He liked the idea of returning to New York, where he had played in 2000 and 2001 with the Mets, and had always wanted to play for the Yankees. But he looked at their roster, saw his pal Robin Ventura at third and superstar Jason Giambi at first and was confused. Ron Coomer, the backup corner infielder last year, got only 148 at-bats and Zeile is unwilling to be a full-time bench player. His hesitancy changed when GM Brian Cashman asked Joe Torre to call. Torre, who managed Zeile for six seasons in the 1990s, outlined a role that, when combined with the Yankees' annual opportunity to win, delighted Zeile and he agreed to a one-year contract worth $1.5million on Friday. "I knew he was the guy who wanted to get me over there," Zeile said yesterday from his home in Santa Barbara, Calif. "That made it easier. He said he's been pushing for me behind the scenes. "He knows I like playing in the big arena and I've been better in tighter situations. I like the whole atmosphere in New York, the intensity and challenge. Joe was assuring me I'd be a big part of it. I told him I don't want to relegate myself, at this point in my career, to 125 or 175 at-bats in a season. He assured me that wasn't the case. Performance will tell, of course. It'll depend on how I perform."

So, I look out onto the field and see that they've set up a nice little table with two Golden-Plated baseball gloves (Gold Glove Awards ::wink::) and I learned that Robin Ventura and Rey Ordonez were to be receiving them. So before long, all these press people gather around and Robin and Rey come out of the dugout. So, I'm sitting about seven feet away from all of this and they hand Robin and Rey their awards and my mother and I were screaming "Robin's the best!" (heh) at the top of our lungs. My mother attempted to get a picture, but there was so many journalists there that the picture didn't come out. I remember being there for this picture on your site I was right there, and by the direction of Robin's eyes in the photo, he could be looking at my mother and me. Anyway, the game was a loss for the Mets, but Robin DID hit a one-run homer (and when the little apple came out of the hat and lit up and Robin crossed the plate, it was exciting).

It was my first site update since late February. I can guarantee the next one will not take three months. Things changed. Player stints with multiple teams in a single season are now in proper order. Todd Zeile's appearances are now in order and I have also grey'ed the seasons that do not represent season totals for easier scanning. Other than that there were some interface issues that I've changed and some corrected data and values. I've also added Power/Speed Ratio, Sac Hits, Times on Base, HBP and Games started to the leaderboards, for more leaderboard pleasure. These should be dramatically expanded over the summer. I'm hoping for a two-week development cycle this summer, with a nice new feature every two weeks. We'll see.
