Product Description
Roger Bresnahan is the same kind of a man. He thinks quickly, and is a brilliant player, but he never dodges anything. He is often hurt as a result. Once, when he was with the Giants, he was hit in the face with a pitched ball, and McGraw worried while he was laid up, for fear that it would make him bat shy. After he came back, he was just as friendly with the plate as ever. The injury of men like Chance and Bresnahan, whose services are of such vital importance to the "inside" play of a team, destroys the effectiveness of the club. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Book Made a Difference
I read this book as a young man...I am not sure when but I think it was when I was 10 or 11. I was a pretty good athlete when a kid but baseball was a sport, especially the hitting, that I could not master. I have very poor spatial perception that is neurologically-based so I was at a distinct disadvantage when up at the plate to see where the ball was in space. When I read this book, it gave me hope that I could get better. The ironic part is that the book really didn't help me get better in baseball...that just was not in the cards God gave me. But, it did give me the lesson that hard work pays off, that I could get better at stuff just by sticking to it and effort. Sometimes hard work doesn't work but it sure does make a difference in most things. Thanks to the author of this book for helping me to understand this.

3-0 out of 5 stars Not bad for baseball fans
Ok, not the greatest story ever, but a really good book to get a reluctant (reader) 7-year-old baseball fan to read. My son and I take turns reading every other page. And I like the message of this book -" ...try, try again" or "practice makes perfect" - something along those lines.

5-0 out of 5 stars Perseverance
This children's book is masterfully written. It's main message is perseverance, but the virtues of friendship and loyalty are also embodied here by Bobby's friend, Willie, who teaches him how to hit and by his teammates who put up with his "slump". Another nice touch is the realism -- the kids on the other team unrelentingly tease Bobby about his strikeouts and the children have to interrupt the pick-up game to deal with the interference caused by a pesky dog. Bobby also receives encouraging words from his mother giving it a good family feel. My 6, 4, and 2-year-olds all love this story which is illustrated with simple drawings.

5-0 out of 5 stars christian leagre
"Twenty times at bat and twenty strike outs" said Bobby. This summed up Bobbys baseball career. Bobby has no hope that he will ever be able to hit a baseball. In this book, it is spring time in bobby's neighborhood. Bobby loves to play baseball. He can run fast, slide and catch the ball. Sadly for Bobby he can not hit the ball. Kids make fun of him and call him names. bobby has a plan to get help.
I enjoyed this book because of the relationship between the main characters. The sports plot and the great illustration. Bobby and Willie have a great friendship, because they care about each other. When Bobby told Willie he wanted to learn how to hit a baseball, Willie enthusiastically took the job. I thought the advice that Willie gave to Bobby was quite helpful. Willie told that being that being able to hit a baseball takes hard work and practice, not just a lucky bat or helmet.I like this book because of the colorful, bright illustrations that were on almost every page.

2-0 out of 5 stars Your Out of Here!!
I didn't particularly like Here Comes the Strikeout.I thought the reading level was a little higher then what they said it was. It was also a little long and I don't think it could keep a child's interest. Young children are mainly looking at the pictures and this book didn't have good pictures that really illustrated what the book was trying to say. I would recommend with book for first graders maybe, but not kids younger then that. The vocabulary is simple but some of the words in sentences are quite tongue-twisters and I think this will get children discouraged if they can't say them. All together, I really don't like this book for young children. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars YankeeFans
I purchased this book to replace the original paperback book, which we have now worn out. The paperback was my origianl, which was then read by my Sons and now is being read by my 8 Grandsons as they get old enough. Ifyou are a Yankee fan, you will really enjoy this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Yankee fan must have
Bought it for my husband who is an avid Yankee fan.He loves it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Return to Those Thrilling Days of Yesteryear
Having been born in 1945 and living just north of NYC I've been a Yankee fan for about 60 years. I remember being stunned when Cleveland finished ahead of the Yankees in 1954. I had always presumed that the regular season was played and then the Yankees won the World Series. This book brings back endless pleasant memories: WPIX Channel 11 and Mel Allen; Raschi, Reynolds; Lopat and Ford; Dimaggio, Mantle, Berra, Rizzuto and Stengel; Larsen's perfect game; the 1961 home run race; and finally the decidedly unpleasant end of the era.

The author gives several page mini-bios of the Yankee stars of the era. He seems to have interviewed 90% of them. What different attitudes.

