Extractions: Unless you were a relative, a friend, a die-hard fan or some savvy autograph hound, you easily could have missed the star inductee of Sunday night's 12th Salem-Roanoke Valley Baseball Hall of Fame ceremony. That's how well Billy Wagner blends into a crowd, especially one of good, ol' Southwest Virginia people, the folks the Houston Astros' star relief pitcher grew up around and still loves to hang around. "Nobody recognizes me as being a ballplayer because I've got this big stature," said Wagner, poking fun at his 5-foot-11, 195-pound frame. "So it's pretty easy for me to be low key. It doesn't matter for me, I'd rather wear boots and blue jeans than wear a nice suit." That said, Wagner didn't mind having to spiff up a little in joining former major-leaguer Leo Burke, former Roanoke Red Sox and Salem Pirates general manager Morris Cregger, former Salem Pirate Doug Nelson, and former Glenvar High School baseball coach Larry Wood as the hall's newest members.

Extractions: Houston Astros reliever Billy Wagner and former Glenvar head coach Larry Wood headline the 2003 class of the Salem-Roanoke Baseball Hall of Fame. Wagner earned Division III All-America honors at Ferrum. Wood won 187 games in 17 years as Glenvar's head coach, steering the Highlanders to the 1994 Group AA title. Wood was severely burned in a fire at his home in July. The other new members are former major leaguer Leo Burke, who led Virginia Tech to the NCAA tournament in 1954; former Salem Pirates general manager Morris Cregger; and Doug Nelson, who was 13-4 for the Salem Pirates' 1974 Carolina League championship team. The new class will be inducted in February.

Extractions: BASEBALL FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE April 7, 2001 MONMOUTH SWEEPS WAGNER IN DOUBLE HEADER West Long Branch, N.J. The Monmouth Hawks took solid pitching outings from Mike Benfield and Glen Keeton, as well as powerful relief from Brian Gismonde, en route to a double header sweep of Wagner College, 4-3 and 4-3. The victories put Monmouths record at 6-1 in the conference and 10-16 overall. Benfield got the nod in game one, pitching six innings, allowing three runs on seven hits. Benfield struck out three batters in the win, his third of the season. The Hawks scored two runs in the first inning, including Greg Landis (2-3) single, and two stolen bases to lead off the inning. Jeff Toth (2-3, 3 RBI) singled in Lance Koenig (1-2) for the other Monmouth run. Benfield did not allow a run until the fourth as Wagner manufactured a run. Paul Kurella started the inning with a single and advanced to third on Joe LaRoccas double. Jamie Scholz was hit by a pitch to load the bases and Wagners run scored as Billy Biel was hit as well. Wagner tied the game in the fifth on a Mike Cerminaro home run to left field. Monmouth got two runs back in the bottom of the fifth to regain the lead at 4-2. Landis singled and stole second (another one of four stolen bases in the game for Landis). Toth singled after Koenig singled, driving in the two runs.

Combing his hair or steering the wheel of his car was anything but routine. David J. Phillip, AP Billy Wagner's 422 strikeouts in 280 2/3 innings is the best ratio in baseball history. Obviously, a few months into the 2000 season, something was wrong inside Wagner's left arm, the same limb that lifted him to the upper echelon of baseball's best relief pitchers. Once the ball reached the plate, the results weren't much better, either. Billy the Kid, the baby-faced assassin who stands 5-9 on his best day but brings heat like Goose Gossage or Nolan Ryan, was getting torched. A year after he was named the National League's reliever of the year with 39 saves in 42 opportunities and a 1.47 ERA, Wagner blew nine of 15 save chances and had an ERA of 6.18. "You can preach about velocity and movement all day long, but my location just wasn't there," Wagner said of the first 2
