Product Description
On New Year's Eve 1972, following eighteen magnificent seasons in the major leagues, Roberto Clemente died a hero's death, killed in a plane crash as he attempted to deliver food and medical supplies to Nicaragua after a devastating earthquake. David Maraniss now brings the great baseball player brilliantly back to life in Clemente: The Passion and Grace of Baseball's Last Hero, a book destined to become a modern classic. Much like his acclaimed biography of Vince Lombardi, When Pride Still Mattered, Maraniss uses his narrative sweep and meticulous detail to capture the myth and a real man.

Anyone who saw Clemente, as he played with a beautiful fury, will never forget him. He was a work of art in a game too often defined by statistics. During his career with the Pittsburgh Pirates, he won four batting titles and led his team to championships in 1960 and 1971, getting a hit in all fourteen World Series games in which he played. His career ended with three-thousand hits, the magical three-thousandth coming in his final at-bat, and he and the immortal Lou Gehrig are the only players to have the five-year waiting period waived so they could be enshrined in the Hall of Fame immediately after their deaths.

There is delightful baseball here, including thrilling accounts of the two World Series victories of Clemente's underdog Pittsburgh Pirates, but this is far more than just another baseball book. Roberto Clemente was that rare athlete who rose above sports to become a symbol of larger themes. Born near the canebrakes of rural Carolina, Puerto Rico, on August 18, 1934, at a time when there were no blacks or Puerto Ricans playing organized ball in the United States, Clemente went on to become the greatest Latino player in the major leagues. He was, in a sense, the Jackie Robinson of the Spanish-speaking world, a ballplayer of determination, grace, and dignity who paved the way and set the highest standard for waves of Latino players who followed in later generations and who now dominate the game.

The Clemente that Maraniss evokes was an idiosyncratic character who, unlike so many modern athletes, insisted that his responsibilities extended beyond the playing field. In his final years, his motto was that if you have a chance to help others and fail to do so, you are wasting your time on this earth. Here, in the final chapters, after capturing Clemente's life and times, Maraniss retraces his final days, from the earthquake to the accident, using newly uncovered documents to reveal the corruption and negligence that led the unwitting hero on a mission of mercy toward his untimely death as an uninspected, overloaded plane plunged into the sea. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Five Star Biography of a Five Star Man
I was never able to watch Roberto Clemente play, I'm far too young, but I have been hearing stories and anecdotes of his ability and dedication on and off of the field for my entire life. Not only was Roberto one of the best right fielders to play the game, but he was a humanitarian and a humble man - and based on how the average athlete acts these days, it can be hard to believe that someone like Clemente ever really lived.

This book is a story of baseball and the biography of a tremendous man.If you love baseball, then you'll love this book.If you love to read about people rising from nothing to truly make a difference in the world, then you will also love this book.Highly, highly recommended!

5-0 out of 5 stars Poignant story of a real baseball hero
Author David Maraniss' wonderful biography of Roberto Clemente gives readers a closer glimpse of this great player that not many of his peers got to know. Along with Clemente's greatness on the playing field, Maraniss brings into focus a man who many people thought to be moody and temperamental. Perhaps he was, but Clemente was not just a baseball player but a genuine hero in his native Puerto Rico and he played with fierce pride and carried himself with dignity and was revered throughout Latin America. To be sure, Clemente had his quirks, was a hypochondriac and touchy about the racial climate in the United States. Clemente also felt unappreciated by members of the press and fans throughout National League cities. However, Clemente's greatness came from within, a burning desire to be the best player he could be and to proudly represent his people, culture and heritage. His mission to Nicaragua is what Roberto Clemente was all about, and Maraniss' work is a landmark book about a great human being.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Heroic Life
Roberto Clemente was one of the most gifted athletes to ever play major league baseball. The last hit of his career - a double - also happened to be the 3000th hit of his career.Just a few months later he would be killed in a plane crash while attempting to aid victims of a devastating earth quake in Central America; but that was the story of his life - always trying to lend a helping hand to those in need.He did these things with no fanfare; that wasn't his style.

While Clemente performed his craft in Hall of Fame fashion for the Pittsburgh Pirates, he was regarded to be one of the finest "bad ball" hitters who ever lived; he was also unfairly labeled as somewhat of a malcontent; rarely smiling and frequently voicing his opinions that were considered to be mostly "sour grapes" comments by some of the baseball establishment. In reality, Clemente was only saying what was on his mind, but honesty is not always the best public relations policy in the glib world of baseball platitudes; especially in the '60s and '70s.

