Selig wouldn't put a timetable on a decision about Rose and didn't hint which way he was leaning, but his remarks at the World Congress of Sports were his most detailed public statements on Rose since he met with the career hits leader on Nov. 25. Rose agreed to a lifetime ban from baseball in August 1989 after an investigation of his gambling and applied for reinstatement in September 1997. Until last fall, Selig repeatedly said he saw no reason to alter the punishment that Rose accepted from Commissioner A. Bartlett Giamatti. "Bart gave Pete the right to apply for reinstatement," Selig said yesterday. "I kept it on my desk for 5-1/2 years. I think it was time to at least consider that." Selig called the Olympics issue "quite difficult."

Extractions: Updated Stats story No. 11 Florida Rallies to Defeat Vanderbilt 13-7 in Series Opener Gainesville, Fla. - The 11th-ranked Florida Gators rallied from a five-run deficit to defeat Vanderbilt 13-7 Friday, April 19, at McKethan Stadium. The win moved the Gators within a half game of South Carolina and the Southeastern Conference Eastern Division lead at 28-12 overall, 9-7 in the league. The Commodores lost their seventh consecutive conference game to slip to 17-16 overall and 3-11 in the SEC. Vanderbilt built a 5-0 lead through the first three and a half innings but the Gators roughed up Commodore starter Jeremy Sowers (3-5) for 10 hits and six earned runs. The freshman tied his season high in walks and struck out two in his shortest collegiate outing of five innings. Florida reliever David Bartelt (4-1) halted Vanderbilt's scoring until the late innings while registering the win. He pitched 4.1 innings and allowed five hits, two earned runs, no walks and a strikeout. Five different Gators recorded two RBI apiece, including right fielder Aaron Davidson, first baseman Aaron Shealy, center fielder Jake Riordan, catcher Brian Rose and second baseman Jonathan Tucker. UF shortstop Mark Kiger went 3-for-3 with three runs scored.

Extractions: October 29, 1997 To help you begin thinking about the upcoming rookie drafts in your Diamond Mind leagues (or other fantasy leagues, for that matter), here is a list of all players who made their major-league debut in 1997. Because many leagues do not allow you to draft a player before he appears in the major leagues, chances are these players will be available in your league's draft. Some of these guys will help you right away, while others are highly-touted comers who were called up in September for the first time. Last year, I scooped up Nomar Garciaparra with my first draft pick (even though he didn't play much in 1996), and this year's list contains several players who are expected to do the same next year. This is a great place to find the guys who can begin to turn your team around or who can help sustain that dynasty that you've put together. Diamond Mind, Inc.
