5-0 out of 5 stars Our Mickey: Cherished Book
I am a huge Yankee fan and I have read a lot of books about them including some about Mickey Mantle.Out of all the books about the Mick this is my favorite.

Bill Liederman and Maury Allen have created a different perspective about Mantle by not telling about his life and career but letting his freinds and other famous people who knew Mickey best, write a paragraph about experiences with him.It shows the real Mickey Mantle and some of the funny and great things he did.

The book is divided in four categories; Mickey as a Yankee and Teamate, Mickey as Legend, Mickey as Personality, and Mickey as a Ballplayer. The book has people such as Whitey Ford, Willie Mays, Billy Chrystal, Joe Torre, Donald Trump, Regis Philbin, and more.

I loved reading this book and I recommend it to not just a Yankee fan but any baseball fan or someone who lived during his career and remember him.

5-0 out of 5 stars A 4-bagger
First, I am not a Yankees fan, but they have had some great players over the years and Mantle is, arguably, one of the best, and I have always admired his considerable talent. Everyone knows his statistics and how he liked to party, but I was looking for some insights into the man, and this book delivered. The book is a series of reminiscences by teammates, opponents, writers, friends and people whose lives were touched in some way by Mantle. Some are funny, some are poignant, but all of them together give a picture of the man. If you enjoy reading about the person behind the legend, and how he was perceived by others who knew him, then you'll enjoy this book. It's a good read and I recommend it heartily.

5-0 out of 5 stars Congratulations
Well done!I remember when you two were kicking around the idea of a Mickey Mantle book.Congratulations on all your great ideas coming to fruition. You two make an excellent team.Good luck, I hope you sell them all!I look forward to your next collaboration.

5-0 out of 5 stars A fresh take on the legend of the Mick
There are lots of Mickey Mantle books out there, but I've never seen another like this. Anecdotes about Mickey from friends, teammates, and notable fans whose lives he touched. It's a fun, fast read as each story gives you a new perspective on one of the most colorful Yankees of all time. Unlike the standard-issue biographies out there, this book reads like a series of quick conversations and it is fascinating and entertaining to hear from such diverse names as Yogi Berra, David Halberstam, Regis Philbin, and Willie Mays. I learned a lot that I didn't know about Mickey, and I highly recommend this for you other Yankee fans out there. ... Read more

Product Description

Here is an intimate pictorial history featuring rare and many unpublished color photographs of the Yankees from the golden age of the celebrated baseball team. Yankee Colors tells the story of the legendary period from 1949 to 1964 when New York baseball was supreme and the New York Yankees were in the World Series almost every year. Now, this glorious period of Yankees history is captured through the intimate lens of famed sports photographer Marvin Newman. He was one of the only sports photographers of the time shooting in color and capturing the Yankee greats such as Mickey Mantle, Roger Maris, Casey Stengel, and Yogi Berra. Images of regular season games, pennant races, World Series competition, and Yankee Stadium are included.

This book is a must for every Yankee and baseball fan, with behind-the-scenes moments and photos of the greatest baseball icons of the time.

5-0 out of 5 stars Like Looking at a Stack of Old Baseball Cards--Return To Those Thrilling Days of Yesteryear...
All this book needs is Dizzy Dean saying, "The Yank-kees a-coming to bat..." as only he could say it.(Always wondered why a former Cardinal player was so enthralled with the Yankees as an announcer!!!)

This book is a treat to a child of the fifties and sixties, especially those of us who collected baseball cards and knew the value, even then, of a good, mint-condition Mickey Mantle.

This is a great book, a thrilling return to the days of yesteryear when heroes could be heroes, when we were young and unencumbered with the cares of the world.

This book is a trip back in time. And its a good, enjoyable andworthwhile trip, no matter if you are a Yankee fan or a Yankee hater. This was and is baseball at its best. This book is a treasure trove of memories, warm thoughts and wishes--wishes that the game could be once again as it was then.

If you are a child of the fifties and sixties, it is a chronicle of our lives, a more simpler, pure, clean time in our lives...before money and too much media destroyed it all.

Look back, remember, feel good and then, feel a little sadness that these days are gone and these players, who played for the love of the game are gone, the likes of which are never to return.

