The Tigers won the American League East division by a single game on the last day of the season, yet despite his Herculean efforts, Trammell finished second to Toronto's George Bell in league Most Valuable Player voting. It was one of the worst decisions in award voting history. Trammell was the starting shortstop in Motown from 1978 through 1993. He teamed with Lou Whitaker until 1995, and the pair played a record number of games together. In 1984 he won the World Series MVP award when he batted .450 with two homers in the Tigers five-game victory.

Extractions: Print Article LAKELAND, Fla. When he left Detroit after the 1995 season, Sparky Anderson figured he'd never wear a Tigers uniform again. Kirk Gibson thought otherwise. Anderson, who won World Series championships with both the Cincinnati Reds and the Tigers, was an unhappy man after his 17 years in Detroit. He was at odds with owner Mike Ilitch and didn't like the direction the organization was heading. So it was no surprise that he was inducted in the Baseball Hall of Fame five years later wearing a Reds cap, not the Old English "D" of the Tigers. But there he was Friday night, wearing his old Detroit uniform again, watching the Tigers drop an exhibition game to the Montreal Expos. What changed? The 69-year-old Anderson got a phone call. Alan Trammell, Sparky's old shortstop and the team's new manager, needed help. That was all it took for Anderson to forget about the past and get on an airplane. "I'm asking him to critique me and the whole organization," Trammell said Saturday before a game against the Atlanta Braves. "I just love to sit and talk baseball with him."