In the most comprehensive biography ever written about the man who proudly wore number 21 on his back, David Maraniss has captured the essence of what Roberto Clemente accomplished during his short life - on and off the baseball field. It's an inspiring saga, and one that is destined to be a classic. This is a book for all to enjoy; a celebration of the life of the great Roberto Clemente; a true hero.

4-0 out of 5 stars The Last Hero
When David Maraniss was growing up in Madison, at about the same time as I was, no doubt Henry Aaron attracted more of his attention than Roberto Clemente. But Clemente was always there, making even greater throws from Forbes Field's right field than Aaron's from the one at County Stadium. He was a great outfielder in an age that included Aaron, Mickey Mantle, and Willie Mays.Maraniss shows us not only his athletic prowess, but his humanity and his heroism on the real world stage.Clemente did almost as much to break the barrier for Latinos to play in the major leagues as Jackie Robinson did for African-Americans; but Clemente's revolution was lower on the public radar screen. His struggle for respect and appreciation (consistently underrated in the MVP voting most of his career) was quiet but fierce. From the initial story of how he became a Pirate because the Dodgers were attempting to hide his talent deep on the minor league bench, to the final saga of his tragic death trying to help victims of the Nicaraguan earthquake, Maraniss reveals important and dramatic stories that most sports fans and witnesses of human struggles in the twentieth century do not know. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Roberto Clemente: Pride of the Pittsburgh Pirates and PR
A well-written, almost poetically spare introduction to the life of Roberto Clemente. Starts with his life of poverty in Puerto Rico to his climb to the top of the major leagues. Ends with Mr. Clemente's untimely death in an airplane crash when he was transporting relief supplies to earthquake victims. Illustrations capture the feel of the times and experiences as well as the excitement of the sports action. This excellent picture book will introduce another generation to a real hero. The book "We'll never forget you Roberto Clemente is one of my favorite books! The book is about a baseball player who is so good that a lot of teams want him and they offer him huge money bonuses. Roberto first joined the Brooklyn Dodgers but then the Pittsburgh Pirates picked him to play for them. He played in the major leagues for many years. Throughout his life Roberto got to the All Star Game, the National League, and the World Series. He also won the Most Valuable Player award. He was one of the players with 3,000 hits! Roberto helped win all of the games he was in. The sad part is the ending. When you start reading this book you can not put it down. It's very exciting! I loved it! While I was reading the book I kept cheering on the Pittsburgh Pirates. Every page is exciting. Read this book. Highly recommended. I give this book 5 stars and 2 thumbs up!

5-0 out of 5 stars The Great One
We'll Never Forget You, Roberto Clemente is a great book. It tells all about the life of Roberto Clemente. He was the first Latin American in the Hall of Fame. He grew up very poor in Puerto Rico. He had to go work in the sugar cane fields to help his family when he was only six years old. Even though he had to work to help his family he still had time to play baseball. They used tin cans for balls and broomsticks for bats. Roberto was such a good player that he played in the San Juan League when he was only eight years old. When he was eighteen he went to a tryout and was discovered by some Major League scouts from the Brooklyn Dodgers. They sent him to the Montreal Expos, their farm team. While he was playing for the Expos he was discovered by the Pittsburg Pirates who drafted him. Roberto became a very famous baseball player. He won the MVP award in 1966 and was the National League batting champion four times. Roberto was not only a great baseball player he was also a great person. He was very proud of being Puerto Rican and worked hard so that people of all colors would be treated equally. He was killed in a plane accident while he was delivering supplies to earthquake victims in Nicaragua. I think this was one of the best books I ever read. Anyone that likes sports would like this book. I learned a lot about someone that I had never heard of before.

4-0 out of 5 stars With the grace of greatness
Markusen's biography of "The Great One" focuses more on his baseball career, while David Maraniss' 2006 Clemente: The Passion and Grace of Baseball's Last Hero provides more coverage of Clemente's off-field life. The two make a good bookend to the best right-fielder in Major League history. My "truth in reviewing" disclaimer:as a life-long Pirates fan, I may be slightly biased--but Clemente is still the best at his position anyway!

