Sept. 24, 2002 Four former University of North Carolina baseball players were named to the Atlantic Coast Conference's 50th anniversary team, which was announced today by ACC commissioner John Swofford. The 52-member team was voted on by the nine league institutions as decided by the league's 50th Anniversary Committee. Scott Bankhead, Scott Bradley, B.J. Surhoff and Walt Weiss were Carolina's honorees on the team. "These four players certainly distinguished themselves with outstanding careers here at Carolina," said UNC head coach Mike Fox . "They have each made a tremendous contribution to Carolina baseball and to the game of baseball in general and I couldn't be happier for them. Their success, not only here in college but in Major League Baseball, speaks to their character, work ethic and commitment to the game." Bankhead played for five teams over 10 seasons in MLB and is now the owner and director of the North Carolina Baseball Academy in Greensboro. Bradley, who was in the big-leagues from 1984-92 is now the head coach at Princeton, Weiss moved into an administrative position with the Colorado Rockies after a 14-year professional career and Surhoff is in his 16th season in Major League Baseball. Currently on the injured list of the Atlanta Braves, Surhoff is a .281 career hitter in the majors.

Extractions: 03/08/99- Updated 08:01 AM ET Weiss and son share starry night DENVER - Walt Weiss got two hits in the All-Star game, which was nice. That his son was there to cheer made it special. Walt Weiss' wife Terri and son Brody enjoy the All-Star Game (AP). Two weeks ago, as 3-year-old Brody lay near death in a hospital, his presence at Coors Field would have been unthinkable. Yet there he was Tuesday night, sitting in the stands on the lap of his mother, Terri, watching his father play in the All-Star game for the first time in an 11-year major-league career. ''With everything that has happened in the last few weeks, I just took the approach that anything I did in the game would be a bonus,'' Weiss said. ''This was more than I could ever have hoped for. ''It's been crazy. It seems like we went straight from the hospital to the All-Star game.'' After the AL's 13-8 victory, Weiss struggled to put his feelings into words. ''It was special having him here watching the game,'' he said. ''It was beyond our expectations. We didn't think he'd be able to get here.

Extractions: Former Tar Heel shortstop's defensive play keys Braves' 5-3 win. Oct. 9, 1999 Houston Former Tar Heel shortstop Walt Weiss may have saved the Atlanta Brave's season Friday afternoon at Houston as the Braves took a 5-3, 12-inning victory over the Astros to grab a 2-1 lead in their NL divisional series. With the score tied at 3-3, the Astros loaded the bases in the bottom of the 10th inning. A force play at the plate got the first out, then Tony Eusebio ripped a shot up the middle. Weiss dove to his left to knock the ball down, spun around and fired an off-balance throw to catcher Eddie Perez for the force out. Perez kept the tip of his toe on the plate as he stretched for the throw. Closer John Rocker then struck out Ricky Gutierrez to end the inning. "That was as good a play as I've ever seen," said Brave's starter Tom Glavine. "That's what the postseason is all about. That's what it takes to win games like this."

Extractions: Denver Understandably, the starting left side of the National League infield seemed distracted on Monday, seemed less than fully engaged in festivities on the eve of the All-Star Game. Walt Weiss, the shortstop, had a dazed look on his face. Chipper Jones, the third baseman, had a weary tone in his voice. Oh, the Braves teammates are thankful to be here Weiss as an All-Star for the first time in an 11-year career ("I had given up on ever making it") and Jones as a starter for the first time in three All-Star appearances. But they're spent, emotionally, mentally, from the recent traumas in their families' lives. Before coming to Coors Field Monday afternoon, Weiss a former Colorado Rockie had taken his 3-year-old son to the family's Denver pediatrician. "Brody's petrified of doctors right now, afraid he'll get poked again," Weiss said. "So the doctor said, `He's looking fine. Let's wait until later in the week for more blood work.' " The kid has won the battle against E. coli, but he remains weak and will be checked twice a week for several months. "He's a reminder every day now of what's important," said Weiss, occupying his old locker in the clubhouse. "What he's been through . . . trivializes the game." And then the consummate professional ballplayer sought, unnecessarily, to clarify: "Not to say the game is trivial. It is not trivial. It's important to me, being my first All-Star Game and, who knows, maybe my last. When I'm on the field, my obligation is to my team. But when you've dealt with life and death, it gives the game a new spin."
