Product Description
Big names have always dominated baseball, and one of the biggest in recent history is Roger Clemens--the Rocket. As a baseball great, he has shown what it means to succeed, both on the field and off, in his near quarter century of major-league service.

The Rocket: Baseball Legend Roger Clemens journeys from Clemens's humble and sometimes difficult childhood through his illustrious career in Boston, Toronto, New York, and Houston. Clemens rose through the ranks, setting a new example of devoted work ethic and responsibility to team and fan alike. Through it all he remained a dedicated family man, not a trait usually associated with the free-for-all image of a major-league baseball player.

Joseph Janczak traces Clemens's career from his high school days; through his University of Texas collegiate baseball (where he was given the pre-Rocket nickname of "Goose"); and on to his minor-league and major-league career. Baseball's image when Clemens first started in the halcyon days of the mid-1980s quickly dissolved into that of a sport saddled with crises and scandals, such as gambling, steroids, strikes, and fan distrust. But Clemens rose above it all and has set an example for the fans, who he says are the reason for his hard work on the mound each game.

The Rocket includes thoughts from teammates, opponents, and Clemens himself on his legendary career. Janczak also discusses the ongoing steroid controversy and the Rocket's philanthropic endeavors to the community. Written for baseball fans of all ages and all levels of knowledge of the game, The Rocket shows why baseball is America's pastime and why some stars still deserve to be idolized. ... Read more

Product Description

A fearless, hard-nosed Texan with a 98-mph fastball and a propensity to throw at the heads of opposing hitters, Roger “the Rocket” Clemens won 354 games, an unprecedented seven Cy Young Awards, and two World Series trophies over the course of twenty-four seasons. But the statistics and hoopla obscured a far darker story—one of playoff chokes, womanizing (including a long-term affair with a teenage country singer), violent explosions, steroid and human growth hormone use...and an especially dark secret that Clemens spent a lifetime trying to hide: a family tragedy involving drugs and, ultimately, death.

In The Rocket That Fell to Earth, New York Times bestselling author Jeff Pearlman reconstructs the pitcher's life—from his Ohio childhood to the mounds of Fenway Park and Yankee Stadium—to reveal a flawed and troubled man whose rage for baseball immortality took him to superhuman heights before he crashed down to earth.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great read
Loved the book, bought it because my cousin was interviewed for it and I knew the book mentioned him catching for Roger Clemens while he was in Toronto.
Ended up not being able to put the book down.

5-0 out of 5 stars Terrifically entertaining telling of the Clemens story
Terrifically entertaining telling of the Clemens story by [...] contributor Jeff Pearlman. On the ESPN site, Pearlman is curiously drawn to the seedy and unflattering sides of many sports stories, and deals with them candidly, fairly, and with a very subtle dash of wry humor.

No doubt, the Clemens of *now* is an arrogant fool. Pearlman does a great job of showing us the Clemens of *then*, how the broken home and misguided direction from a troubled sibling shaped his personality.

Not just a hatchet job, the author makes his subject somewhat of a pitiable creature, insanely focused on athletics above all else, yet genuinely not posessing the social skills we all take for granted.

If you already hate Clemens, it's for sure this book will make you happy, as his clueless, arrogant behavior is laid bare again and again. But even his supporters would have to consider this a generally even-handed account of his life.

The book is an easy read -- I killed it in two days. Highly recommended to baseball fans and to followers of Pearlman from [...].

4-0 out of 5 stars ROGER OVER AND OUT OF THE HALL OF FAME
JEFF PERLMAN DOES A REAL NICE JOB WITH THIS BOOK. I DID NOT KNOW MUCH ABOUT CLEMENS PERSONALLY BEFORE I READ THIS. NOW I KNOW I WOULD NOT WANT TO KNOW HIM PERSONALLY. BEING AN INDIANS FAN FOR MY WHOLE LIFE, I HAVE SEEN HIM PITCH MANY TIMES AND DEFEATED THE TRIBE MOST TIMES. I NEVER DID LIKE HIS HEAD HUNTING TACTICS BUT I DID RESPECT HIS ENORMOUS TALENT. THE ROCKET WAS ONE OF THE BEST POWER PITCHERS OF THE 80'S AND 90'S. HE WAS AROGANT, SELF CENTERED AND FULL OF MANY THINGS MOSTLY HIMSELF. JEFF PERLMAN GIVES THE READER SOME OF THE BEHIND THE SCENES LOOK AT THE ROCKET BOTH ON AND OFF THE FIELD. CLEMENS HAD A GREAT WORK ETHIC BUT TOOK ON THE ARROGANT PERSONALITY HIS BIG AND TROUBLED BROTHER ADVISED HIM TO. CLEMENS STARTED TO SLIP TOWARDS THE LATE 90'S AND HIS SUPER SIZED EGO WHICH CRAVED ATTENTION WAS FED WITH STEROIDS AND GROWTH HORMONES. THIS REJUVENATED HIS CAREER TO THE POINT THAT IDIOTS LIKE STEINBRENNER PAID RIDICULOUS AMOUNTS OF MONEY FOR HIS SERVICES. AFTER READING THIS BOOK I WOULD THINK THAT MOST PEOPLE REALLY LOATHE CLEMENS. HE IS OUTRAGEIOUSLY GREEDY, A CHEATER IN SPORTS, A CHEATER ON HIS WIFE AND JUST A PLAIN FAT A__ LIAR. NOW HIS INSISTENCE THAT HE DIDN'T USE ROIDS HAS OPENED UP MANY DOORS IN HIS PAST LIFE AND THE TRUTH IS VERY UGLY. I HOPE HE IS FOUND GUILTY AND SERVES PRISON TIME. HE HAS BEEN SO PAMPERED AND RECEIVED SO MUCH ATTENTION THAT IT IS TIME FOR HIM TO GET HIS.

