Women's Volleyball February 5, 2003 STORRS, CONN. - University of Connecticut head football coach Randy Edsall announced on Wednesday that the Huskies have signed 20 student-athletes to a National Letter of Intent to join the UConn program. "Im extremely happy," Edsall said. "We filled our needs. When you look at our board and our overall depth, you could see what we needed to do and I think we accomplished all of those goals. Our coaching staff did a great job and our players did a great job hosting these young men. Our professors and administrators that were involved with this did a great job too." UConn posted a 6-6 mark in a highly-successful 2002 campaign, highlighted by a 38-0 shutout win at Navy and a convincing 37-20 victory on the road against Iowa State on Nov. 23 in the season finale. The Huskies, who last year ranked fifth in the nation in passing defense and 19th in total defense, joined Division I-A for the 2000 season and will begin play in the BIG EAST Conference in 2005. Extractions: Texas Football Roundup April 9, 2002 Here is the latest Texas high school, college and NFL news (even women's professional football), as well as recruiting tidbits and the latest on Casey Printers: One of the state's top prospects in 2003, Baytown Lee quarterback Drew Tate isn't exactly sitting idle this spring waiting for his senior football season. Tate plays catcher on the Ganders' baseball squad. Tate played left field as a junior but moved behind the plate following the graduation of Josh Ford, who now plays for Baylor. We keep thinking the Baytown Lee-San Antonio Roosevelt season-opener in our Texas Football Classic on August 31 is going to be an over-under of 80 points. Tate and Roosevelt RB Reggie Carson may combine for 600-plus yards of total offense. For more on Tate, please see http://www.texasfootball.com/02blue_0221.html Randy Rodgers, who authors the 'Blue Chips Section' of Dave Campbell's Texas Football magazine, has finalized the site and date for his 2002 Lone Star Kicking Challenge. Mark your calendar for Baylor University's Floyd Casey Stadium complex at 9 AM on July 12. Rodgers worked out 69 kickers at the 2001 Lone Star Kicking Challenge. Entry fee is $20 and includes a t-shirt and awards. The three competitions at the Lone Star Kicking Challenge are field goals, kickoffs and punting.
