A Valiant Return From John Valentin john valentin, his career in jeopardy less than a year ago, had returned. It waspretty outstanding, he said. It's nice to be back playing baseball again. http://www.eagletribune.com/news/stories/20010511/SP_001.htm
Extractions: Eagle-Tribune Writer BOSTON The ovation lasted exactly one full minute, a swell of applause that intensified until the subject waved his hand in a gesture of acknowledgement and silence. It had been almost one full year since John Valentin stepped into a major league batter's box, and the 31,428 on hand at Fenway Park wanted to let him know how much they appreciated the work he put into his comeback. Valentin, of course, had no choice but to give them something in return. He launched the first pitch he saw a John Halama fastball into the sky in left field. It sought the net above the Green Monster. Valentin chugged hard around first as the ball descended. He's a baseball player, and even after almost a year away, he knows what it feels like to not quite get all of a pitch. The ball scraped the Wall above leaping Mariners left fielder Al Martin. After a wide turn, Valentin stood triumphantly on second with a double. The fans rewarded him with his second, but not last, ovation of the night. John Valentin, his career in jeopardy less than a year ago, had returned.

May 1996 Boston Baseball: Red Sox Salaries The 1992 Sox were among baseball's biggest disappointments, paying $42 million insalaries while finishing last in the AL East john valentin, $109,000, $2,672,500. http://roadsidephotos.com/baseball/bb96-2.htm
Extractions: Despite the 1994-95 labor dispute, total player salaries have remained constant since 1994. But the distribution of these salaries has changed: the squeeze on baseball's "middle class" has reduced the median salary by over $100,000. While the Vaughns and Valentins can earn more than ever, experienced middle relievers and fourth outfielders no longer command million-dollar salaries, and smart teams no longer sign fading veterans to top-dollar contracts. Frank Viola: $4,733,333 Tom Gordon: $2,900,000 Danny Darwin: $3,250,000 Mike Stanton: $1,750,000 Jeff Reardon: $2,633,334 Heathcliff Slocumb: $1,400,000 Matt Young: $2,266,667 Stan Belinda: $1,275,000 Joe Hesketh: $1,775,000 Mike Maddux: $600,000 Greg Harris: $1,400,000 Jamie Moyer: $600,000 Tom Bolton: $470,000 Tim Wakefield: $450,000 Tony Fossas: $350,000 Butch Henry: $400,000 John Dopson: $265,000 John Doherty: $400,000

The players are ranked by position, so first basemen are not compared to second basemen, etc. The players are then broken down into Type A, Type B and Type C (and the rest). When a team loses a free agent who is ranked in one of the three categories, they receive compensation as follows (if and only if they offered that player arbitration before he signed with his new team): If a team doesn't offer arbitration to their free agent, they get nothing when he signs with another team. This brings up the next question of why don't the teams always offer arbitration? The answer is, they might simply be afraid he'll accept it. It's a gamble some teams aren't willing to take, even if it seems likely the player is heading out of town. Teams must offer arbitration by Dec. 7.
