5-0 out of 5 stars Yankee Ace Embellishes Story of Baseball Career with Amusing Anecdotes
Whitey Ford knew how to win--as evidenced by his 236-106 lifetime record, giving him the best winning percentage for a modern day pitcher with more than 150 wins, and his extremely low lifetime 2.75 ERA.He won 10 more games in the World Series, with a slightly better ERA. The Yankee Hall-of-Fame pitching ace is a very savvy baseball person, so it is interesting to hear him relate the baseball side of his career, including his comments on each World Series victory. But Whitey to this day is also a fun-loving regular guy, and that is reflected in the prevailing aspect of "Slick," his easy-reading book:its great storytelling and humor.

During his career, Whitey was not a particularly colorful or controversial personality. He may not have had the most drinks at Toots Shor's, but he was still a big part of the party, with Billy Martin, Mickey Mantle, or whomever.Whitey tells of events such as the famous Copacabana incident and the Phil Linz harmonica incident. He tells us how he was always willing to engage in fun activities or make a fun bet, such as against Jackie Gleason in a pool match. He also made sure he won Giant owner Horace Stoneham's double-or-nothing wager: at stake were golf expenses he and Mantle had run up on Stoneham's tab.Stoneham said it would be even if Ford got nemesis Willie Mays out in the 1961 All-Star Game, so Ford struck out Mays by throwing a spitball.Whitey also tells about using mudballs and cutballs late in his career and devotes a chapter to discussing cheating -- honest confessions (but Ford points out that so many other pitchers cheated too). His storytelling can extend outside of baseball.Whitey tried to use his bonus money to purchase a radio/record player at a store, but the proprietors called the police, suspicious about why Whitey had so much cash, not knowing who he really was. After Ford's identity was verified, they tried to accept the cash...Sorry guys.

While Ford was competitive, he was never nasty or a prima donna, and that is part of his appeal. As Mickey Mantle relates in the preface, Whitey is very likable, always getting along with everyone.Interestingly, Ford remarks that he could never have been a manager because he could not be tough enough. In this vein, "Slick" is upbeat, with none of the bitterness typical of so many sports autobiographies. All baseball fans should enjoy it.

4-0 out of 5 stars A NICE READ FROM CHAIMAN OF THE BOARD
THIS IS THE STORY OF WHITEY FORD. IT IS VERY EASY READING AND ENJOYABLE BOOK. WHITEY DOESN'T GO INTO MUCH DETAIL ABOUT ALL THE DRINKING AND CAROUSING HE AND HIS BUDDIES (BILLY AND MICKEY) DID.
BUT HE HAS SEVERAL FUNNY STORIES. IT QUITE ENTERTAINING AND ENLIGHTENING. WHITEY TELLS ABOUT US WHAT HE HAD TO DO IN HIS LATER YEARS TO STAY HANG ON. HE GOES INTO SOME DETAIL ABOUT SCUFFING THE BALL AND OTHER WAYS HE USED TO DOCTOR THE BALL. HE IS A GOOD STORY TELLER AND I RECOMMEND THIS ALL BASEBALL FANS.

3-0 out of 5 stars Slick My Life In and Around Baseball
I enjoyed reading this book.I found this book interesting, funny, and informative. Most books I read seem to be dull and boring but this one was different. If you are a fan of baseball then i think you will enjoy reading this book. This book gives the point of view from a profesional baseball player and his expeirence of what goes on that people don't get to see pro athletes do and how they act.I would recomend this book to all readers because I think they would enjoy it as I did. ... Excerpt: Mickey Charles Mantle (October 20, 1931 August 13, 1995) was a legendary American baseball player who was inducted into the National Baseball Hall of Fame in 1974. He played his storied 18-year major-league professional career all for the New York Yankees, winning 3 American League MVP titles and playing in 16 All-Star games. Mantle played on 12 pennant winners and 7 World Series Championship clubs. He still holds the records for most World Series home runs (18), RBIs (40), runs (42), walks (43), extra-base hits (26), and total bases (123). He is also the career leader in walk-off home runs, with a combined 13 in regular season and post-season play (12 regular, 1 postseason) . He is regarded by many to be the greatest switch hitter of all time, and one of the greatest players in baseball history. Mickey Mantle was born in Spavinaw, Oklahoma, the son of Elvin Charles Mantle and Lovell (née Richardson) Mantle. He was named in honor of Mickey Cochrane, the Hall of Fame catcher from the Philadelphia Athletics, by his father, known as "Mutt," who was an amateur player and fervent fan. Product Description
Called the "Chairman of the Board" because of his remarkable control in big-money games, Eddie "Whitey" Ford still holds the record for World Series wins (10), and was Casey Stengel’s ace during much of the Yankees’ historic mid-century pennant streak. Off the mound, Whitey’s carousing with Mickey Mantle was legendary, and he, in many ways, symbolizes the excesses and good fortunes of the Yankees during that era—living hard and winning often.