4-0 out of 5 stars Photographic Treasure of Yankee Greatness
Although some of the photos in this book aren't "colorful" (black & white) and the ommission of any World Series pictures during the early '50s ('51-'53) leaves a slight void in your viewing pleasure, what's left is indeed a photographic treasure of the great New York Yankee teams of the "Mickey Mantle era".And that's not so bad.

Personally, I don't care if classic pictures are in color or black & white.Quite often, the most memorable shots of baseball's glorious history are in black & white. What makes them memorable are the players and the moment that is frozen in time.Who could deny the black & white shot of a jubilant Yogi Berra jumping into the arms of a startled Don Larsen at the end of Larsen's perfect game in the '56 World Series is unforgetable?Or for that matter, the famous black & white snap shot of Larsen's last pitch of that game with an alert Billy Martin ready for action in the background; which also shows the memorable situation---one more pitch to go for baseball history?

Of course, the photographs taken by Marvin Newman are predominantly originals (& in full, living color) to the vast majority of the reading audience; and that's where the big treat comes from.I got goose bumps just looking at the cover photo, with Mantle taking his classic, power cut at a pitch.Awesome.

Yankee fans will certainly treasure this wonderful collection, along with die-hard fans of the game itself. It's worth the price of admission.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good, but could have been better.
Although born in 1963 and too young to have recollections of the early 1950s through 1964 time span covered by this book, I recommend Yankee Colors: The Glory Years of the Mantle Era. There are many other baseball books that account for the same period, but few offers color pictures.

The book does have some flaws:

1. Misleading title; not every photograph is in color: those of spring training and the 1955 and 1956 World Series are completely in black and white.

2. Lack of coverage, in pictures or text, of the 1951, 1952 and 1953 World Series, all of which Mantle played in.

3. Errors in content. For example, the 1963 World Series section has a picture of Jim Bouton warming up at Yankee Stadium, with the caption claiming this was game three (game three was played at Dodger Stadium).

For these shortcomings, I rated it four stars instead of five. Nevertheless, Yankee Colors is a worthy purchase; seeing the photographs of the stars of yesteryear, such as Yogi Berra, Roger Maris, Tony Kubek, Whitey Ford, and of course, Mickey Mantle, plus other great players including Sandy Koufax, Willie Mays and Bill Mazeroski, etc., in flannel uniforms, as well as that of long gone ball parks like Crosley Field, Forbes Field, and the pre-mid 1970s rennovation Yankee Stadium lets one travel back in time to a simpler era, when baseball was still more of a game, before it was taken over by free agency, battles between millionaire players and billionaire owners, greed, and steroids.

5-0 out of 5 stars Yankees come alive in COLORS
Mantle, Maris,Howard, and Stengle live again in the book YANKEE COLORS.
The photos, most rarely seen,Jump off of page after page of breataking color photography. These images make you pine for these long gone Gods of Baseball. The book is also well written, making it a joy to read and gawk at. The black and white photos are not bad either.
A must for yankee fans of all ages, and Baseball fans in general.

5-0 out of 5 stars Beautiful pictures of the best years to be a Yankee fan
I received this book as a birthday present.I grew up in Bergen County, New Jersey in the 1960s and was a die hard Yankee fan.Looking at the beautiful pictures of Yankee stadium and the greats from that era brought back the memories of the best years (in my opinion) to be a Yankee fan.I especially liked the sections regarding the World Series with the Dodgers (1955-56, and 1963), the Braves (1957-58), the Pirates (1960), the Reds (1961), the Giants (1962) and the Cardinals (1964).In providing these stories and the supporting pictures, the book is surprisingly not biased towards the Yankees. It gives a good balanced showing of what happened. So, it is even a good book for a baseball fan of that era.For that reason, I highly recommend it especially for Yankee fans but also for all baseball fans of the late 1950s and early 1960s. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Linking Baseball's Best
As we share Shiner's nostalgia, we rediscover Aaron, Mays, McCovey, Mantle, and Gibson, old heros, old memories. Baseballs Greatest Players, The Saga Continues is more than a Who's Who of baseball, it's a way of life, a catalog of events, a collection of memories. As Shiner reveals the greatest players, we, who are old enough to remember, bask in their glory and relive our own unachieved ambitions.

