Nevertheless, there are some interesting stories. Perhaps the biggest is the warning against signing proven veteran free agent starters. The worst three starting pitchers in the league so far are all "proven veterans", but all they're really proving is that they've lost it. Two of them, Mark Clark and Tim Belcher, were relatively high-priced signings certainly higher than most clubs wanted to pay. The third is free agent-to-be Jeff Fassero, allegedly Seattle's number one starter, but, to steal a line from Austin Powers , he's pitching more like number two. But more of that later (Seattle pitching, not bad

Wright, a 21-year-old right-hander who started the season in Class AA ball, will be charged with keeping the Indians from being pushed to the brink of postseason elimination when he faces New York in the intimidating atmosphere of Yankee Stadium. The Indians, already reeling from blowing a five-run lead in an 8-6 loss in Game 1 of the American League divisional series, must win to avoid going home down, 2-0, in the best-of-five series. Is this really a situation in which you want to place a rookie? "I would be (concerned) if the rookie wasn't Jaret Wright," Cleveland manager Mike Hargrove said. "We have found this year that he has not been intimidated by the circumstances he finds himself in. "Certainly, Yankee Stadium with the fans and the playoffs is a special, unique circumstance, but I fully expect Jaret to go out and be calm, cool and collected and throw the ball the way he has all year for us."

Then, with one pitch in the seventh to Bobby Bonilla, everything changed for the rookie and the Cleveland Indians. Wright put Cleveland in position to win the Series, leaving with a 2-1 lead in the seventh inning. But the Marlins rallied to tie the game in the ninth inning and won it 3-2 in the 11th. "Nobody on this team likes to lose," Wright said in a somber Cleveland clubhouse. "It just didn't work out today." Wright, only the seventh rookie pitcher to start a Game 7, dominated the Marlins for the first six innings with his 95 mph fastball and a wicked slider that locked up several Florida hitters. Entering the seventh, the 21-year-old had a 2-0 lead and was in line to become the first rookie to win a Game 7 since Babe Adams of Pittsburgh in 1909. But the Indians' babe grooved his first pitch to Bonilla, who ripped it over the wall in right, renewing the Marlins' hopes and recharging their fans. After striking out Charles Johnson, Wright issued his fifth walk, this one to Craig Counsell, and Cleveland manager Mike Hargrove made the slow walk to the mound to replace his young star who received a hero's welcome in the Indians' dugout.