This book delves into the life and baseball career of Whitey Ford, the Hall of Fame left-hander who helped the Yankees win 11 pennants and six world championships. After a childhood on the New York sandlots, he quickly worked his way through the Yankees farm system and, when called up in 1950, won nine straight in a pennant race and then won the final game of the World Series sweep of the Phillies. He would go on to pitch for 16 seasons—all of them with New York—and retire as the winningest pitcher in franchise history. His story is detailed here with a generous helping of play-by-play action and personal anecdotes. Seven appendices offer Ford’s career statistics and compare him to other great pitchers, past and present. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Whitey approves this message
Mr. Coverdale may be the most accurate baseball biographer, but he ranks among the driest. This book details about every start Ford ever made as a major leaguer. It's like a set of 460 box scores made into prose. What it lacks is any description of Whitey's private life after he became a Yankee, including the fun times with Mickey. The most famous stories are repeated in brief: the Copacabana incident, the Phil Linz harmonica strife, and Whitey's late career scuffing of the ball. But seek in vain for a "life" story here. And the book abruptly ends with Whitey's retirement. If you like Whitey, as I do, even though I'm not a Yankee fan, you want to know more about him. Has he been happy these last 39 years?

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Book
As a lifelong Yankee fan and an avid reader of sports biographies, Mr. Coverdale's Whitey Ford ranks number one in my book. Meticulously researched and consequently bereft of the inaccuracies which mar so many sport biographies, the book fully captures the excitement and mystique of the Yankee glory years in the 1950's and 60's. ... Few franchises in promotional sports can boast a list of legendary players to rival that of the New York Yankees.Ruth Gehrig, DiMaggio, Mantle:the names transcend even the game itself and have become part of a larger American cultural vocabulary. In Few and Chosen, Whitey Ford has taken on the daunting challenge of ranking the five greatest Yankees at each position, and the result is a fascinating romp through the history of a storied franchise to the current stars carrying on its unique tradition. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars A PLEASURE TO READ
I REALLY ENJOYED THIS BOOK. IT WAS GREAT TO READ ABOUT WHITEY'S OPINIONS, REASONS, EXPERIENCES, AND SOME GREAT BASEBALL STORIES. I AM A BIG FAN OF WHITEY'S AND HAVE BEEN SINCE THE 60'S. GLAD TO HEAR FROM HIM IN THIS ONE OF A KIND BOOK. WHITEY IS VERY HONEST, OPEN, AND HAS GREAT INSIGHT IN RANKING THE BEST TEAM IN BASEBALL POSOTION BY POSITION. A MUST READ FOR ALL FANS AND ESPECIALLY YANKEE FANS. THANKS WHITEY, FOR A GREAT READ AND A LOT OF ENTERTAINMENT. VERY HIGHLY RECOMMENDED.

4-0 out of 5 stars Job well done by Whitey
Whitey Ford's new book, with former Yankee beat writer Phil Pepe,is a winner.Picking the top 5 players at each position might seem easy, until you sit and think about the long line of great players the Yankees have fielded. Not that theres a lot of controversy, but a couple of Ford's picks might surprise you.Its an enjoyable rehash for older fans with mostly familiar anecdotes. It's also an education for younger fans who might not be familiar with past Yankee greats. And the cover photo is indeed a Yankee cap, worn by them in the early 20's,although I feel that the navy blue cap with the white interlocking NY would have been a better choice.

