mark hasn t admitted his steroid use, but Jay is determined to set the record straight. After hitting rock bottom having suffered a severe depression due to steroid use Jay found redemption through his Christian faith and can no longer lie to people who ask him about his older brother. As a personal trainer and the owner of his own gym, Jay now teaches young athletes about the perils of steroid use-and shows them how they can excel naturally, through hard work, good nutrition, and healthy, legal supplements.Mark and Me is a much-needed addition to the steroid expose genre, but it is also a fascinating cautionary and redemptive tale that will not only set the record straight on one of baseball s greatest sluggers, but it will also inspire others to compete on the level and without the use of performance-enhancing drugs. ... 3-0 out of 5 stars Nothing New
When Mark McGwire was making baseball history during the course of the 1998 season, it seemed the whole world was pulling for him.He handled the massive media blitz with relative ease, patiently answering all the inane questions reporters invariably ask, while forming a special bond with his only threat to the home run title - Chicago's Sammy Sosa.McGwire was one charming superstar, that's for sure; Sammy was too, for that matter. We couldn't get enough of them.

How times have changed. Before the steroids scandal became public domain, the baseball world seemed to take a "don't ask; don't tell" policy about the obvious performance enhancing drugs these guys were using. As long as we pretended that McGwire, Sosa and Bonds were just in really, really great shape; we were happy watching the home runs fly.

Now, over a decade later, the records posted by McGwire, Sosa and Bonds seem hollow.Big deal; they hit all those dingers while they were getting "pumped up" in a manner that's totally against the rules, and endangering their physical well-being, to boot.In retrospect, the 61* posted by the late, great, Roger Maris nearly 50 years ago should once again be acknowledged as the genuine record.

In the meantime, Mark McGwire's younger brother, Jay, has penned this fairly lame expose - "the truth behind baseball's worst-kept secret" - but there's nothing new here. This is all stuff that we already knew or already suspected.I won't judge his motive for finally revealing the awful truth, but his story seems fairly irrelevent; at times, mildly amusing and somewhat compelling; but in the final analysis, this effort is nothing more than a pop up to the infield.Unless you absolutely have to have everything written about Big Mac, I'd pass on this particular literary endeavor.Spend your hard-earned money on something else.

Off the top of my head, one baseball book that's really caught my fancy is Edward Achorn's wonderful historical biography, Fifty-Nine in '84: Old Hoss Radbourn, Barehanded Baseball, and the Greatest Season a Pitcher Ever Had.

5-0 out of 5 stars Really need to read it
have followed Mark McGwire, so really wanted to see what the book was about. It is a great family story, talks about Jay and his relationship with his brothers, only talks about Mark in the end.It neither confirms or denys, it only creates speculation.Writen well, i hope people take it in the manner it is written.

1-0 out of 5 stars NOT WHAT YOU THINK!!!!
I bought this book hoping to get some secrets about Mark Mcgwire that we didnt already know. I am a huge baseball fan and was hoping to read about baseball and all the "steroid era cheaters" and all I get is over a hundred pages about the trials and tribulations of a wanna be aspiring body builder who likes living off of his two brothers names. No one cares about Jay Mcgwire or ever will. I am so happy for him that he went from partying addict to being "Born Again" but who cares. All this guy wanted the reader to know is that he was a steroid user and he helped his brother use them. Jay Mcgwire thinks he is responsible for his brothers achievments and makes sure the reader knows. Whatever Jay! Worst book I ever read.Disappointed is an understatement.

5-0 out of 5 stars GREAT , CAPTIVATING, AND A REAL EYE OPENER!!
Mark and Me: Mark McGwire and the Truth Behind Baseball's Worst-kept Secret,

I started reading this book and couldn't put it down!I think the other review where the guy says it's not relevant, is way off base, this story penned by JAY is TOTALLY RELEVANT as Jay lived it all with his brother Mark Mcgwire!

If you have any interest in Steroids, Baseball and/or Mark McGwire this is a MUST read! This book tells the truth about one of the great all time Baseball player, his brothers involvement in rebuilding his career, and some intimate secrets that no one new about until now.

When you can, check out "Mark and Me"

1-0 out of 5 stars MARK and......who?
First of all, not much new [relevent] information is present here in regards to the whole Mark McGwire situation. The story (and YES, I say 'story,' as very little evidence and proof backs up lil bro's story) is pretty much told from the viewpoint of Mark's brother, obviously. The non-public personal lives between the brothers is showcased early, yet you are only hearing from Jay, and his POV - not Mark.

This is simply yet another friend/family member trying to get rich and/or celebrity status by clinging onto their famous friend/family member's stardom. Not surprising since the two have been estranged for nearly a decade now, but it still amazes me that someone with absolutely no writing experience nor training writes a "book" to try and cash-in on a family members' story. Does anyone really think they would pay attention if this was called "The JAY McGwire Story"?

My stance on the whole "steroid-era" is this - I DON'T CARE ANYMORE. Baseball players (and athletes in general) cheat. Unfortunately, it is human nature. If there is a way to get a leg-up on the competition, some will take it, not even thinking about the consequences. Of course this is not true for everyone in the sports world, but as for baseball, what are we to believe anymore? Cheating, in many forms, has been rampant since baseball's inception, and players will find ways to cheat in the future. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars A story about a happier time in the history of baseball and the lives of these two great players.
The home run duel between Sammy Sosa and Mark McGuire provided one of the most long-term electric moments in the history of professional sports. It was a boost that baseball badly needed after the festering problems of labor difficulties and the strikes. Of all the season and career records in baseball, the home run records generate the most interest and this was about two men simultaneously chasing the big one.
The single-season home run record had been set in 1961 by Roger Maris, amid a great deal of controversy over whether it should count, having been set in a 162 game season versus a 154 season. Furthermore, Maris was not a popular player, he came across as sullen and distant and he was eclipsing the revered Mickey Mantle.
In 1998, Sammy Sosa and Mark McGuire were two of the most popular players in baseball, so no one begrudged their chasing of the record. It was an exciting time, captured well in this book for children. Without descending into mindless hype and minutia, the authors capture the excitement of the time as well as the humble nature of the primary participants. It was a joy to read about this happier time in the history of baseball and the lives of these two great players.