Suspect this book is not for everyone but for those of us who grew up Yankee fans in and around NYC during the Truman and Eisenhower administrations it's a book you don't want to end.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Rise & Fall of a Dynasty
The New York Yankees are the most celebrated and successful franchise in American sports history; with 27 World Series championships to their credit, they are the epitome of great team achievement - from Babe Ruth to Derek Jeter.

There was an amazing sixteen season span, from 1949 to 1964, when the Yankees participated in fourteen Fall Classics, winning nine times (including five in a row), and inspiring this wonderfully comprehensive piece of work by Peter Golenbock.Whether you're a Yankees fan, a Yankees hater, or simply a fan of the game, you'll love reading this treasure. It captures the essence of the Yankees, when they were at the absolute top of their game, as well as their slow fade into temporary oblivion after the '64 World Series.

If you lived in the New York area in the late '40s to the mid '50s, you may have become blase about the World Series; after all, if the Yankees didn't win, it was either the Giants ('54) or Dodgers ('55) reigning supreme. It took the Milwaukee Braves to break that streak in 1957, defeating (who else?) the Yankees in a great showdown.

This is a fascinating historical perspective; how Casey Stengel after years of managerial mediocrity became a "genius" when he took over the helm at the beginning of the Yankee dynasty; how Joe DiMaggio quietly controlled the clubhouse, scaring the heck out of a young Mickey Mantle; how the tandem of Mantle & Ford ran the "corporation" until the very end of this period; and how Yogi Berra quietly excelled as the team leader ON the field, and later became the scapegoat for the team's demise, as manager of the '64 edition.

Golenbock also chronicles some of the "lesser" players (my favorite - Ryne Duren), giving the reader a unique and comprehensive "fly on the wall" perspective of this franchise as it stormed through each season, usually winning it all in October.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Yankee Book!5 stars for book 2 stars for copy I purchased used!
My first copy was given to me when I was a boy.The binding went bad (I'm 49 now).Purchased used copy which was paperback. It was an old yellowed copy but since I've read it before, I only wanted a cheap copy to refer to from time to time.Too bad this great book is out of print currently.

5-0 out of 5 stars Our Mickey: Cherished Book
I am a huge Yankee fan and I have read a lot of books about them including some about Mickey Mantle.Out of all the books about the Mick this is my favorite.

Bill Liederman and Maury Allen have created a different perspective about Mantle by not telling about his life and career but letting his freinds and other famous people who knew Mickey best, write a paragraph about experiences with him.It shows the real Mickey Mantle and some of the funny and great things he did.

The book is divided in four categories; Mickey as a Yankee and Teamate, Mickey as Legend, Mickey as Personality, and Mickey as a Ballplayer. The book has people such as Whitey Ford, Willie Mays, Billy Chrystal, Joe Torre, Donald Trump, Regis Philbin, and more.

I loved reading this book and I recommend it to not just a Yankee fan but any baseball fan or someone who lived during his career and remember him.

5-0 out of 5 stars A 4-bagger
First, I am not a Yankees fan, but they have had some great players over the years and Mantle is, arguably, one of the best, and I have always admired his considerable talent. Everyone knows his statistics and how he liked to party, but I was looking for some insights into the man, and this book delivered. The book is a series of reminiscences by teammates, opponents, writers, friends and people whose lives were touched in some way by Mantle. Some are funny, some are poignant, but all of them together give a picture of the man. If you enjoy reading about the person behind the legend, and how he was perceived by others who knew him, then you'll enjoy this book. It's a good read and I recommend it heartily.

5-0 out of 5 stars Congratulations
Well done!I remember when you two were kicking around the idea of a Mickey Mantle book.Congratulations on all your great ideas coming to fruition. You two make an excellent team.Good luck, I hope you sell them all!I look forward to your next collaboration.

5-0 out of 5 stars A fresh take on the legend of the Mick
There are lots of Mickey Mantle books out there, but I've never seen another like this. Anecdotes about Mickey from friends, teammates, and notable fans whose lives he touched. It's a fun, fast read as each story gives you a new perspective on one of the most colorful Yankees of all time. Unlike the standard-issue biographies out there, this book reads like a series of quick conversations and it is fascinating and entertaining to hear from such diverse names as Yogi Berra, David Halberstam, Regis Philbin, and Willie Mays. I learned a lot that I didn't know about Mickey, and I highly recommend this for you other Yankee fans out there. ... Read more