4-0 out of 5 stars A comfortable book
Reading Whitey Ford's "Few and Chosen" is like listening to him....soft-spoken with a twinkle in his eye. This is a book you can pick up and put down and not miss much. The stories are usually short (sometimes too short) and the anecdotes are just about what you'd expect to hear from "The Chairman of the Board".

I appreciate Whitey Ford's honesty with regard to players who preceded him. He doesn't comment on them much because he didn't see them play. Still, he gives what impressions he has. After reading Tim McCarver's disappointing and overworked "Perfect Season" several years ago, "Few and Chosen" is like a breath of fresh air.

There are a few new facts (new to me, anyway) that come out in his book, like the small numbers of home runs hit by players before Babe Ruth. Things of this nature help to make baseball more interesting to many of us.

Whitey Ford pitched the first baseball game I ever saw in 1963. I'm glad he's still around to pass on his observations to us.

5-0 out of 5 stars Enjoyable and well-written
I recently read the book written by Whitey Ford, entitled Few and Chosen, published by Triumph Books.I found the book to be extremely enjoyable and very well-written.Whitney Ford offers personal and insightful analyses of the five best players at each position, and the contributions made by the players. The book provides a very creative review of the accomplishments and the character of the great players who played for the New York Yankees.I enjoyed reading the book very much.I commend Triumph Books for publishing such a creative and enjoyable book, and I highly recommend the book and the work of Whitey Ford.

5-0 out of 5 stars Baseball Nostalgia Galore
I don't proclaim to be a great Yankee fan but a great baseball fan. This book has something for everyone. Besides ranking the greatest Yankees, I agree with most disagree with some, Whitey just provides some stories about players that are riveting. Most you have never heard or read anywhere else. That is what is exciting to me. These stories really bring alive a time and place that baseball was and is trying to get back to. You are brought back in time to a place in America when baseball was all important. Now you can at least experience the fun of reading about it and being there for a while. ... Read more

Product Description
In The Wit and Wisdom of Yogi Berra, author Phil Pepe takes Yogi from St. Louis to New York's Yankee Stadium and Shea Stadium, including all the stops along the way--from the days he put soles on women's shoes to his induction into the Baseball's Hall of Fame, when he coined one of his most remembered phrases:"I thank everybody for making this day necessary."

Phil Pepe explores Yogi Berra as a boy, player, hero, coach, manager, husband, and father, a buffoon and a human being. He relates all of the Berraisms in an absorbing treatment that is simultaneously comical, thoughtful, and biographical.Who can forget what Yogi said about a popular restaurant:"Nobody goes there anymore. It's too crowded."Or Yogi's take on Little League Baseball?"I think it's wonderful. It keeps the kids out of the house." ... Excerpt: Edward Charles "Whitey" Ford (born October 21, 1928) is a former Major League Baseball pitcher who spent his entire 18-year career with the New York Yankees. He was voted into the Baseball Hall of Fame in 1974. Ford was a native of the Astoria neighborhood of Queens, located in New York City just a few miles from Yankee Stadium over the Triborough Bridge. Ford was signed by the New York Yankees as an amateur free agent in 1947, and played his entire career in a Yankees uniform. He was given the nickname "Whitey" while in the minor leagues for his exceptionally blond hair. Ford graduated from Aviation High School in nearby Sunnyside, Queens. Ford began his Major League Baseball career on July 1, 1950, with the Yankees and made a spectacular debut, winning his first nine decisions before losing a game in relief. Ford received a handful of lower-ballot Most Valuable Player votes despite throwing just 112 innings, and was voted the AL Rookie of the Year by the Sporting News. (Walt Dropo was the Rookie of Year choice of the BBWAA.) In 1951 and 1952 he served in the Army during the Korean War. He rejoined the Yankees for the 1953 season, and the Yankee "Big Three" pitching staff became a "Big Four," as Ford joined Allie Reynolds, Vic Raschi and Eddie Lopat. Eventually Ford went from the No. 4 pitcher on a great staff to the universally acclaimed No. 1 pitcher of the Yankees, becoming known as the "Chairman of the Board" for his ability to remain calm and in command during high-pressure situations. He was also known as "Slick" a nickname given to him, Billy Martin and Mickey Mantle by manager Casey Stengel who called them Whiskey Slicks.
