Product Description
This twenty-fifth anniversary edition of Willie’s Time: Baseball’s Golden Age restores to print Charles Einstein’s vivid biography of one of baseball’s foremost legends. With a new preface from the author, this volume replays the most dramatic moments of the Say Hey Kid’s career—from the 1951 Miracle Giants to the Amazing Mets of 1973—and takes us inside the lives of Ruth, DiMaggio, Aaron, Durocher, and others along the way. Einstein offers a compelling and complete look at Mays: as a youth in racist Birmingham, a triumphant symbol of African American success, a sports hero lionized by fans, and yet all the while, still a very human figure destined to play for two decades amid baseball’s Golden Age.

First published in 1979, Willie's Time is the only ballplayerbiography ever named a finalist for the Pulitzer Prize. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Book
Willie Mays was my hero when I was a boy. The book captured his vitality and spirit nicely. Picking up and reading it -- I'm 12 years old again watching him catch and hit again. That's MY Willie Mays!

5-0 out of 5 stars History lesson
This book is a great history lesson not just of baseball but of the times Willie played. There are many memories of the "Giants" of yesterday.

5-0 out of 5 stars a magical book about a truly great baseball player
"Willie's Time," by Charles Einstein, is a magical read, in my opinion.Einstein basically starts when Willie made it to the "Bigs," and he weaves history into the phenomenal career of Willie Mays, who is arguably the greatest baseball player that ever lived.

I started playing Little League baseball in 1960, and I played center.Willie Mays was my hero.Mays could-and did-do it all: (1)hit for average, (2)hit with power, (3)run the bases, (4)play defense, and (5)win games for his team with intangibles. Many players challenged Willie's arm, and Mays threw the majority of them out.

To attempt to compare drug-enhanced players of today with Willie Mays is ludicrous. They are mere children compared to Willie.

Today (27 May 2005), Major League Baseball no longer exists (to me).But "Willie's Time" was a wonderful reminder of not only a great baseball player, but also a time when Major League Baseball was fun.(RIP, Major League Baseball.)

In my opinion, you will NOT be disappointed if you buy this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars say hey hey hey
This book is a great autobiography about a great black baseball player that ever played the game. This story will tell you about how he grew up in broyklen playing stickball in the streets with all of his friends. When this great ball player got his chance to play baseball for money he took it. He first started out in the Negro leagues for the New York giant's minor league team and then he finally got his chance to play in the bigs and play centerfield and right field because the rightfeilder was really slow so the coach had him playing two positions. When he went up to the bigs, he really helped there team go all the way to the World Series to play against the Indians. The giants swept the Indians in three straight games and took the pennit.

I would recommend this book to anybody out there who loves the game of baseball. It is a well-written autobiography about a great baseball player who was voted the greatest player of his time. If you wanted to pick this book up and read it you would fall in love with the game of baseball or fall in love with Willie Mays hays.

3-0 out of 5 stars Say Hey?
I read this book a few years ago, and was both interested in Willie Mays not only as a player, but as a man.Growing up a baseball player Willie Mays was someone to idolize, and with the way he played, this was easy to do.What was most sad about this book was the fact that Willie ended up a great career having little money to show for it, and had to become a greeter at a casino to make ends meet. One can only imagine how much money he would command now, and how he would be set for life in today's current baseball climate. If A-Rod gets $25 million a year, than Willie would get much more. This book gets points for being an honest look at Willie's life, from his own perspective, and for that I aplaud him.If you like baseball, you will like this book.

4-0 out of 5 stars A very well written autobiography
The autobiography of Willie Mayes portrays the life and times of one of America's best baseball players.Willie Mays played with a style and flairunmatched in this day and age. The book describes his trials andtribulations growing up in the deep south.

It is a very well-writtenautobiography, and if readers are into baseball or Willie Mays this is anexcellent selection. It is an excellent selection because it is a profileof American baseball and the way we idolize professional athletes.

5-0 out of 5 stars A great book on the greatest all around ballplayer ever!!!
If you grew up during the 50s and 60s, Willie Mays was a household name.He is an american icon, and was recently voted the greatest living ballplayer. This book covers the remarkable life of this american hero, from his humble beginnings in segregated Alabama, to fame and fortune inthe major leagues, to his struggle to learn to live without baseball. Willie Mays is an american hero, and this is the best book there is onWillie Mays.Say Hey!!!!!

Book Description

As much as any other sports figure, Willie Mays embodies the changes that racial integration brought to America’s game fields and its larger culture in the mid-20th century. Playing baseball with grace, skill, flair, and obvious delight, Willie Mays broke color barriers for more than just himself. He combined the ability to stroke majestic home runs while with an equal ability to outrun and catch what would have been home runs for opponents—most famously when he turned Vic Wertz’s titantic blast into a long out in the 1954 World Series.  As is often said of great players but never more true than in his case, Willie Mays could do it all.