As I remarked in my review of the Maraniss book, Clemente was a strong individual with a strong, enigmatic, and sometimes misunderstood personality. He wore his Puerto Rican heritage proudly and sometimes on his sleeve, but as an early pioneer in the surge of Latin baseball players that now provides a strong percentage of Major League rosters, and rosters of All-star and playoff teams, it is easy to forget how instrumental Clemente was as the first Latin player elected to the Hall of Fame and as an outspoken champion of minority participation in sports and society.Markusen shows how this powerful pride both helped and hurt Clemente in his relations with teammates, managers, fans, and the media during his career.

Clemente was such a sweet player to watch at the peak of his game, as he was during the 1971 season and the Pirates drive to the 1971 World Series victory, capped by his continuation of his life-long streak of getting a hit in every World Series game he played in his career.Markusen's coverage of the 1971 season is the centerpiece of the book.

If you have only seen Clemente on paper in either of these books, find a video clip of his playing highlights. It will raise your appreciation of his amazing abilities at all facets of the game.

5-0 out of 5 stars Comprehensive Treatment of One of Baseball's Finest Players and Men
For the most part, this is a book about Roberto Clemente the baseball player, chronicling his career season by season.Clemente was known as "The Great One," but he was also the Proud One.He felt slighted for most of his career for not receiving the recognition he thought he deserved. But the 1971 World Series served to enlighten the public that he had always been among the very elite players of his day.Clemente was a four-time batting king, and as author Bruce Markusen observes, he had perhaps the greatest throwing arm of all time.Clemente always played with a greater drive. To me, key moments (discussed at length by Markusen) are his great hustling run-outs of weak infield grounders to pitchers in two different World Series, 1960 (Game 7) and 1971 (with the Pirates down 2-0 in the Series). Each led to a big inning and may have been the difference in the Series.

Markusen gives substantial focus to Clemente the outspoken man.Roberto could rub people the wrong way because of his blunt complaints about perceived wrongs in baseball, and this often involved discrimination against black and Latin players.Markusen also discusses Clemente's frequent injuries and the accusations of his being a malingerer.A teammate who knew Clemente's injuries were real pointed out that sometimes Clemente did not want to play when injuries might cause him to embarrass himself, his family, or the team. This was a cultural difference that showed Clemente's pride but could be taken the wrong way.In any event, Clemente still did his share of playing hurt. But controversy seemed to swirl around him.

Perhaps Clemente was too vain with respect to his playing abilities, but it is pointed out in this book that the Pirates right fielder wanted no attention when it came to his charitable and humanitarian efforts. The polar opposite became the case after he was killed in a DC-7 crash en route to Nicaragua to help earthquake victims.Teammate Willie Stargell observed:"Clemente's work with the relief effort was typical. He was always trying to help someone."

Clemente's heroism on and off the field at the end of career rid him of any controversial image. In the last four chapters (post-mortem) Markusen explores the appreciation of the man and the ballplayer, and how he achieved mythic status in Puerto Rico. One of Clemente's goals was to see built a sports city that would provide opportunity and training for Puerto Rican athletes, and this dream was realized after his death.Baseball Commissioner Bowie Kuhn observed that Clemente had "a touch of royalty" about him. That was shown in Clemente's skill as a ballplayer and his 1971 observation:"Any time you have the opportunity to accomplish something for somebody who comes behind you and you don't do it, you are wasting your time on this earth."

5-0 out of 5 stars Rave Review
I'm not sure where the previous reader is coming from. There is plenty about Clemente the man-- his sense of humor, his pride, his work ethic, his philanthropy. Yes, the emphasis is on baseball in this book, but thoughtson Clemente's personality and character are interspersed throughout. Greatdescriptions of Clemente in the World Series and in the '71 All-Star Game.I highly recommend this book.

3-0 out of 5 stars Interesting because of the subject
This biography of Roberto Clemente could have been so much better. It's easy enough to read, because Clemente himself is so interesting, but there are flaws with it. The book is not well-edited and tends to repeat itselftoo much; for instance, the subject of reporters quoting Clementephonetically is mentioned several times throughout the book, as if thewriter feels the need to reintroduce us to this fact over and over andover. Also, little sense of Clemente as a man emerges.

5-0 out of 5 stars An excellent read for fans of the GREAT CLEMENTE
The 1971 World Series was the first one that I remember vividly. I was nine years old at the time, and I remember rooting for the Pirates. I also vividly remember how Clemente took over the series. His talents were put onthe national spotlight for baseball fans in a big way.