4-0 out of 5 stars Sad Character
I don't feel sympathy for Clemens in this book or life itself. He is portrayed as he is - an arrogant, driven person who did whatever it took to make his dream come true. The book is enlightening and for those who want to know more about Clemens or baseball in this time period, then it is a very good read.

5-0 out of 5 stars Admit it Rah-jah!You juiced!!!
Ok, I will admit that right off the cuff I love to read biography tabloid books. The title on this one and watching all of the steroid scandal and media coverage on Roger Clemens (as he perjured himself) has kept me glued to the topic.Regardless, the man lied and he should just be forthright and come clean.

The book really tells the true character of Roger Clemens -- his arrogance.I am not saying he was not a good person and did not go charitable giving ... but I think he did it for his own purposes. The fact that he cannot tell the truth about his steroid use just shows what kind of person you are dealing with. The book really brings about some of the color in his character.I have always been intrigued by the Clemens intimidation factor on the mound. His intimidation and precision on the mound was fueled by steroids.

The book goes into the story of a chubby boy born in Ohio to a broken home who remakes himself into a "Texan" with more stability. Most people think of Clemens as a Texan ... not so. Just another facade that "The Rocket" puts on.Roger dreamt of going to the majors and was able to fulfill that dream (that is admirable). However, at what cost? This book delves into the life of a baseball star "The Rocket" who indeed is very human.

How much more admirable would he be if he came forward and told the truth.I don't think he has the truth in him or believes the truth.Read the book, it's a fast read and entertaining.A great baseball tabloid book up there with Juiced: Wild Times, Rampant 'Roids, Smash Hits, and How Baseball Got Big.Incidentally, Conseco held Roger's hand through the beginning of the juicing process.

5 stars for entertainment value. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Not quite what I expected but still a good read
From reading the description, I expected this book to be focused heavily on insight from the hitters' perspectives regarding what it's like to step into the batter's box to face Roger Clemens. While there certainly was some of that, it seemed to focus much more on the opposing hitter and what sort of results he was able to achieve (or could not achieve) against Roger Clemens.Buy a cheaper used copy of this book and it will be worth your money.

4-0 out of 5 stars Baseball pitcher - Roger Clemens
Baseball just isn't the same without a
great book to read concerning baseball's
all-time greats. Roger Clemens is cetainly
one of baseball's greatest pitchers no
matter which baseball ERA you speak about.

5-0 out of 5 stars Mayo hits one out of the Park
Jonathan Mayo's analysis of Clemens would be a remarkable achievement in its own right, generously offering up honest analysis and insights into some the most intriguing personalities in Baseball. On its own right, Mayo's interviews reveal a side of these stars that most sports journalists either gloss over or miss altogether. All of this is true in its own right, but when you consider that Mayo wrote this book months before the whole story on Clemens broke out, then one can really see that this book is destined for history. Going forward, any other author will forever be tainted by the "scandal" side of Clemens and all the spurious conjecture and speculation. Lost forever is the opportunity to objectively view Clemens through the untainted lense that he will forever be viewed by history, whether he is proven innocent or not.

As such, baseball fans and in particular, Yankees fans, owe a debt of gratitude to Mayo for serving up what future baseball historians will no doubt recall as the last authoritative look at Roger Clemens the athlete, both for physical prowess, as much as if not more so for the terrific mental focus and awareness that he was able to bring to his game.

Mayo's intimate portrayal of Clemens is a masterful display of writing for his ability to draw us sympathetically towards the story without cheapening the experience by trying to convert that moment into sympathy for Clemens himself which has been so frequently done by lesser authors.

I would have liked to see some photos of Clemens particularly with his son as that story was the one that really stood out from the others. I can't recall another interview where Clemens revealed as much about this intimate side of his family.

Food for thought for the second printing... ... Read more

Excerpt: Alexander Emmanuel "Alex" Rodriguez (born July 27, 1975) is an American professional baseball player of Dominican parentage. Nicknamed "A-Rod", he currently plays third base for the New York Yankees of Major League Baseball. He previously played shortstop for the Seattle Mariners and the Texas Rangers. Rodriguez is considered one of the best all-around baseball players of all time. He is the youngest player ever to hit 500 home runs, breaking the record Jimmie Foxx set in 1939. In December 2007, Rodriguez and the Yankees agreed to a 10-year, $275 million contract. This contract was the richest contract in baseball history (breaking his previous record of $252 million). In February 2009, after previously denying use of performance-enhancing drugs, including during a 2007 interview with Katie Couric on 60 Minutes, Rodriguez admitted to using steroids, saying he used them from 2001 to 2003 due to what he called "an enormous amount of pressure" to perform. Rodriguez was born in the Washington Heights section of New York City to a Dominican family. When he was four, Rodriguez and his parents moved to the Dominican Republic, then to Miami, Florida.
