The previous spring, the Cowboys had produced one of the greatest seasons in the history of college baseball, when outfielder Pete Incaviglia hit .464-48-143, setting single-season records for home runs and RBIs that still stand. Robin Ventura was part of a touted recruiting class expected to replace Inky. drives to the warning track. "Ventura looked like a guy who learned the game through osmosis," Ward said in 1994. "From that moment of the Triple-A game on, I realized he didnt need me. It was like being a tennis coach for Martina Navratilova."

Extractions: DAILY NEWS SPORTS WRITER Robin Ventura The Yankees have just started getting their winter plan together, so they may not have begun talking about whether they want Robin Ventura back to play third base next year. But Ventura's agent, John Boggs, made it clear yesterday that Ventura would love to be in pinstripes next season. And, Boggs said, there's nothing to the speculation that Ventura might be planning on retiring. "He couldn't have had a better time there," Boggs said. "He loved playing for Joe (Torre) and the organization. 'Cash' (GM Brian Cashman) knows he really enjoyed his stay. You just wait to see if they feel the same way and want him back. You just hope it works out. "He wants to play," Boggs added. "He proved some things to some people this year. He felt good all season. He put up some numbers and he's ready to come back and do it again." Boggs said the Yankees haven't called to tell him if they are interested in keeping Ventura. The Yankees hold exclusive negotiating rights with Ventura until 15 days after the World Series ends, when Ventura can declare free agency.

Extractions: DAILY NEWS SPORTS WRITER here could be a Robin Redux in the Bronx this season after all. The Yankees have been mostly mum on their plans for their own free agents, a list of players that includes Roger Clemens Mike Stanton and Ramiro Mendoza . But according to the agent of another free-agent third baseman, the Yankees are making Robin Ventura their priority at their open corner infield spot. The Yankees have contacted the agents for David Bell and Edgardo Alfonzo to express interest in both players, but Adam Katz , Bell's agent, said he believes the Yanks' interest in his client is "just conditional at this point. "They have a player they're going to go after first," Katz said yesterday. "It's my understanding they're going to make a run at Robin. We understand that, he's a terrific guy and player." Ventura, 35, had a marvelous first half for the Yankees last season, with 19 homers, 62 RBI and a .263 average before the All-Star break. He finished with 27 homers, 93 RBI and a .247 average, his power numbers exceeding most of the expectations of team executives. Then he batted .286 and led the Yankees with four RBI in the four-game loss to the Angels in the division series.

Extractions: The Gold Glove Award, which began in 1957, is given annually to the best defensive player at each position in both of the pro leagues. The honor was initiated by the Rawlings Sporting Goods Co., and a panel of sportswriters made the first year's selection. However, in 1958 the players themselves voted for the recipients of this prestigious award. In 1965, the responsibility for choosing the winners went to the managers and coaches, with the provision that they cannot vote for players within their respective organizations. The winner of the award receives a glove, custom made with gold-finished leather, mounted on a hardwood stand. Below is a complete list of Gold Glove Award winners since 1990: American League
