Actually, he paraphrased the line. "Tom Hanks said there's no crying in baseball," Espy said. "With Bubba, I tell him there's no grunting in baseball." Trammell is a hard-nosed player. And he likes to swing just as hard. When he showed up in spring training, the outfielder was swinging with so much force he sounded like Monica Seles. Problem is, the harder Trammell swings, the tighter he swings and the longer he swings. He loses the quickness and fluidity that allows the ball to jump off his bat. "Spring training, he was awful," said Padres hitting guru Tony Gwynn. "He was grunting every swing. Duane pulled him aside and said, 'Hey, we've got to shorten it up.' From the time he started working on keeping it short, he's been pretty good."

Links Padres Spring Training Few Questions, Muted Optimism as Padres Head for Peoria With the Padres organization maturing following the post-World Series of 1998 shakeup, there are few questions to be answered as spring training gets underway five seasons later but, too, there's not nearly as much optimism as there was last year. That's because the drive by GM Kevin Towers and manager Bruce Bochy to be competitive in the National League West was derailed by last year's sorry performance. There was all kinds of optimism at this time last year, believe it. Team officials felt they were ready to make a move. But injuries and a lack of quality play from some players derailed the process. Towers recalled last year's mood and high expectations, but said the death of OF Mike Darr in a traffic accident right before the opening of camp truly hurt.