But Shiner does more than take us back, he bundles the past with the present and into the future, tyingthe memories together forever in our minds. McGuire's record-setting season rekindles other home run hitters: Roger Maris, Reggie Jackson, Mickey Mantle, even Babe Ruth. We connect to the present, even anticipate the future. McGuire's 70 home run season triggers a vision of people diving into San Francisco Bay to retrieve the balls Barry Bonds his in 2001, the year he surpassed McGuire's record.

Baseball fans will love this book, others will like it. It's clearly, simply, and accurately presented and guaranteed to stir a memory or two.

4-0 out of 5 stars One For The Books
With the writing of Baseball's Greatest Players, author David Shiner takes a serious risk. The only thing a sports fan loves more than making a "greatest list" is arguing voluably about why the other guy's list is WRONG!One read of this book will shut down most any other greatest list's chances, and it does so with style, wit, and a healthy dose of readable fact.

In its text, Shiner's book fulfils both the needs of casual fan's interest and the SABR-members desire for solid, quantifiable statistical evidence. But it goes beyond just fact and storytelling to get to the intangibles that separate the players truly great between the white lines from those whose personality and dedication supported not just their teams, but the game itself.

Baseball, more than any other sport (though Canadian hockey fans will rightly take exception to this) carries its past with it.This continuity, this love of the game that both transcends and unites generations is served well by Shiner's writing.Buy Baseball's Greatest Players, and take it to a sports bar near you.You won't go wrong.

5-0 out of 5 stars 50 Years of Baseball's Best Players--Fun and Interesting!
It's hard not to enjoy this well written, easily readable book on baseball's best players of the past 50 years.Lively anecdotes plus comprehensive (but not boring) analysis shows exactly why these are the best players of the game.I got a kick out of remembering a lot of things I had almost forgotten, like just how good Bob Gibson was. Some of the facts are amazing, like that in the last two years Sandy Koufax pitched, there were 8 games where the Dodgers only scored one run for him--but he won 4 of them. This book also avoids wallowing in sex and drug garbage. It's a baseball book, not National Enquirer.Balanced, interesting, a really solid piece of work.

5-0 out of 5 stars Fun & Interesting Book on Baseball
Brief synopses of baseball's best players during the past 50 years.Fun and informative.Enjoyed reading this, think others would also.

5-0 out of 5 stars GREAT BOOK ON BASEBALL'S GREAT PLAYERS!

4-0 out of 5 stars Joe Knows Baseball & We Know Joe
Joe Garagiola is a funny guy with more firsthand experience in the game of baseball than practically anyone who's ever lived. It's no surprise that he was able to put together this nice book which might also be called, "The Baseball World According to Joe".Joe's certainly got the gift of gab & is quick with a little bit of homespun humor to match any possible situation.

Of course, if you've watched baseball as much as I have, you've already heard most of this stuff during his long stints of color commentary for all those thousands of ball games over the decades. As a result, I did more skimming than the average reader, since I've heard these stories quite a bit; however, the stories are great.

I particularly enjoyed his perspective on some of the players, past and present; especially when mentioning the vast spectrum of colorful slang they've adopted (Dennis Eckersley had some classic quips). His observation that the game should be kept in its simplest terms to really enjoy is wonderful."Just play ball" is a great philosophy.Let's quit worrying about ridiculous stats that are completely useless; it just clogs up the brain with too much information.

As Joe's lifelong buddy Yogi Berra once said, "Ninety percent of baseball is half mental."Makes perfect sense to me; and after reading this book, you'll agree.

4-0 out of 5 stars JOE!
I have saved this book to read just before the start of the new baseball season, not that I need to get fired up!Especially fun read as I live in Phoenix and root for the D-Backs and Mr. G!

5-0 out of 5 stars Good Reading
My husband and I are a big fan of this man who has done a lot for the Arizona Diamondbacks, our favorite team.He is a gem to us and look forward to hearing him commentate more games this year.

2-0 out of 5 stars Not what I expected
Joe G. is a great storyteller, except in this book. I was very dissappointed in the fact it was like reading a "How to Play Baseball" for a 12 yr old. The stories were one liners and wrapped around the history of shinguards or who and how they make bats. Only finished 80% of book and will go bnack at later time.