This book in greatdetail displays not only Clemente's terrific skills as a baseball player, but also his wonderful work as a humanitarian and the numerous good deedshe did for men, women, and children.

The book also discusses the manystruggles thatClemente and other Latinos experienced during theircareers. Clemente was an extremely proud man, and was justified in hisanger when certain people tried to 'Americanize' him.

It is rare for anathlete to become more popular after his death, but I believe that Clementeis aprime example of this. He never really got the national exposure hedeserved until the 1971 World Series, and his death in 1972 cut short notonly a tremendous playing career, but more importantly deprived the worldof no doubt more humanitarian efforts to those in need.

This is thesecond book written by Bruce Markusen that I have had the pleasure ofreading. His talents as a baseball writer are evident, this is by far thebest baseball book that I have read. I look forward to the nextbook!!!!!

5-0 out of 5 stars Pride of Puerto Rico: The Life of Roberto Clemente
I really enjoyed reading about Roberto Clemente's life. The book was very inspiring and I learned a lot more about Roberto Clemente reading this book made me feel much more pride in being Hispanic. It goes to show that everyone and anyone can accomplish what they want in life if you are committed to it. I like many others really admire Clemente because he didn't let the racist comments get to him or his lack of speaking English get between what was his most important goal in his life . . .his baseball career. I think that he showed that he was very committed to his baseball because he will play while being hurt or not, he wouldn't give up baseball for anything. In my opinion he deserved all of his awards and trophies, the respect he receives from many people and all of the young kids who look at his accomplishments and wish to be like him. If you ask me he is truly the pride of Puerto Rico.

5-0 out of 5 stars Book of Pride
I enjoyed this book so much.Coincidently I finished it just before seeing a ceremony in honor of Roberto Clemente with his widow Vera present at the 2006 MLB All-Star game. From reading this book I understand why the word "Pride" is always used when discussing Roberto Clemente. This book carres the theme of Roberto's pride from beginning to end.Pride not only in himself but in his family and country. Many may say this is not a book about baseball, but those who know the magic of baseball understand that you can't seperate the game from the players. It is the great person in the player that makes the game of baseball so wonderful.Roberto was a great baseball player and an even greater man. Puerto Rico should feel honored in having him as one of their native sons.

4-0 out of 5 stars Pride of Puerto Rico
My 12-yr old son read this book for a report.
He didn't complain too much and finished pretty quickly so I guess he liked it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Very nice and easy to understand.
It was so good that when I received it, I could not put it down till the end. That night I went to bed at 4:33AM. Mr.Robert Walker, 2 thumbs up to a well documented piece of art. Again THANK YOU for this biography.

4-0 out of 5 stars A Baseball Hero
I think that this book really tells the reader about the life behind the greatest Latin American baseball player to ever live. The book also compares what Roberto did to what Jackie Robinson had done earlier in baseball history. The breaking of the color barrier was huge steps for players of a different race. Baseball had been segregated up until Jackie Robinson became the first African- American player to sign a contract with a professional team. This book also shows the reader great pictures of the life and childhood of Roberto Clemente. There are also great pictures of Roberto with some of the most skilled players to ever have played the game. It shows to us that he was accepted as a ball player and as a person. ... Read more

Product Description
When Roberto Clemente was growing up in Puerto Rico, his family had no money to buy him a baseball bat and balls. So he made his own. Sometimes he would wrap string around old golf balls, or crunch socks into the shape of a ball. Roberto's obsession with baseball irritated his mother, especially when he threw his homemade balls against the wall of his room to practice catching, or dirtied his best white clothes playing ball on Sundays.

Roberto encountered both fortune and pain on his road to becoming a professional baseball player. He endured racism as he struggled to be the first Hispanic player to be inducted into the Hall of Fame. But Clemente is remembered for much more than his exceptional baseball skills. He was a great humanitarian who helped in many charitable causes. In 1972, when an earthquake destroyed much of Managua, Nicaragua, Clemente volunteered to help in the relief effort. It cost him his life when his plane, bound for Nicaragua filled with food and clothing, developed engine trouble and crashed into the sea. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Roberto Clemente
I bought this to use in my 6th grade reading classroom. It is excellent to use to teach reading skills such as main idea, author's purpose, or summarizing. I put it in a center and students have 10 minutes to use the book for an assignment. Since it is at a lower reading level, students have success in building skills to use in higher level texts.

This book is a good addition to the grade 1-6 classroom library. ... Read more