Assembled in this work are 40 representations of how contemporary artists respond to and portray the skill, fame, and sheer love of the game that make Mays so remarkable and memorable. The art includes a broad range of styles and media—from impressionistic graphite pencil drawings on paper through realistic Kodachrome photographic prints to expressionistic colored acrylics on canvas or glass. Mike Shannon offers a perceptive introductory essay on Mays’s long career and places the art in the context of his times. First curated as a traveling exhibit to honor Willie Mays’s 75th birthday, the exhibit opened at the Louisville Slugger Museum in Louisville, Kentucky, and is currently on tour.

Product Description
There are very few major personalities in the world of sports who have so much to say about our National Pastime. And even fewer who are as well respected as Bill White.

Bill White, who's now in his mid 70s, was an All-Star first baseman formany years with the New York Giants, St.Louis Cardinals and PhiladelphiaPhillies before launching a stellar broadcasting career with the NewYork Yankees for 18 years. He left the broadcast booth to become thePresident of the National League for five years.

A true pioneer as an African-American athlete, sportscaster, and top baseball executive, White has written his long-awaited autobiography in which he will be candid, open, and as always, most forthcoming about his life in baseball. Along the way, White shares never-before-told stories about his long working relationship with Phil Rizzutto, insights on George Steinbrenner, Barry Bonds, Reggie Jackson, Thurman Munson, Bob Gibson, Bart Giamatti, Fay Vincent, and scores of other top baseball names and Hall of Famers.

Best of all, White built his career on being outspoken, and the years fortunately have not mellowed him. UPPITY is a baseball memoir that baseball fans everywhere will be buzzing about. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Young baseball fans everywhere will love taking a look at sports legend, the great Willie Mays!
If you simply run your fingers down Willie Mays' stats in the back of this book, you can only imagine the excitement his fans felt as he played game after game building them.William Howard Mays Jr. was the first of the superstars, perhaps given the subtle differences in the actual playing field, one of the best ever.He was what you would call a "five-tool player," a "player [who] excels at all facts of the game."When he was a young boy growing up in Westfield, Alabama, he was the type of boy who was a contender in not only baseball, but also football and basketball. It could be said Willie cut his teeth on baseball because as a babe he learned to walk by chasing a baseball. And he started walking at the age of six months.

His parents separated when he was quite young and family circumstances left him in the care of his father who raised him with the help of two aunts. He wasn't destined to be an only child because his mother remarried and gave him eleven half-siblings.Baseball was his father's passion as well and William Sr. played semipro ball, where his son eventually joined him.Willie Jr. lasted one hot night as a dishwasher and decided playing baseball was infinitely more appealing. He was a young man who had what it took to be a major contender in the game, but he had a few things to learn and one of them was that he had to play his own game and quit imitating his idol, Joe DiMaggio.Piper Davis, the manager of the Birmingham Black Barons, said "he had to get over his fascination with DiMaggio and play like Willie Mays."

Young Willie easily made an impression in the Negro Leagues, but as luck would have it, he was spotted by Eddie Montague.Montague was sent to scout Alonzo Perry, but his eye was soon on a young twenty-year-old whiz kid.In the blink of an eye Willie found himself signed with the New York Giants. He received jersey number twenty-four and was third in the lineup. There were some unexpected obstacles. The "fans were verbally abusive" and he needed to loosen up some.By the end of the year he was the National League Rookie of the Year.In this book you'll be taking a good look at the man behind the legend. You'll learn about The Catch, his discouraging military service, family tragedies, his awards, his marriages, how he felt when "his honeymoon with the New York fans" was over, you'll learn about what happened when the team moved to San Francisco, and you'll get to take a look at many other fascinating aspects of his career.

Young baseball fans everywhere will love taking a look at sports legend, the great Willie Mays. This very well written and researched portrait focuses more on the baseball career of Willie Mays than his personal life.Although we get a glimpse what his life was off the ballfield, the facts are brief and are not gone into in great depth.I liked the balance the book made between his personal life and his game.I expected to find a "baseball bio" and was certainly not disappointed. For example I loved reading about things like how he became the "Say Hey Kid," how he made that infamous catch, how he fine-tuned his swing, how he encountered racism, and other game related vignettes. In the back of the book is an index, a glossary, personal statistics, regular-season statistics, defensive statistics (outfield), postseason offensive statistics, source notes, a bibliography, and additional recommended website resources to explore. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Revisiting a Childhood Hero
A winner for adults as well as children! I grew up during the 1960s with baseball heroes like Willie Mays and Sandy Koufax, and reading this book with my two neices (4 and 7) was like revisiting a much-loved summer houseor vacation spot. Although the girls knew very little about baseball, theyloved the wonderful illustrations, and the lilting sing-song rhymes aboutthe great Willie Mays. This book would be especially appreciated bychildren from ethnic groups who don't always see themselves represented inmajor league sports: Willie didn't harp about race or racialdiscrimination, he just played the best game of baseball he could.
